[Music] All of the talk surrounding the Dallas Mavericks is whether or not this team needs to blow it up and move on in the Cooper Flag era and try to rebuild around their 18-year-old potential generational talent. So, on today’s show, we’re going to break down this Mavericks roster, who has trade value, who doesn’t have trade value, and who just needs to get the hell out of there. We’ll start with this chart. And shout out to Bobby Marks because I don’t know where I would be without Bobby. He broke down the Mavericks roster here. And I’ll leave this up for a couple of seconds so you guys can see it. Uh you have the rookie scale contracts on the left, your big contracts on the right. Below that all of your trade restrictions, and on the bottom left are your other your quote unquote other contracts as well, which is Brandon Williams. Uh look, the long short of it is this. There is not a lot of flexibility around the Dallas Mavericks roster and around their trade assets at the moment. They do not own their own first round pick after this year for each of the next four seasons. They either owe it in a pig swap or they owe it outright to somebody else. Look, it’s not a great situation for any team to be in right now. And the new GM, whoever it may be, has a lot of work ahead of them. Hell, Matt Ricardi and Michael Finley as the interim GMs have a lot of work in front of them as well leading up to the February trade deadline. So, I’ll ask you guys down in the comments to start off today’s show before we get in to this roster. Should the maps completely rebuild? Simple for yes and for no down there in the comments section. For me, I think I’m leaning heavily towards those yeses. The Mavericks roster looks like this currently. And uh look, not very good. We all know this. They have four wins on the season. And by the way, Cooper Flag downgraded to questionable tonight. He’s dealing with a little illness. So, we’ll see if he plays against the Knicks. That’s a late tip off, but just this is where the roster sits at the moment. This is your current starting five. Uh although Daniel Gaffford is the starting center as uh instead of Derrick Lively, but Lively is finally back from injury and he’s on a minute restriction. Um look, and then you have guys like Dante Exom, Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis who are all injured. You can see the rest of the roster right there. But this is what the current roster looks like at the moment. All right, we’ll start with the guys who are going nowhere. Number one is obvious, Cooper Flag, as he was the number one overall pick in the 2025 draft. He will not be traded. And look, if Nico was the general manager, I would say that’s not a certainty. He will not be traded by this organization. They are going to build around him for the future. And the further this season rolls on, the more confident I feel in Flag being a franchise cornerstone for this team going forward. Like I think he can be a multi-time all-star. I wouldn’t call him a generational talent quite maybe like Luca or like some other guys who are building themselves as true NBA superstars at the moment, but I really like how Flag is positioning himself to be one of the NBA’s best players at the moment. And then PJ Washington isn’t going anywhere for a couple of reasons. Number one, I think he’s really important to this franchise. He’s a guy who grew up in Fris, went to high school in Fris, a local kid, understands this community and what it means to be a Dallas Maverick. So, I think that’s important. But also, because of how PJ’s PJ Washington’s contract extension was kind of ironed out the day before the season, he signed that max deal. He is not eligible to be traded this season. His trade restriction ends on March 10th, I believe. And the trade deadline is February 9th. February 5th, something like that. So, Washington will not be eligible to be traded this season. He will be a Dallas Maverick until the offseason at least when maybe they could potentially trade him, but I don’t see that happening at least anytime soon. But, so outside of those two who are untouchable and who will not be traded, everybody else is completely fair game when it comes to trades and when it comes to just flat out letting them go and not being a member of the Dallas Mavericks going forward. And if you want more on the Dallas Mavericks, you can find it on Twitter. Follow me on Twitter right there at jeff_c27 on the bottom of your screen. My goal is to get to 2800 followers as soon as possible. Currently sitting at 2756. I think I did that math right. Yeah, good. I’m not a math guy. I failed uh algebra in high school and I had to retake it. But give me a follow on Twitter, Jeff_c27 for the latest Mavericks news and rumors, analysis, live tweeting during the games, and all of that good stuff. These guys absolutely have to go. There is no two ways about it. I want them off my basketball team as soon as