Irons for dummies. We’re going to get you into the right iron category for your game. You’re going to have to profile yourself, but when you do, you’ll be able to look across the whole golf market and understand you fit into category A, B, C, D, wherever you fall. Be honest with yourself, cuz this video is going to be your dummy’s guide to getting the right iron for your game. You’ve booked a fitting. Awesome. Well done. But where do you start? Today’s video is all about irons for dummies. We’re going to break down the different models of iron across various brands. Yes, we’re doing tailor made in this video, but look, if you think you’re a players game improvement iron or a players performance iron or however they fill that jazz up, we’re going to put whatever player category comes into each iron type and then you can go out there and figure out where you sit. Irons can be a minefield, but if you start hitting the TWW, Tiger Woods irons, and you should be in the 790s, you know what? You’re gonna spend a lot of time before you land on the product you should be using. So, let’s start with the Qi iron. This thing is big. It’s beefy. It’s bold. It’s got a fat top line. It’s got a shedload of offset. What do these things mean? They mean when you stick it down and you hit it, you are probably a slicer of the golf ball. So for the righty, you start that thing left, you hit it miles right, you try and help it in the air. You lose yardage because you add dynamic loft. Anytime we’ve got a scooper and they stand there and they hit this thing and they help it in the air, the Qi iron is going to be somewhere you go. That thing is powerful. Look at the bottom of it. It’s got a big fat speed pocket in there, which means it’s got some speed in the low part of the blade. So when it comes off there, the ball speed will be higher. ultra forgiving. As you put it down, it’s got that big white line that helps you align to the target. All these things are designed to help the golfer who’s the newbie in the game, but wants yardage. You’re going to learn that yardage and hitting the golf ball a long way. Controlling the spin, controlling your launch is key to good irons. If you have a fatter, wider sole like those Q Ions do, QI irons do, you’re going to get it pumping through the turf well for you and performing well. So, if you think that’s you, then the Qi iron is probably the way to go for. One call out with this model. I don’t personally like comboing that iron. If you combo that iron, what does comboing mean? Slow down. Combo is when you combination that model with another one. Maybe the long irons. What are long irons? Four, five, six. Get combinationed with seven, eight, nine of a different set. I think it’s very hard to do with the Qi irons because those things are such beasts and they come out quick and they come out strong. They don’t spin much cuz they’re aimed at the golfer that needs the help. So, if you need the help and you’re new to the game, the Qi is probably the way to go. Next up is the absolute king and I’ve got it here in my hand today and this is the 790. This club is ridiculous. I have hitting it here with the TP5X golf ball. Very important you marry up the ball you use with the head type you use. Just checking my alignment there. We’re good for the white flag. But just watch how strong this comes out. Put it behind the ball. Doesn’t have a shedload of offset. So offset is now how the blade sits back. It’s got a nice amount that helps you square up the blade and the hand. So it’s pretty decent, but it’s not ridiculous. The other thing about it, it doesn’t have the white leading edge in there. So you don’t have that alignment tool. So you might be a golfer that is learning to play the game correctly. You want a nice forgiving iron. You may be a weekend warrior and this 790 could be your ticket. not hit particularly great, but guess what? The consistency of this golf club will give me a decent yardage. Let’s check out that because let’s face it, for a 7090 user, yardage is still important. So, first swing out the gate, you can see there was no divots. That thing’s gone 191. This golf club can be your best friend. It will absolutely deliver consistency and power on shot after shot. There’s a decent strike. Look at the apex. I mean, is it ever coming down? That’s the question that you’ve got to ask yourself. 202. So, with a decent strike on a sixiron, I’ve got 200 yards out of that on a club that I’ve not even fitted for me. Now, let’s break it down a bit further. It’s gone 95 on the apex. So it flies very high off a club speed of 91. Anytime the club speed and the apex is in the right area, pretty good. Now players distance iron, that is what they call it. The reason I’ve got the launch monitor out, the reason I’m looking at it is cuz you will spin these less than the number on the bottom. Six iron spinning at 5,000. That is about right. So, if you go for your fitting and you start looking at it, you may be starting to think about, well, is that right for me? The two things I’ve called out, club speed versus apex, if you can hit that and get them close, could be a good fit for you. If you can then get based on a six and a seven iron, which most of your fittings will be based on, then you can get the spin rate less than the number on the blade. So, six spinning at 5,000, then all of a sudden you got the right ticket for you. And that means this thing will be coming out efficiently. It’ll be coming out high and it’ll be consistent. But if you are wanting your first real decent set of players golf clubs, it’s really hard not to look at this. If you’re an elder per elderly guy or girl who’s been a great player and then wants the distance, well, this is going to give it you for sure. If you still want it to cut through the turf, I got two divots there. The first one was a little heavy. It still did its job. The second one cut through the turf. 790 can do it. But there is a sleeker version out there and that is the P770. And this thing for tailor made for me is a bit of a king. So much so that I’ve even got the 770 in my own set. So I didn’t need to bring a demo one out from the kingdom to show you this next part. So for a player that wants to control their spin a little bit more and maybe they’re like am I good enough to advance out of 790s, they’ve got some strength on them. You put this is a 4 iron now you’ve got a slightly smaller top line. So you might be a player that’s starting to think about aesthetics. It will cut through the rough a hair easier in the 770. As you look at the soles of the two of the golf clubs, it’s shorter from back to front and also the speed pocket is still prominent. I like 790s, but I think more golfers out there should maybe be giving this 770 a bit of a look at. Then it comes to a player that is decent at