Ball positioning might seem arbitrary but it is a very important part of hitting the ball well.

If the ball is too far back in your stance the ball will fly low and become susceptible to a slice or hook ball flight

Too far forward will open you up to topping your golf shot with weak contact

A general position for your irons is slightly in front/ahead of your zipper area

Each club in your bag will have a different ball position. This might seem confusing and overwhelming but we will teach you a a simple way to remember the rules.

In regards to irons, lets start with the ball in the middle of your stance. Just like its the middle of your stance, this position is usually the perfect spot for the middle club. So what club would that be? For most it is the 5 iron. So that club will start in the middle. From there, the higher the number the more forward the ball will be positioned. So a 4 iron will slightly in front of the zipper area. And the woods will be even more forward until you get to the driver which is just off the heel of the front foot.

So let’s try to understand why the ball is placed in different locations for different clubs. To get the height and property impact with the wedge and lower number clubs you want to hit down on the ball so they will be positions closer to the start of your back swing. They are also shorter shafts so they have the space to move through your swing .

The higher irons are longer

The lower the club the farther back the ball in your stance. So a six iron ball placement will be slightly behind your sipper area. The ball placement of the wedges will be played slightly in front of your back foot for full swings.

Usually the longer the club / higher the number the farther forward it will be in your stance. The higher number clubs have

The diver and woods will be positioned in the front of your stance. During the driver swing, the ball is recommended to be just off the heel of your front foot to encourage hitting the ball on the upswing. This adds height and ultimately distance to your driver shots

The club bottoms out in the middle of your stance as it continues to move through the swing, your club will start coming up off the ground. When the ball is too far forward you subject yourself to hitting the ball with the bottom of your club, missing it completely or causing you to swing left and the ball going left. (this is caused by having to twist your circle to get the low point at the front ball position)

Further back, can cause a loop in the down swing because trying to move low point further back when trying to hit the ball further back

As the ball moves forward in our stance we tend to swing more over the top and more left to swing more left to make contact. Hit down or slices on drivers because unconscious reaction of where the ball position is located.

Draw: further back in my stance
Fade: more forward in your stance

back in the stance club path more to the right. started right and curved to the left

front – ball goes left, club path traveling very left , club traveling down into the ground.
