Martin County home to oldest and most golf courses on Treasure Coast

One of the oldest golf courses on the Treasure Coast is owned by Martin County. Sailfish Sands, previously known as Martin County Golf Club.

The PGA Tour has been playing in the San Diego area since 1952 and at the Torrey Pines Golf Club in nearby La Jolla since 1968.

This week’s Farmers Insurance Open stamps out another chapter in a 73-year history. The tournament has been won by the biggest names in golf since the 1950s, starting with Arnold Palmer and continuing to Jack Nicklaus, Billy Casper, Tom Watson and Gary Player.

Tiger Woods won the tournament a record seven times and Phil Mickelson three times. Davis Love III, Jon Rahm, John Daly and Jason Day also have victories at the seaside course, perched atop cliffs with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.

Torrey Pines has also hosted two U.S. Opens, won by Woods in 2008 and Rahm in 2021, and pinch-hit for the Riviera Country Club for last year’s Genesis Invitational when the wildfires forced the move.

This week marks the return of Brooks Koepka to a non-major PGA Tour event. Koepka did not renew his contract with LIV Golf and he was able to come back to the Tour under several financial stipulations, such as forgoing eligibility for FedEx Cup bonus money and making a $5 million contribution to charity.

Torrey Pines wasn’t Koepka’s cup of tea. He missed the cut three times in four starts (2017, 2021 and 2022) and tied for 41st in 2015. But it’s a start for the nine-time Tour winner and five-time major champion.

Farmers Insurance odds

Xander Schauffele makes his 2026 debut on the PGA Tour and is listed by BetMGM as the Farmers favorite at +1400. Schauffele tied for ninth in the tournament last year.

Ludvig Åberg, who won the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines last year, is the next favorite at +1800, followed by Patrick Cantlay (+2000) and Cameron Young (+2200).

Ludvig Åberg: His victory at the Genesis Invitational last year at Torrey was no fluke. He also tied for ninth in 2024 in his first start at the golf course. He shot 67-68 in the first two rounds of the American Express before withdrawing due to an illness but he should be hydrated and ready to go this week.

Si Woo Kim: He’s come out of the gate this season with a tie for 11th in the Sony Open and a tie for sixth last week. Kim has made six of eight cuts at Torrey Pines.

Hideki Matsuyama: He won the Hero World Challenge in December and tied for sixth in the Sony Open, so the big guy from Japan is on a bit of a roll. He’s had mixed success at Torrey Pines, making 10 of 12 cuts, but producing only two top-10 finishes on the weekend. Matsuyama also tied for 13th at Torrey in the 2025 Genesis Invitational.