golf, still loves a long iron. Why? Maybe has a 7wood, maybe has a fivewood, needs to fill the gap. Why wouldn’t you then put, and we’ve seen Tommy Fleetwood do it, the 770 in in the four iron? because the results you can get and the speed you can get out of this thing. Little pull, but it’s come out with some power, hasn’t it? I mean, pulls always go a little bit further, so maybe we won’t read too much into it, but it’s come out and given us 229. So, I would generally be looking at this thing about 215, 220 yards. Usually, I can get it to launch a bit higher than that. Think about this though. This is four iron. So if I just keep 227 on that one. But if you’re a player that is wanting a long iron that’s going to be ridiculous, 77 P770 is the way to go. A long iron that’s more powerful, P770 is the way to go. A player that is putting some effort into their golf game, P770 is the way to go. The only thing with the 770 and the 790, you have got to look when you do your fitting at how you’re going to fit in pitching wedge and then your gap wedge. So that’s a big call out. But it’s just the consistency of the window and the flight. I’m a huge fan of this club. A huge fan. And I think anyone out there who’s looking at getting a forgiving iron that can border between the long stuff and the short stuff, this is the way to absolutely go. So then we come into the bulk of my own set P7 CB. This golf club in of itself is now getting into a premium feel. The thing that I feel like I never struggle with with this, my distance control is off the charts. Could it be more forgiving? Yeah. But I’m backing myself to play this club. I mean, it looks how a golf club should look. Very thin sole, so cuts through the turf easy. Somewhat forgiving, but you’re not really going for this club for the forgiving nature. That isn’t something you’d be looking at. Now you’re a guy that wants or a girl that wants a golf club that you know you can shape. A golf club that looks sleek behind the ball and a golf club that’s going to give you a spin rate and a control golf shot. I think with me the best way to talk about this club is whenever you have a back pin, I’m confident that I can hit this and it’ll not go longer than the yardages I’ve practiced. But with it comes that ball flight with quite a high apex and then it lands pretty soft. It’s just a very comfortable shot. You can feel it through the turf and the spin rate comes out around about the number on the bottom. I think it’s a player that has confidence. It’s a player that wants to shape. It’s a player that’s aware of a ball cutting through turf. It’s a player that can control ball flight, but they’re maybe not playing every day, so they want a little bit of a forgiving club. combos very well with the 770 if you weaken the 770. Works very well going into the wedges. So again, if you’re looking at other brands and you want that forged cavity back feel, this is amazing and you want it to work well into your wedges, this is the category you got to go into. I think this is a quality golf club. I’ve played the CB now for quite a long time through the various models. I think the current one is mint. no speed pocket. So on your low strikes, you do lose a bit of yardage. Then we get into the MB and the Tiger Woods model. Um so MB I have here in the blade. Little bit of a different shape to the Tiger 1. The Tiger 1’s are bigger in the pitching wedge, 9 iron, 8 iron. It actually gets smaller as you move down into the three iron. So he wanted larger short irons, more grooves for a different spin rate. the mill grind soles on them so that they’re consistent through the turf and then it gets larger into the nine and the wedge so that the set grades through. So think about what we’ve talked about in some videos about having shafts grade. Tiger actually wanted heads to grade. So he wanted to create the spin, but he also wanted the short irons to look more like the wedges. Interesting fact, as you get into the P7 MB, you’ll see that this one has the mass behind the golf ball and that is you. That is it. You need to be a strikesman to play this. You’re going to get a lot more spin out of it. I find that these clubs don’t go very far. So, you need to be comfortable letting them spin up. You need to be putting feel as a premium and you need to be confident that you’re hitting the middle of the blade. Whenever I play these, I tend to get a little bit concerned about striking it just cuz they are significantly smaller than the CBS. So you can get into a rhythm on the range where you get that beautiful height out of them. But the truth is if you miss them, they’re very difficult to get anything out of them. There is literally nothing. But there’s a high one. So let’s see if we can hit the left to right one as well. Just going through the gears with this. I mean, it’s super easy to do. You can just hit shapes all day. is taking range game to course game is a different thing alto together and that’s where I prefer the gains I get from the CB for a miss strike versus hitting these however they are a club when you hit them providing you’re minting them you don’t want to stop and the reason being is cuz feel is a premium but that golf shot there I mean that’s hardly missed and it’s fanned up short the green out there and I think that that is what you have to realize that everything about this is feedback, feedback, feedback. This is a surgeon’s tool. 770 your entry level to becoming a great player. 790 is everyone’s best friend. It’s like a Labrador. And then as you get into the Qi iron, that becomes the thing that makes golf super easy. So get on to where you are, look at sole designs, think about speed pockets, feel them off turf. I know that’s hard to do. And then be honest with yourself and leave the ego at the door. And that is why I play the CBS because the ego’s left at the door. It’s just a bit more confidence inducing in the look. Other companies, like I say, have models that range all over this. I think these irons are mint. If you get into the wrong iron, and this is why I love outdoor fitting, you’re going to see ballooning. You’re going to see a problem with the strike. You’re also going to see pain when it comes to your dispersion and it comes to distance control. That’s why I like you getting into the different lies. If you can try them out fairway bunkers if you can try them off side slopes if you can. All these things are obviously difficult to do. But how many times on a golf course do we hit from the same spot over and over. It simply doesn’t happen. So go for a shot, take a break, hit a shot, take a break, hit a driver, come back, hit a sevenwood, grab the iron. The fitting is your fitting. manage the time and then be honest with yourself because if you’re getting the wrong one, it’s going to cost you strokes.

