HUNTSVILLE – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women’s golf team heads to Huntsville to tee it up at the Harold Funston Invitational, hosted by Sam Houston State, on Monday and Tuesday at Raven Nest Golf Club.
The tournament begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Monday, as 36 holes will be played on the first day. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday.
The course is a par 71 and is 6,067 yards long.
The Competition
Along with the Broncs and the Bearkats, other schools competing are: Houston Baptist, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Tyler Junior College, Western Texas, St. Thomas, and Texas Southern.
Last Time Out
Senior Melissa Bernal posted an eighth place finish to lead the Broncs at the Fred Marx Invitational at Bayou DeSiard Country Club.
Bernal posted a final round three-over par 75 as she finished with a three-round score of 228 (75,78,75). Senior Marisa Canales posted her third straight 84 as she finished in a tie for 58th with a three-round score of 252 (84,84,84).
Senior Blake Peterson shot a final round 83 to finish in 62nd with a three-round score of 253 (87,84,84). Sophomore Kelsey Canales finished in a tie for 63rd after shooting a final round 81 as she finished with a three-round score of 254 (88,85,81) and senior Ashley Garcia finished in 65th after shooting a final round 83 for a three-round score of 257 (86,88,83).
Sam Houston State’s Paige Nelson took home the individual title after shooting a three-round score of 217 (74,70,73).
As a team, the Broncs posted a final round 322 to finish with a three-round score of 984 (332,330,322) as they finished in 12th place. Tournament host Louisiana Monroe took the team title after finishing with a three-round score of 908.
Last Time at Harold Funston Invitational
Melissa Bernal shot a final round 78 to finish in a tie for 23rd to lead the Broncs at the Harold Funston Invitational at Raven Nest Golf Course.
Bernal finished with a three-round score of 229 (77,74,78) to finish tied with Oral Roberts’ Paty Torres and Stephen F. Austin’s Aliece Anderson.
Senior Elena Arroyo (80,79,82) and junior Alexandria Martinez (79,80,82) finished in a tie for 38th with a three-round score of 241.
Senior Samantha Parrao closed out the tournament with a final round 81 to finish in a tie for 42nd with a three-round score of 245 (84,80,81). Ashley Garcia finished in 48th place with a three-round score of 250 (86,83,81).
Lamar’s Wenny Chang took the top individual spot after shooting a final round 73 to finish with a three-round score of 215.
As a team, the Broncs finished in ninth place after a final round 322 with a three-round score of 955 (320,313,322). Tournament host, Sam Houston State, won the team championship with a three-round score of 874.
