Struggles for Irish trio at Champions Tour’s SAS Championship

Pádraig Harrington, Chris Devlin and Darren Clarke all had rounds to forget on day two of the PGA Tour Champions’ SAS Championship at Prestonwood Country Club in North Carolina.

Harrington and Devlin each started the day at one-under-par after matching 71s on Friday, and they ended it alongside one another again after both shooting three-over 75s.

Harrington never really got going, carding three bogeys on the front and then another on 10 before back-to-back birdies on 11 and 12. Another pair of bogeys on 14 and 15 followed, but he managed to claim one back on the par-5 17th and, tied for 37th, his return to PGA Tour Champions action after a two-and-a-half month absence looks like it’ll be one to forget.

Devlin, playing on a sponsor’s invitation and making his seventh start of the season which makes him eligible to be ranked on the Schwab Cup, didn’t make a birdie until the 17th and that was to get him back to +3 after four bogeys in his first 16.

Clarke, who began the day one behind his fellow countrymen, took one stroke more and sits tied for 49th.

The trio of Tim O’Neal, Vijay Singh and Freddie Jacobsen hold the lead at six-under-par. O’Neal’s four-under 68 was the lowest round from the three, with Singh shooting 69 and Jacobsen shooting 70.

O’Neal, with Irishman Lorcan Morris on the bag, is looking for his second win on the senior circuit having won the 2024 Dominion Energy Classic, while Hall of Famer Singh is a six-time winner on tour and 52-year-old Jacobsen is seeking his maiden victory.

In close pursuit of the trio are Chad Campbell and Soren Kjeldsen a stroke behind, while Ernie Els is among the six player tied for sixth one shot further adrift.