  1. I picked up set of used Miura blades to practice & I hit them better than anything. The height & spin were so insane! Plus feel but like Trottie said the distance isn't best. Even at my 92ss 7i I was only carry 155-158y. Now I game them 8/9/P and use Zxi7 4/5/6/7 to help with distance. I want to play Taylormade but sadly they hate Left handed golfers so no MB option 😢

  2. Love your videos. …This one is particularly interesting to me. I was fitted (outside hitting off grass) into a custom build set of hollow body player distance irons last summer, tested the 790 a good bit during the fitting, and two months later I absolutely hated them. The fliers/jumpers made distance consistency ridiculous. I'm now playing a custom build set of forged MB irons (through a different company), and the distance consistency and dispersion is infinitely better. …my take is, don't let a fitter talk you into something. Hit everything. All styles and types of irons – if they give you hollow body player distance irons, ask to hit forged cavity backs. You never know. There are a variety of reasons your handicap might be high, and it might not be from the tees and fairways. It might be on and around the green (something else to work on).

  3. How can an average Joe get into a fitting at the kingdom? I work as a deputy sheriff in San Diego and would love to find a way to get there. Currently playing p790 but am interested in getting fit into a 770/CB combo set after putting in a lot of work lately.

  4. Compare lofts of irons from different OEM brands and models.
5 iron lofts vary from 21 degrees to 28 degrees.
Often easier to change shafts on existing heads from 2 to 5 years ago than buy newest latest greatest model…
At a fitting beware, they fit you with std shafts for that brand that are only available.
R flex in 1 shaft brand is not R flex in another.

  5. The P 790 was my choice and they are perfect for my game. Can’t think of any other club to replace them. 😊😊😊

  6. I just got fit for a beautiful TM 700 series combo set! P7CB PW – 7i, 770 6-5i, and 790 4i. Amazing set!

  7. Its funny but after playing a set of RAC OS irons for years i decided to get a new set. because i felt i might losing yardage (in my mid 50’s now) so i went with Qi’s.. well i got my yardage back and then some. 7i could go anywhere from 165 -185 for example …because my swing ,can be, inconsistent my scores went through the roof . I had given my rac’s away to a friend so i was screwed..so i ordered 2 new sets (not TM) ,one more for a better player (CB’s) and one a generation or 2 before the QI’S game improvement..those game improvement irons are close to the old racs with a bit more distance and the CB’s make my distances closer to playing partners distances (which im normally longer historically)but usually with them i am slightly shorter ,nevermind if miss hit! Long winded point : since im in a transition in regard to my swing i thought i shouldnt waste money on a fitting .i was wrong and when im in the market for irons again (ill be in my 60’s or older 🤦🏼‍♂️)im fairly confident ill go for my first fitting 😜👍🏼✌️
..or imma just getting 790’s i wanted from the get go but was afraid to spend probably $1400 when all said and done without a clue …now im a bit more informed and now know they’re probably perfect for me ,and i spent all of that $1400+ on the 3 sets even after selling the qi’s for$500 to a family member 🤷🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

  8. I love my P790s. Got fitted in April. They arrived in May. Turned in my lowest score ever in my first round out with them. Proceeded to beat that low round with the my last round in November. They’ve changed my game completely for the better. May look into a combo 770/790 set for next year.