humanly possible. Dante Exom, we’ll talk about him in a minute. And it’s just absolutely absurd what’s going on with him. Caleb Martin, I think, is the worst basketball player I have ever seen wear a Dallas Mavericks uniform. And that includes Ben Bentle. Do you know who Benel is? If you’re a real Mavs fan, you might. Otherwise, if you’re like in the weeds, you’ll know who he is. He’s one of the worst basketball players I’ve ever seen. I’m talking about like Ricky Leo levels of bad. That’s how bad Caleb Martin has been. Uh Jaden Hardy is horrific. Now, he does have some NBA skills, like he can actually score the basketball, so he’s a little better than Cayla Martin. And then D’Angelo Russell DL is so bad. He’s here’s the thing about him. even when he’s good, like the other night in the fourth quarter when he got the Mavs right back into the game and kind of almost got them on a comeback and then he takes them right back out of the game with two consecutive turnovers. I do not want to see any more basketball from D’Angelo Russell. If he played zero seconds the rest of the season, my life would certainly be improved. Oh, and by the way, what do all these guys have in common? They were all Nico Harrison acquisitions. Dante Exom was signed because Nico liked him over the last two seasons and he knew that Exum was not going to be ready for the start of the season. Could the Mavericks have found another guard who was healthy that could do some of the things that Dante could have done? Absolutely. And I like Dante Axom for the record. I actually do like him. like when he plays, I do think he provides uh some spark on both ends of the floor as a point guard, as a point of attack defender, as a guy who was a sharpshooter. He shot well over 40% from three the last two seasons. He just doesn’t play and he hasn’t even practiced yet this season. He is nowhere close to a return for the Mavericks. So, why did the Mavs even bring him in knowing that he would not be able to help this team out? Makes absolutely no sense. Like I said, I’m an exm fan, but if he’s not ready to go, find someone who is. Hell, you could even cut Dante right now and go sign someone to a vet when his when the uh pro rate goes under 1.8 million because that’s how much the Mavericks are under the second apron. Whenever that date is, whether it’s December 20th, I don’t remember the exact date, but when the Mavs can sign someone to a veteran minimum and still be under that apron, cut Dante and go sign somebody because my goodness, it is just a joke that he hasn’t even practiced or played for this team. And then we’ll move on to Hardy and Martin. I mentioned it earlier. Look at these contracts for these guys. It is an absolute embarrassment that these contracts are on the Dallas Mavericks books. Jaden Hardy is on the books for each of the next this season and next at 6 million. There’s a team option for 6 million in 2728. I imagine the Mavericks will obviously decline that if he’s still in the NBA by then. Caleb Martin was obviously traded for in the second worst NBA trade in history last year when they traded Quinton Grimes in the 35th overall pick for Caleb Martin. That turned out to be Jai Broom. Cayla Martin is under contract for the next two seasons at 9 and a half and 10 million and then has a player option in 2728 for 9.3 million. Cayla Martin has 27 total points with the Mavericks since he’s been here in February. I imagine he will be picking up that player option of 9.3 million because he is literally stealing money from this organization. He offers nothing. Nothing. The only good game Caleb had, ironically enough, was the final game of the Nico Harrison era where he was playing against Giannis. And he defends Giannis pretty well. Like, he actually does know how to do that. Unfortunately, the Mavericks are in the Western Conference, number one. Number two, they are not in contention to where they would be in the playoffs where they would need someone like Aaya Barton to have a special assignment to defend somebody like that. If I could give away a literal basketball, one basketball, not even a bag, one basketball for Cayla Martin, I would do it in an absolute heartbeat. The guy is absolutely terrible. Uh, in summary as well, like the Nico damage is just irreversible. The salary cap hell, the draft pick, hell, the roster hell he put this team in is just something you don’t recover from overnight, and it’s going to take years to undo all of the that he did to this team. And it’s again absolutely disgusting what he did to this franchise and how he operated and us the fans have to pay for it in the long term. You guys tell me besides the Luca Donuch trade which we all know is the worst. What was the worst move Nico Harrison made? Was it giving Jaden Hardy the three-ear 18 million extension was it trading for Caleb Martin? I think it’s the Martin deal but you guys let me know down there in the comments what you think the