The last time Harris English played professional golf, his tournament was cut just a bit short, but not at his choice or recommendation.

English was a Ryder Cup star for the 2025 U.S. team as they took on Europe at Bethpage Black in New York, but he had to sit on the bench during the attempted comeback day for the Americans.

“Like I’m gearing up, ready to go play a Sunday Singles match at the Ryder Cup. That was one of my two main goals this year was to make the Ryder Cup. To not be awarded that opportunity to play on Sunday, it really sucked,” English said.

America was down 11.5-4.5 headed into Sunday, and English was held out due to the ‘envelope rule.’ Viktor Hovland had to sit out of Sunday Singles because of an apparent neck injury, which then forced English to sit out, as the two were set to face each other in the final round.

It was only the fourth time in Ryder Cup history that the envelope rule had come into play, and English was not happy about it.

“And then Keegan told me, and it was a little bit of a shock, and I kind of had to process that for a little bit, and then put my earpiece on and microphone on and kind of be another pseudo assistant captain,” English continued.

Hovland also joined in on the conversation, saying that he felt for English. “I felt really bad for Harris (English), who also didn’t get to play a match, even though there was nothing wrong with him,” said Hovland. “He just didn’t get to play, and he was upset about that.”

English commented, saying he was upset but still had a great time on the sideline. “I had a great time watching those guys compete on Sunday and almost coming back to beat the Europeans was incredible,” said English.

“I was just looking at the pairings earlier that morning and was like, I can see a scenario where we literally win every single match and it almost happened. So happy to be a part of that team and watch those guys battle to the finish.”

U.S. Ryder Cup captain, Keegan Bradley, commented after America lost the biennial event, saying “I think it’s obvious to everybody in the sports world, in this room.” However, European captain Luke Donald had a differing opinion. “The rule is the rule, and it’s been in place for a long time,” he stated.

Speaking before the RSM Classic, the last PGA event of the 2025 season, English gave even more insight into his experience and on world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

“He just would square face hit like a normal chip, and it comes out the same every single time. He does the same thing every time,” said English, talking about Scheffler.

“I had never thought about it that way and just watching him do it, and then myself trying, like wow, that’s a big difference. He’s a magician around the greens. I love the way he goes about his game and I think we think similarly, we’re feel players.”
