Ryan Fox speaks after Round 1 of the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club, where he opened with 4-under par (-4) and six birdies in cold, windy conditions.

Fox explains how the temperature dropped quickly and how several holes into the wind on the back nine were “pretty brutal,” but he was pleased with how he hung in and controlled his ball. He also notes Riviera is usually “firm and fast,” yet after heavy rain early in the week it played much softer — still a demanding test that rewards shot control.

His standout birdie came on No. 2: after the horn delay, he returned and hit a 6-iron into the wind to about 15 feet and converted — a momentum boost that helped set the tone for the rest of the day. Fox also shares how Riviera’s kikuyu and eucalyptus give him a bit of New Zealand/Australia “feels of home,” and how he passed time during the nearly two-hour delay.