worst move outside of Luca that Nico Harrison made was. Now, these guys on your screen right now actually do have a little bit of value and value to teams that are contending here in the NBA. Naji Marshall, Daniel Gaffford, Brandon Williams, and Max Christie. All of these guys can be rotational players on good teams. Naji Marshall a really good defender. He’s a good playmaker at his size of about 67 230. He can really uh operate the an offense efficiently within the flow of an offense as well. and he’s just a competitive dog. Like I really do like Naji Marshall and he has some value. Same goes with Daniel Gaffford. He’s a high effort, high energy big who can protect the rim, who can play in the pick and roll and who’s a excellent finisher around the rim. He can help a team and he has no trade restriction after the Mavericks sign him to a three-year $54 million extension this off season. Brandon Williams is playing on a veteran minimum this year. He’s going to be an unrestricted free agent next year given his status in the league, which will be interesting to see if the Mavericks actually do trade him at the deadline because I think Williams could kind of get some money this off season and maybe there’s a team looking for point guard help that could use the services of Be will at the trade deadline and the Mavs could actually get something of value, maybe a second round pick in return for Be. And I would like to keep both Williams and Max Christie long term. I think Christie can be a starter on a good team in the league. Like, I really like his ability to shoot. He’s been a knockdown three-point shooter this season for the Mavericks. He’s really evolving his offensive game to where he’s able to kind of score the basketball in all different kinds of ways. And he’s a very good perimeter defender as well. So, I would keep Christie longterm and he’s signed up for the next three seasons at like 8 million a year. So, very affordable, a good contract. So, I would be absolutely open to keeping Max Christie and Brandon Williams for that matter. But Williams is the case where he’s on that veteran minimum deal. Are you going to keep him longterm? Like, will you give him an extension or will you be able to resign him considering he’s an unrestricted free agent? If a team comes at you with the second round pick for Brandon Williams or I you’re not getting a first, but if they if you get a back end of the first round pick slash the second round pick, I think I would consider it if I was the Maverick’s general manager. Look, you’re not going anywhere this year. And though he’s a really good player, I do think that trading him should be a possibility at the deadline. We’ll get into the rest of the roster here in just a moment. But before we do that, today’s show is sponsored by Price Fix. You and I make decisions every single day. But making those right decisions on Price Picks, they can get you paid. Super simple to play. Just pick more or less on at least two to six player stat projections, and you can watch your winnings roll in. I do have a projection for this week’s football slate and let me tell you it’s a pretty good one. I’m gonna take the more on Drake May pass yards at 251 and a half, the more on Caleb Williams rushing yards and the more on Rasheed Rice rushing plus receiving touchdowns. Those are my picks for this week of the football action, but you can make picks of your own as well. Over with our friends at Price Picks. Download the Price Picks app today and use code CLNS for $50 in lineups when you play your first $5 lineup. one more time. That is code CLNS for $50 in lineups when you play your first $5 lineup. That link will be in the comments and description of today’s show. Price picks, it is good to be right. I have no earthly idea what to think about these two guys when it comes to the trade market. We’ll start with Dive who just cannot stay healthy. Now, he currently is healthy. He’s on a minutes restriction though and he’s probably not playing backto backs for the foreseeable future. So, he’s currently playing, but he just doesn’t stay on the court enough. And Klay Thompson is completely cooked. But we’ll start with live in his future. The Mavs just can’t give him an extension, which he is eligible for next summer. After his third year in the league, he is eligible for his rookie extension. And man, if I’m the Maverick’s decision maker, I would be scared shitless of giving Derrick Lively a long-term extension with a lot of money. He just doesn’t play enough basketball games. He missed a bunch of games his rookie season. And I believe he played in 55 games. Last year he was limited to just 36 games. This year he’s already missed a bunch of time. Like there’s just no way I’m giving Derrick Lively a three or four year extension at what 14 $15 million plus. No chance. Just simply wouldn’t do it. So if you can get a a good value in return, a first round pick for Lively, I would