The second round of the 2025 Tour Championship at East Lake delivered plenty of world-class golf on Friday, but the highlight wasn’t a booming drive or a clutch birdie. Instead, it came in the form of a light-hearted prank from Scotty Sheffller that left Russell Henley laughing and a little redfaced. The moment unfolded on the par for eighth hole. After Henley tapped in for par and Sheffller rolled in a birdie putt, Henley extended his fist for a congratulatory bump. Sheffller with a mischievous grin pressed his open hand down on Henley’s knuckles in a playful paper beats rock fake out. Cameras caught the exchange and both players broke into smiles as they walked to the next tea. Henley laughed about the moment afterward, though he admitted it caught him off guard. He was just being mean to me. Pretty usual, Henley joked. Maybe next time he’ll give me a regular fist bump. That was pretty embarrassing though. For Henley, however, there was little else to be embarrassed about. Following up his blistering opening round 61, the Georgia native carded a composed four under 66 to reach 13 underpar. Good enough to share the lead with England’s Tommy Fleetwood. Fleetwood, looking to bounce back from a tough finish at last week’s BMW Championship, fired a sparkling 63 to vault into contention. Just two shots back is Cameron Young, who scorched East Lake with a 62 to sit at 11 under. Patrick Kentlay and Robert McIntyre are both at 10 under, while Sheffller remains in striking distance at 8 under after a steady 69. Henley credited his strong position to sharp ball striking and confident putting. Yeah, I hit my driver awesome. I’ve been driving it really well these last two weeks, he said. From the fairway, you can attack a lot of these holes. I feel like I hit a lot of good shots today that didn’t quite end up close enough, but I puted it well, hit my lines, and just kept finding fairways. That’s what you’ve got to do around here. Playing in his home state also seemed to bring out his best. I love the Bermuda Greens. They put really true, Henley said. And there’s just a good feeling being back in Atlanta, being close to home. His day started with a spark when he chipped in on the opening hole. I had a really good lie and was able to clip it really nice. Obviously a bonus for it to trickle in, he recalled. Later, he scrambled from the bunker on 18 to save par. A shot he described as great given how short-sighted he was. Still, as much as Henley’s scorecard reflected precision and composure, the most memorable moment of the day came from Sheffller’s playful jab. For a brief instant, the intensity of the tour championship gave way to a dose of locker room humor and a reminder that even under pressure, golf can still deliver a smile.
