Q.
The player has decided to play off the path. What other options did they have?
.
.
.
A.
The player could have taken free relief from the immovable obstruction (road), however, their nearest point of relief would have been on the left-hand side as we are looking at it. This option would have likely made for a more difficult shot, due to interference with the nearby trees/plants.
Rule 16.1
The player also had the option of taking an unplayable for a one stroke penalty (Rule 19), or playing the ball as it was lying on the path.
The player ended up playing as it was lying, and made a brilliant recovery stroke.
