Golf is a booming business in Ohio
Stats show 48.1 million Americans played golf in 2025, including traditional courses, driving ranges, indoor simulators, or entertainment venues.
Ohio has a new No. 1 public golf course.
GolfPass has released its list of the 25 best public golf courses in the state, with Chippewa Golf Club in Doylestown taking the top spot this year.
“We try and do our best here and put our best foot forward and give our customers what they expect,” owner Brad Stewart said about the recognition. “We appreciate it every time we are ranked like that. It shows we have good employees trying to do their best.”
Chippewa also had been ranked as the No. 28 best public course in the U.S.
The 18-hole course, designed by James Harrison and Ferdinand “Fred” Garbin in 1962, sits along state Route 21 in rural Wayne County between Akron and Massillon. It’s known for a tough three-hole stretch called the “Bermuda Triangle.”
Earlier this year, Chippewa announced plans to open overnight lodging called the Barndominium.
Ashland Golf Club in Ashland was ranked by GolfPass as the top public course in Ohio last year. It didn’t make the top 25 this year.
GolfPass based the rankings on nearly 4,400 reviews of Ohio golf courses last year, with courses needing at least two reviews to qualify. It said 189 courses were reviewed.
“The elite private clubs around Columbus are the epicenter of Ohio golf, but there are plenty of really strong public golf courses spread throughout the state,” GolfPass writers Jason Scott Deegan and Drake Dunaway wrote in the report.
