In this video, I break down my full review of the Callaway Chrome Tour X golf ball, which unexpectedly earned a Top 5 spot out of the 100 golf balls I tested this year from an average swing speed golfer’s perspective.

Traditionally, firmer, tour-style golf balls like the Chrome Tour X aren’t a great fit for most average or mid-handicap golfers. Lower swing speeds usually struggle with compression, launch, and feel — but this year was different. The Chrome Tour X delivered consistent performance, impressive greenside control, and surprisingly playable feel, making it stand out against balls that should have beaten it on paper.

In this review, I cover:

Driver distance and launch
Accuracy and dispersion off the tee
Iron performance and consistency
Wedge spin and greenside control
Putter feel and sound
How it compares to other tour balls and “X” models

If you’re an average golfer, mid-handicapper, or someone who normally avoids firm golf balls, this might be one you need to reconsider. This test proves that golf ball fitting matters at every skill level, and you might be leaving performance on the table without even realizing it.

  1. I've played 9 & 9 (twice) with Chrome Soft and the Tour with the Tour winning out. I'm a middle of the road swinger and was very please with the Tour, now you've got me itching to try the X 🤣

  2. Good stuff I think I'm going to try out a few of the Callaway soon. I am swinging faster now so I am starting to see the benefits of the premium…I tried out the TP5 and noticed it with even the 7 Iron, but I agree some of the prices are crazy, but I will keep trying to find the sweet spot with performance and price.

  3. this is great the two balls i used last year was yellow PXG Extreme Tour and the Yellow Callaway Chome soft True Track love them both only buy them with discounts or sales get the first responders discount on both for cool weather I like the Yellow Callaway supersoft great video now you have me wanting to try this ball out the Chrome Tour X will pick up a sleeve or a dozen I am 60 years old and a 8 handi cap swing speed of 90-94 mph with driver usually love a soft feeling ball cheers all

  4. Love this. I think when the Chrome Tour versions originally came out, the Chrome Tour was supposed to be more like my fav the Chrome Soft X LS, and I prefer a firm ball for putting and playing. I finally played the Chrome Tour X and it felt more like my fav Chrome Soft X LS. Like you, I think $55 is too much so I prefer the Maxfli Tour X in yellow. I have played the Chrome Tour X when I got it on discount from Golf Galaxy for say $10 off. Knowing I can get the Maxfli Tour X at a better price all the time makes it my gamer most of the time.

  5. Yah, guess I missed your reasoning for going from 7i to driver in your testing now , but it seems very strange not to see how your test balls react on a longer hybrid or fw (7 wood for example) – when you skip from a 150/160 yd club to a 230 + yd club, that leaves quite a gap in performance expectations, as almost every 2nd shot on a par 5 for average golfers, would involve using something between a 7i and driver. Going to miss that info .

  6. Love it. I’m glad I’m not the only one who hates miss hitting this ball lol 😂. One thing I was wondering is if there is a difference between hitting a forged iron or a non-forged iron. I know there is definitely a feel difference, but if you were to use something like a Ping G440 and then a Srixon ZXi7. It’s just a variable I was wondering about.

  7. The fact that this took #5 and the chrome soft was #1 kind of shook me. I'm still not paying that much for a ball but that's awesome. Love the reviews, Nick.

  8. Happy New year Nick ! This ball obviously isn't for the slower swingers but I have to give Callaway props for their designs & color options ! I wish Titilest & Srixon would loosen up a bit when it comes color or imagination – some splash type designs would be awesome !

  9. I bought some when they had the 4 for 3 in 2024. If you want to charge ProV prices, you better have ProV durability (and I play found Pro Vs). I didn’t find the durability matches the ProV. (I buy overstock PXG Extreme Tours and Mizuno ProX on sale)

  10. Happy New Year, Nick! Let’s make this year even better by growing your community with more engaged subscribers and channel members!

  11. I would say that if Mizuno can get some durability improvements they’ll start making some moves. Both the Pro S and Pro X models performed very well for me. I have a faster swing speed and I’ve been using them Chrome Soft X for 2 years now, but Mizuno might convert me.

  12. Never seen a Callaway Chrome soft for 42, even on sale. They are beyond the price level of any golf ball I would buy and I cannot believe you rated their value way higher than a ProV1.

  13. I have played these since they were released. At 71, I swing slightly slower than you do but my handicap index has always been five or lower. My experience on everything has been very consistent with what you reported.

  14. The Top 100 made me go buy a dozen before Christmas. However, I’m in Michigan and have a few months before I can try them.

  15. Curious if you've got all the ball data collected in a single table. If so, would be great if you could share it. Currently in the process of testing around 15 balls for my junior player. But still would be nice if some established data were out there to help narrow the scope of our testing.
