Played a round yesterday with 30mph “gusts”…but really sustained. Anything into the wind ends up being a pull for me or a chunk. Tailwinds lead to awesome bombs off the tee, but then I fail at club selection and either fly the greens or think I’m a hero and take not enough club, leaving it short.

Result was a 96, burner through a box of balls, hashtag I’m an 8hc.

(Yes, I’m a 46yr dad and like to say “hashtag” to annoy my daughters).

My game still sucks the same way, but it gives me a super reliable excuse

  2. I don’t play much different other than into the wind I generally play the ball a little further back in my stance and try to keep it lower.

Wish my iron shots were in a better place so I could tell you. Got the pulls right now.

4 handicap here and the wind fucks with me. Even down wind is a problem.

Correct me if i’m wrong but i’m sure i heard one of the tour pro’s on a Rick Shiels video say something like every 1 mph of wind behind is 1 yard of help and every 1 mph of wind into is 1.5 yards of hurt.

I don’t play in a windy area but my god when I do it’s a proper test. The general math is wind hurts exponentially more than it helps. Scott Fawcett says whatever the wind is in MPH use that precentage and that is the amount of “hurt” or extra club you have play.

Assuming that is directly into you, if it’s quartering or if you have a certain shot shape that goes with or against the wind it’s tough to judge, really comes from experience. Not to mention any side spin will be greatly exaggerated. There are ways to figure this out by but only if the wind is directly predicatular towards your ball, if it’s swirling or gusting all bets are off.

Playing down wind helps but only something like half as much. It also has a tendency to straighten your flight.

Then you gotta judge the wind, are there trees? Putting, short game.

It’s a whole set of skills to play in windy conditions when you’re use to 5 mph breezes.

yesterday in So Cal? haha the one windy day we’ve had all year

It’s more fun. I think it’s a lot easier to hit it close to the flag into the wind. Downwind you can hit some abnormally long drives. Now tee shots into the wind and downwind approaches are very tough but it’s a good excuse to maintain positive attitude after a bad shot.

As some one who naturally fades most well struck hits, I love trying to play a right to left wind and then slice it so bad I take the wind out of the equation all together

  10. LAzeehustle1337

It makes me feel like it does mentally, but I usually hit it pretty well

  11. I can usually deal with the wind mentally and be smart enough to hit 7 iron from 120 if thats what conditions dictate, but I absolutely fall apart putting if it is windy enough. I’m not a great putter and am already losing strokes there so when I hit a putt and can see the wind move the ball it adds another variable to a part of my game thats already very fragile.

I do enjoy playing in almost any conditions and playing the wind on long shots adds depth to the experience for me. I really enjoy it. I’m trying to carry that attitude to the putting but I still fall apart on super windy days.

Not at all, its going in the rough either way

  13. WY and front range of CO often get gusty. Its not much of a problem if you know how to manage the conditions. In the conditions you mentioned thats a 2 club wind in the face, more club if within 170 yards. Tail winds are often hit and miss, you could sail shots or the tail wind can knock down shots. Theres different winds too, are they up or down drafting? Winds also affect shots based on the time of day. You can assume winds blow down in the morning because its cooler until the air temp rises and winds begin to updraft before the evening temp drops. Just club up in any wind.

Honestly I sometimes play better in windy conditions. It forces me to pause and reconsider the shot with the wind. Where as calm day I might just grip it and rip it. And I learned a trick. So if the wind is 10 mph. Think of it as 10% at 100 yards. So if I have a 100 yard shot into the wind and it’s 10 mph. My stock 100 yard shot should go about 90 yards into the wind and 110 with the wind. At 200 yards it’d be 180,220. So that has helped a lot tbh.

I don’t necessarily score better in the wind, but I typically strike the ball better. The wind really locks me in and I seem to ignore everything. 6.7

  16. As a victim of early extension and high ball flight, it’s a disaster

  17. Training_Painting659

If it’s blowing left to right really hard it actually fixes it

  18. Historical_Chip_2706

Constantly. For some reason it’s always blowing left the right causing ball to all be on the right side. If only it would stop blowing

  19. Oscardoodke2

Hate it. I can handle cold, rain, cold and rain but I’ve never, in all my years of trying, been able to play well in strong winds. It’s a head game thing for me now.

  20. T6TexanAce

Wind is like plumbing. I hate them both and they both hate me.

  21. shooter9260

Consistent wind I don’t mind and actually like the challenge and it also keeps me more mentally focused sometimes because a good swing and strike is more important. But swirly winds are brutal. You think it’s 3 or 9 o’clock and then it turns to 6 as you swing and come up short in the water. Awful feeling.

  22. Marine_1345

I hate the wind all the time. But at least during golf, it messes with your partner as much as it does you

  23. WHSRWizard

I play pretty well in the wind.

The secret for me is to take a lot more club and take short swings. That keeps the ball lower and takes spin off it.

General rule of thumb for headwinds:

    – If you can feel the wind, add 1 club
    – If you can hear it, add 2 clubs
    – If it makes you squint, add 3 clubs
    – If you have to bend over to walk into it, add 4 clubs

  24. LutherOfTheRogues

A lot, but you learn to play with it and club up or down. Shape shots into the wind, flight shots down, etc. A good draw or cut into the wind to hold it on line is so rewarding.

  25. alreadytaken17

It lowers my expectations and I end up playing better. Game is all mental

  26. 0_SomethingStupid

wind can be brutal. I’ve come up short, gone up 4 clubs just to find out what was the “right” club. Hitting a 5i instead of a 9 is just a mindfudge. At a certain point its just worth trying to stay low – take a ton of club and just chip it
