Golf’s governing bodies have proposed a new local rule to give tournament organisers the option to require the use of a distance-reducing ball.

Advances in fitness and golf equipment technology have seen players hit the ball further and further in recent years, leading to golf courses being lengthened in an effort to continue to test the world’s best.

The R&A and USGA said in February 2020 that they intended to “break the ever-increasing cycle of hitting distance” but admitted it could take years before solutions were found.

  1. ffs, just make them use the same ball, could of been done years ago instead of making the courses longer

  2. long courses make the game longer and tiring maybe change the clubs mechanics

  3. Rory didn't make the cut, so JV Ware needs to explain how is it not sustainable to drive the ball that far.

  4. That's unfair for the players that play more than others considering they've put more effort and training so why shouldn't they be able to hit the ball to their longest distance they physically can

  5. by handicapping balls all you will see if this comes to fruition is instead of advertisements for the longest hitting ball it will be the most forgiving ball. So by reducing the capabilities of the distance of the ball, the potential of the ball can be manipulated instead into a more forgiving, easier to hit ball which in turn just makes the game easier. Just seems like a lose lose.

  6. Hang on a minute, let's get this straight(sorry!). The authorities want to reduce the ball distance by FIFTEEN yards! A totally pointless exercise! We need at least a 50-60yd reduction in driving distance to protect the future of the professional game.
