Is this the smartest player’s distance iron PING has ever made? In this video, I’m reviewing the brand new Ping i540 irons to see if they live up to the hype.

These clubs look like a slender, beautiful blade at address, but the numbers are absolutely shocking. Packed with “In-Ar Air” technology and a new Mirage Steel face, these are designed for the golfer who wants elite aesthetics with game-improvement forgiveness and distance.

What you’ll learn in this review:

How the “Internal Airbag” changes the sound and feel.

Full testing and data (Distance, Launch, and Descent Angle).

Why the descent angle is more important than spin for these irons.

Real-world on-course playability.

  1. Good review. Clubs look awesome. Game G430’s now 6I-50 degree. May have to go to my local ping fitter and try them out. Been a Ping guy for sometime.

  2. Long distance but is that a plus or a loss? Loft gap of 5 degrees then will you have a issue the bottom end of your bag? 42 PW and 47 UW same as G440 so you will need another couple of wedges or even 3 if you carry a LW. 5 wedge set up that's over 1/3 of your bag. Becoming the norm now LOL.

  3. Tommy Armour Vaults, I need to get a fitting. Started playing 3yrs ago and im ready for an upgrade.
Those clubs look great but not sure my game is ready for them at 16 HC

  4. Thanks for the review Mark – you had me at someone that doesn't bring all the speed but still wants to compete. Afraid to say I may need to start saving. Current irons, Titleist 716 AP2 (#old). One point to raise would be shaft configuration with these – lower speed players, but looking to take advantage of some extra yards… I've always gone for a lighter shaft – maybe not so much with these if you want to maintain accuracy too?

  5. I have played i530 since launch, amazing clubs just wish they had softer feel/sound and were more workable. The i540 reviews make me believe these are more of the same, maybe just even more distance 🙂 I retro spec mine to reduce distance which worked well and I was hoping they would have less grooves but like I said just like the i530 they probably need all those grooves for spin / consistency. Doesn’t look like it’s worth the upgrade ver to i530 tbh. Thanks…great review 👍

  6. The i540s seem to be a downgrade in the appearance department for me. The i530s look near perfect for me.

  7. I'm a big fan of Ping drivers, never played the irons though – and if I did I would need more help than i540's offer. Completed a Mizuno iron fitting a few weeks ago, and just waiting for a set of JPX 925 HL to come in – hoping they help me hold a few more greens with the descent angle they should provide…

  8. Could never play an iron with a chunk missing out of it,looks like someone’s took an angle grinder to it

  9. I still prefer the i240s. I really want those in retro lofts. I think the i530 is better looking than these.

  10. I've recently purchased to a set of Cleveland 588 CB irons (you reviewed these many years ago) as I wanted less offset but these i540s might be an even better solution because the Ping offset virtually matches the Cleveland (if you don't get hung up on the number and simply match the lofts). Definitely going to try the Ping i540 7 iron against the Cleveland 588 CB 6 iron and compare?
