These are driver distances for me 😂
The title is correct. I hit my 5i just as far as my 4h but much more accurate. I plan to add a 4i next year
The issue for these clubs are do they fill a gap in your yardages.
My longest iron is a 5i which goes 175 yards, sometimes 180 yards if I strike it really well. I also carry a 5w which goes 205-210 yards so effectively I have roughly 30 yards of gap to cover and 2 spare slots in my bag. I could fill that gap with a single club going 190-195 yards and maybe stick a chipper in the bag or I could fill the gap with 2 clubs, 1 going just under 190 yards and the other carrying 200 yards.
I have tested both a 9w and a 5h in the past. The 9w carries 192 yards on average and the 5h 180 yards. So, in theory I could fill the gap with just the 9w, but my problem with a 9w is that it is in my hands a very one dimensional club – it flies high and that is all it can do. The 5h is just a little short in carry for me, or at least the one I tried was. In the end I filled the gap with a 7w and a 4h which I weakened by 1 degree of loft. 7w flies 198-200 yards consistently and I can flight the ball a bit better than the 9w, 4h is a consistent 185 yard club, I can push it another 5 yards if really needed. Would be interesting to try the Stealth 5h as I suspect it would fly as long as my current 4h but with 2 degrees more loft
I've just gotten back into the sport and am re-evaluating the clubs I used years ago (and still have). I now have swapped out my 3 and 4 iron for a Callaway Apex Utility wood 21* loft and it works well for me. I also am now trying a 16.5* Callaway 3 wood in place of a 5 wood and added a Taylor Made 13.5* 300 Mini to augment my Callaway Rogue LS driver that is lofted at 10.5*. So my gapping is 10.5, 13.5, 16.5 and 21* through woods. I recently added some ping i230s and am looking forward to trying them out. Now I just need more practice and maybe a game or two during these winter months to qualify for the Average Golfer club 🙂
My clubhead speed has dropped due to my age. It is great to have the club manufacturer realize the place in the market these clubs have. Great content Andy👍
Great video AG. I have the Callaway 3.4.5. hybrids and a Callaway 7 and 9 wd. Since I've changed
my swing to the Shoulder to Shoulder swing I have to go to Stiff shafts or buy new clubs. What ever
works for the player is what to use. I live in a very windy area so I hit a low ball on purpose but the hb's and
the 7 and 9 are easier to hit. At 75 I was expecting to go to senior shafts at some point but the new swing
and new ball and technologize clubs Langer maybe playing until he's in his 90's.
From 2023, you can carry 18 clubs so why not have both 😉
Why people keep struggling with mid and long irons befuddles me I will be 73 in June and have a club make up of driver 250 4 wood 220 then I custom shafted a 19 22 25 28 31 degree sim 2 heads 31 is 38 inch 28 is 38.75 25 is 39.50 22 40.25 19 is 41 42.5 TSR 4 wood 42.5 inch 16.5 loft. 8 9 PW GW SW LW putter Custom Xcaliber iron rapid taper iron shafts put in irons and hybrids .I dare say I out play most of the guys even 20 years younger .There all scratching there heads One word EGOS .Mind you I have ability to do my own work. 🤷🏼♂️👨🏻🦳⛳️🏌🏼♂️
As a matter of fact my salesman at my favorite golf store got me to use a 5 hybrid and 3 hybrid, a 5 fairway food , plus a driver. I finally ended up switching my 5 fairway wood for a 4 because it was as easy to hit as a 5 but carried more distance. I am 66 yrs old, rather a slow speed swing and I think we nailed it pretty good. Light shafts have increased my distance and accuracy.
Fairway woods for me, I just don't feel confident with the look of a hybrid. I have a 3 and 7 fairway, looking for a 5 to stuff in between. This covers anything over a six iron.
I got stealth hybrid 4 & 5. So easy to hit, sooooo easy that I got my first hole in one this fall. I’ve been playing since 2020. So I love these clubs
I've took out my 4 iron and replaced with a 4 hybrid. Also left out my 2 iron for the winter replaced with a 5 wood (this is likely to remain in spring too).
