There are several courses within the Bristol metropolis area, and having enjoyed some of those in the previous year, namely The Bristol and Filton, and also having enjoyed a round at Woodlands earlier that morning, I hoped to get a round in at Shirehampton Park.
The club is located 5 miles along the A4 Portway from the centre of Bristol and golf has been played here since 1904. The course is situated a few hundred feet above the River Avon and parts of the course offer views over it, and also the Gordano valley. The course is a tree lined parkland design with use of the natural hills on which it stands, acting as a challenge to the golfer playing here.
The first hole gives an indication of what challenges lie ahead with a narrow tree lined tee shot facing you. If you can find the fairways at Shirehampton Park, then the holes become much easier, but stray offline and its a totally different picture. The second is a short downhill par 3 before the third hole, probably the signature hole, that requires a long accurate drive down the right of this par 5 to open up the green, which is situated back up the hill and round to the left. A difficult double dog leg hole, but one that is truly memorable.
The course opens out a little after this but there are always hills to navigate and it’s a good test of your game, as well as your legs & lungs. I found it a little tiring, having already played 18 holes earlier on a warm spring day, but powered trollies or a buggy would certainly be a big help.
The greens were very nice to play on, if a little firm after the amazing spell of hot and dry weather we’d been experiencing. Similarly the fairways were nicely maintained and presented. Green fees were decent value too and the course was reasonably quiet when I teed off which was also a bonus.
Overall a very nice test of your game on a varied and hilly parkland course. Really accessible too being so close to Bristol and friendly as well, with various enjoyable interactions I had on my way round, both with golfers and members of the public. 👍

Can I ask what Irons you have please? Thanks
Lovely looking tricky course this may give this a try in summer, played thornbury a few years ago and that was nice course
Great to see our course on YouTube! Yes friendliest club in Bristol. Glad you had a good round. What is your WHS handicap?
I keep meaning to give this course a visit but I've never played. It's been on my radar for years. Your video does make it look interesting.
I am missing the dry summer. Hope you have a great new year when it arrives.
