Kevin Hughes, whose career was curtailed due to being the innocent victim of a life-changing road traffic accident, swapped the familiar surroundings of the south of England to become a golfing pioneer in Indonesia.

He joined the PGA in 1974 and spent four years working in the pro shop at Southampton Municipal Golf Course in Hampshire before heading across the county border to Surrey to take up a post at Moore Place Golf Club, Esher.

He was elected to PGA Membership in 1981 and had two spells serving the club. The first lasted 11 years until 1989, the second from the autumn of 1992 until early 1996. In between times Kevin spent three years working for Petron Golf Clubs.

On leaving Moore Place for the second time, Kevin worked at Tunbridge Wells Golf Club in Kent for a year and a half before returning to Esher and a six-year stint at Fairmile Golf Range.

The increasing popularity of the game in the far east following the turn of the century, especially Thailand and Indonesia, for both local people and tourists created a demand for PGA Professionals to help run the clubs and coach.

Attracted by the challenge and change in lifestyle, Kevin accepted a coaching role at Padang Golf Sukajadi near Batam in Indonesia

He served the facility for nine years before the catastrophic effects of a road traffic accident forced him to return home and take early retirement.
