I have been really struggling with my irons recently, hitting lots of heels/shanks and fat shots due to dragging my hands through the hitting zone and pushing my arms out at the ball with the club lagging too far below the plane. I was getting zero compression and any decent strike felt like an accident rather than actually being a good swing. I came across Mike Malaska on YouTube and his “Malaska Move” which is primarily a feel meant for players who get too under the plane and are guilty of “handle dragging” through the impact zone. It essentially is the feeling of tipping the clubhead towards the ball in the downswing to get the shaft more vertical and the hands closer to the body. Out of desperation I went to the range with only that swing thought and hit some of the most crisp iron shots I’ve felt in months, mostly dead center out of the clubface. I know this theory has been criticized by other instructors so I’m curious to see if anyone else here is a disciple because I might be a convert now after seeing the results. Video for reference:
