A Golf Coach JC How To Guide…. How to perform the Peter Cowen Wide Stance Drill.
This drill together with my previous video, feet together drill have to be the two easiest but biggest bang for buck drills to providing the opportunity to the feelings we are aiming to achieve.
You might have listened to many coaches talking about dropping the left knee down and straightening the right knee, for a right handed golfer. Or moving the weight to load the trail leg.
Lets have a think about how much you might straighten to some another person, can you actually straighten, where will that move the pressure in your feet, how much should i move to load? Unfortunately these are in the pile of extremely difficult motions that will have you heading back to the drawing board until the cows come home.
Have you noticed how golfers go off the boil? its due to loosing their sequencing, timing or hand eye co-ordination feel that was correcting the other errors leading to that point.
Finding the answer in the dirt ball bashing just is not the answer unfortunately. However if you are like me and do enjoy crunching a few eggs, then that is absolutely fantastic if you are armed with the correct information.
Understanding simple foot mechanics and the linkage to the knee is important. However to keep it simple to efficiently create the correct backswing for your body you need to create the most neutral posture for your body. Tilting your hip girdle giving your arms the opportunity to hang from your shoulders is number one. From here feeling the feet interact with the ground allowing the big toe, little toe and the heal form a tripod and the weight in an athletic position. If you maintain the stability in the right foot keeping the knee over the inner side of the right shoe for a right handed golfer, this will enable the muscles to spiral up the leg. You will reach a point where you feel you are stretched, THIS IS IT, now its time to move on up into the thighs, hips, abs, trunk, shoulders, arms and hands. Note when the right ride is spiraling up the left side will naturally support as the pelvis is connected, the knee will move down and toward the right side slightly. That said the weight should remain relatively constant, no feeling of weight shift to the right leg. You might feel a pressure shift if performed at speed due to the club and your arms spiraling up to the right, which is completely normal.
I will support this with more content as foot pressure, engaging the correct muscles and COM is the key to starting the spiral correctly.
I have a quote I made probably a decade ago when i was playing a little more than coaching and came across 3D mechanics. Basically a golfer who moves outside of their feet relies heavily on their hand and eye co-ordination and timing to ensure they strike the ball. A golfer who effortlessly maintains their Center Of Mass (COM) and knows how to use their Center Of Pressure (COP) to create leverage will no doubt have more success with less effort. With the below quote in mind a golfer who has this knowledge is dangerous because they will take the money more often than not and that is why.
