You wouldn’t think a lot of snowboarders are bringing their sticks with them from mountain to mountain. But Alex Deibold would tell you otherwise. The U.S. Olympic snowboarder is an avid golfer and proof that the game is played by more than just your grandparents. That’s why Alex caught Erik Anders Lang’s eye in the first place. Like most things, however, there’s more than meets the eye.
On a beautiful day at Glenwild in Utah, Erik and Alex talk about everything from heliskiing to mindfulness to the inclusive future of golf. Even though he’s an extreme athlete, Alex’s knees still buckle over an 8-foot putt for eagle, birdie, or to save par. What sets him apart is the mentality he’s honed over his years in snowboarding, and how to apply it to a different sport and a different challenge. It all comes down to gratitude—something that might help us sink a few more putts if we all had a little more of it.
