We have created a golf tips approach shot series to help you hit more greens now. If you have ever wondered how to hit better approach shots, in this video we discuss everything you need to think about during your golf pre shot routines. If you want to hit it closer, it starts with a great pre shot routine.
So often my golfers shoot the yardage and reach for their golf club. Shooting the yardage is a great first step and it isn’t even close to what you need to if you want to hit great approach shots. This golf lesson pre shot routine will help you determine all the yardages you need to know. If you want to hit better approach shots you need to know the distance to the front edge, the carry over the bunker of bulk head, the back edge if possible, and then I will usually shoot the trees behind the green too, as to confirm I didn’t hit them by accident with my rangefinder. This pre shot routine basics that we cover in this video goes for any full swing or wedge shots. You don’t need a separate wedges pre shot routine, this will work for your wedges.
Has your pre shot routine not been consistent? Are you ready for to learn new pre shot routine? If so, you are in the right place. Our golf pre shot routine is one used by many great golfers.
Next I will look at the green with my rangefinder for slopes. The slopes can knock your ball farther away from the flag to help you have more kick ins. Or if you have a yardage book look at the yardage book to determine how slopes on the green affect golf shots. The slopes will affect shots differently depending on the firmness. Green firmness is usually consistent from one green to the next but higher up, or pushed up greens may be even more firm. Just because a green has lots of contour does not mean it is hard. Learn how to use the green contour to your advantage, so you can learn how to hit approach shots that roll towards the cup. Always be aware of the pin position on the green. Use the slopes to your advantage and have more kick ins. Everyone has different golf pre shot routines, but this method works for me and it can work for you.
Next to hit better approach shots we must look at the elevation change between the ball and the green. Uphill shots will come up short and downhill golf shots often will go over the back. Taking more or less club to adjust for the elevation change is essential to hit more greens. The approach shot pre shot routine must always be the same.
Next up to hit it closer is the wind. The wind can help or it can hurt your golf shots. How does the wind affect my golf ball? It can add or remove spin which leads to more shape, more or less carry distance and change what the ball does when it lands. A small breeze won’t affect a shot more than five yards but a strong wind will affect your approach shots. This golf pre shot routine will always have you throwing up some grass to test the wind direction and strength. So this and you will hit more greens now.
After we review everything in front of us, it is time to look down to the ball at our feet. Is it a good lie or bad lie, as both will instantly give us options for our approach shot. Will we be standing on a slope? Uphill slope, downhill slope, sidehill slope, all three will create different starting line, shot shape and shot height. Next we will look at grass length. The longer the grass the less spin the ball will have, while if the ball is sitting up on the long grass we might hit the ball higher on the club face. A tight lie may lead to lower impact on the club face but we should get maximum spin as a result. If you want to improve approach shots, you have to improve your plan not just the swing. Every episode of golf tips approach shots will help your golf game. In this first episode ‘golf pre shot routines” we know we can help your golf game instantly.
New golfers that are curious what to do before they hit the ball don’t need to search any more. Use these golf tips approach shot keys and you will instantly have golf pre shot routines that rivals a tenured player.
We have not processed a lot of data regarding our approach shot, but we still need to execute a good approach shot. Based on all your data, create a goal for your shot. Once you have a goal, determine the best shot shape, and club selection to accomplish your goal. If after further review your goal appears to be challenging, adjust it down to a goal you accomplish, and more specifically a target that you think you can aggressively attack. You can improve pre shot routine in your next round. Write down our checklist and use it next time you play golf.