Andy, When you are as poor/inconsistent at golf as I am you don't get embarrassed by what clubs you carry in the bag, you are embarrassed by your poor/inconsistent swing. I do not struggle to launch a long iron/fairway wood/hybrid I can comfortably get any of them in the air, where I struggle is dispersion and consistency of strike. I can comfortably hit any club 40 yards off line
Andy, Maybe someone who hits their 4 iron 200 yards, the 9 wood might be a replacement. As for us OAP's..lol. I have a 3-5-7 wood in my bag. Longest iron is a 6 iron, which I hit 160 yards in the summer, 150 in the winter. So, if I were to switch to a 9 wood or hybrid it would be to replace a 6 iron. I always have a bit of a laugh when reviewers talk about 7 and 9 woods replacing "long irons". For some of us it would be mid-irons. Fwiw, i'm the same age as King Kenny. You'll get there some day. 😜
For me it depends on where I’m hitting from – tee box, fairway, or rough. Before I go any further I’m not a high swing speed player; driver is 225-240, 7 iron is 150-160. So if I’m hitting off the tee box or fairway I prefer to hit a utility iron(Srixon ZU85 2 and 4). Out of the rough I prefer either a hybrid or a high lofted FW; for whatever reason I have less confidence with the hybrids and FW out of the short stuff. And I can’t explain with my slower swing speed why I hit the Utility Irons as long and we’ll as I do. Andy by the way I do have the Stealth DHY on my list to try on the course thanks to your great content.
I have woods, hybrids and hybrid irons in my bag. My only "normal" clubs are my wedges and putter. I find them much easier to hit than traditional irons
The TaylorMade fairways and hybrids are terrific and look great. I've got 5, 4, 3 hybrids and 5 wood.
Driver, high loft 3 wood (16.5), 3 hybrid and 5 hybrid at the top of my bag.
Just bought a Wilson launchpad 5 hybrid. Phenomenal club. Gone from dreading a 160m approach to actively looking forward to hitting one. The draw bias built in really dials down my natural fade, this club launches so high and generates good spin. I love it especially for those long par 3s. 4 iron has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the cupboard under the stairs!
I was hitting a 7 wood 25 years ago before it was popular, my golfing buddies thought it was weak, but I always managed to hit the 190 to 200 yard shot high and soft. I loved that club, and I'll be getting another this year.
Question : What is the brand of glove you're wearing? I found a leather (type)/material combo glove and like it. With just the leather glove my hand was sweating and making a mess of the glove so I bought a wet weather glove to counter that. The combo I found I really like and it has an extra piece on the right palm for end of club shaft wear. (left hand glove)
I use a 22° 4h and a 25° 5h (Mizuno) and it has helped my game tremendously
When I was in my late 20’s and early 30’s the 4 iron was my favourite iron. Today it is my Mizuno JPX-921 Hot Metal 6 iron and I’m 59. I like the confidence behind a 3 and 5 wood, and I do have a 4 iron that I held back that I hit great and it’s a Taylormade MCGB 4 iron, which I replace my Mizuno 4 iron with at times. But I stepped outside the box in 2022 and started using Callaway Eouc SuperHybrid 4 and 5 on the bag and pulled the 4 iron out. I find them exceptional just out of the semi rough just off fairway where a fairway wood fails. Distance is superb and after watching TXG Golf review them I had to give them a try. It worked! I alternate according to course I’m playing as to which clubs go in the bag. It’s been fun!
I love my Stealth 5 and 6 hybrids, which replace the 4 and 5 iron, respectively. I still keep my P790 6 iron in the bag. I also have the Rogue ST 3 HL (4 wood) and 7 woods.
I use a 7 and 9 wood, I switch out hybrids depending on wind conditions and the course I am playing. My first iron in the bag is a 6. I am 64 and play to a 9 handicap.
Hi Andy, my bag now goes driver, 5 wood, 7 wood, 4 hybrid, 5 hybrid. I now need to go into the Pro’s testing set up to check I haven’t got too many clubs at that end of the bag. Personally, I prefer a smaller head.
Just can’t get on with hybrids, so currently have Driver, 3 Wood, 7 Wood, SIM 3 DHY, SIM 4 DHY & SIM 5 DHY at top end of my bag … Then into Stealth Irons 7 to SW … Still trying this set up out but it was fantastic during my last round.
I agree with all of this. I discovered a while back that I did better on short holes hitting a half shot with a five wood. I then purchased a Wilson Staff D9 seven wood, an excellent and reasonably priced club, which has worked very well for me. This club has replaced my three hybrid. Is it all in the mind? Perhaps but it works so who cares!
I carry a Callaway heaven wood, 9 wood and sometimes a eleven wood. I have tried hybrids and I don’t hit them as well as the woods
How's lou
I use my 3 wood mainly on fairway as a senior golfer and ping 5 wood and Taylor made rescue think I use this clubs the most on fairways
Replaced my 5 iron with a 7 wood. Much better results. I find it works out of the rough as well as anything else
