Vintage and classic golf clubs are often found with very old grips, if these can be saved then great but if you intend to play the clubs and the grips are very hard with little grip then they should probably be replaced.
Finding authentic period grips is almost impossible so the best alternative is to use plain, single colour grips that look at least vaguely old!
This video goes through the process of removing old rubber grips and replacing with new ones.

Great vid I re gripped my ping eye black dot last year the grips that were in bad condition took an age to take off I cut them down so the 3/4/5/6 are all now one length then 8/8/9/pw/sw original length as I’m short bit seem to do the job for me .
Nick, nice how-to. I've regripped many clubs over the years however I've never done really old petrified grips before. Although I've recently acquired a set of 1954 Spalding Synchro-Dyned irons 2-9 iron with what looks like original petrified rubber grips, not leather wraps which were also available that year. I will eventually get around to regripping and your method of using hook utility blade and making multiple cuts seems to be the ticket, thanks Nick for your expertise.
I am new to your channel and enjoying it very much. I appreciate the effort it takes to produce these works. I am catching up on the past videos. Thank You!
Unfortunately the older grips gave the clubs a time period classic look, especially the first grip you removed. Had Classic cords by Golf Pride when they were still available, really really rough grips too, ha! The new grips these days are great and all but I miss the Golf Pride Victory.
I regret my o we n clubs as well, and those 50 year old victory(pro) grips are some of the worst. I just take my time peeling them, then a heat gun and some rubbing alcohol takes the old tape right off. If anymore is needed after that then rubbing alcohol and steel wool. Always works like a charm for me.
I prefer, and tend to stick to, wrap style grips. They look good on vintage clubs, and I like the grip they give. It just feels right in the hand.