absolutely consider it if I was the Mavericks because I just don’t believe in Liv’s ability to stay healthy. He’s dealt with an injury in his lone year at Duke, dealt with an injury his rookie season, dealt with injuries last year, has dealt with a bunch of them this year as well. I mean, at some point, you just got to cut bait because he just doesn’t play enough. And you need guys who their best ability is availability. Lively simply isn’t that. And as far as Klay Thompson goes, he is just completely cooked. Uh he’s washed. Now, he did have an a game the other day where he hit a couple threes in a row. And I’ll tell you this, man, when Klay Thompson gets hot, there is few things like it in basketball, like watching him just go unconscious is absolutely unbelievable. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t happen very much anymore. And he’s just he’s he’s done. He’s well over the hill as a basketball player. I know he started out super slow last year as well and ended up with really good numbers to finish the year, but I don’t know if he gets out of this slump, shooting just 31% from three on over seven attempts. He’s averaging 21 minutes a night as well, mostly coming off the bench. He started, he was in the starting line at the start, now he’s coming off the bench. And I don’t really see a way out of this for Clay. Like I hope he is able to kind of resurrect his form and is able to knock down a few more shots because if he does, I do think you could find some value for Clay is he’s still making 16 million over the next two seasons, but you could certainly find a team who could use his shooting off the bench. I know 16’s kind of a big number, so you’d probably have to be a part of a bigger trade if you were to move on from Clay, but I do think that he’s his best days are well behind him, and I don’t know if he has any value as far as the trade market goes either. And then your prized assets here, your two assets that can give you the most return on the trade market. Kyrie Irving rehabbing from that torn ACL. Everyone says Kyrie is ahead of schedule, by the way. I don’t know if he is or not. Tim McMahon put out a report earlier that his return to the court is based on other reasons, not his rehab. Other reasons, aka the Mavericks are tanking this year. And then Anthony Davis is rehabbing from that calf strain. Going to miss at least the next three or four games, and we’ll see if he gets back on the court. We kind of broke down these guys uh potential to be traded in our video yesterday. So, that’s why you subscribe to the channel cuz we talked in depth about Anthony Davis. We talked about Kyrie Irving and whether or not the Mavericks should trade him as well on uh at the deadline this year. So, go check out our video from yesterday. But to give you the synopsis of what I said, I think the Mavericks need to get Anthony Davis healthy so they can put him in the shop window and prove that he can stay on the court and prove that he can help out a contending team. I think that’s the best way to get the best value out of Anthony Davis. Get him healthy, trade him away, whether it’s at the deadline, whether it’s in the offseason. That is the best course of action for the Dallas Mavericks is trading Anthony Davis, seeing what you can get for him. You’re not going to get what you want to get for him, but hopefully you can get at least something. And most importantly, you can get off the money that he’s making because good god, good god. I would keep Kyrie Irving, though. I I really love Kyrie. And ultimately, I would make I would give Kyrie the decision power here. Should the Mavs trade Kyrie? If he asks for it, you can absolutely trade him. If he wants to stay, let him stay. I think Kyrie has earned that right to kind of dictate his future here with the Mavericks. And if he wants to go play for a championship, by all means. If he wants to stick around here and help out with the rebuild, by all means. So, whatever Kai wants, I would grant him that wish. I think he’s done a good He’s done plenty of good for this organization, and I think he should have uh that power, so to speak, as far as uh making the f decision for the future, the final years of his career. So, that’s what the Mavericks roster looks like. Now, basically in summary, trade everyone except Cooper Flag and PJ Washington. And if Kyrie wants to stay, keep him as well. I would love to keep Max Christie and Brandon Williams if it works out that way. But everybody else can likely get traded if it they are uh traded for the right price essentially is where I’m at at the moment. One more time, give me a follow on Twitter at jeff_c27. LET ME KNOW! Besides the Luka trade, what is the worst move Nico made?
Cooper flag reminds me of Kmart so much just with a little better handles and a little less athleticism
Any Mavs fan question Cooper Flagg’s ability to become an All-Star needs to seriously stop commenting on Mavs content and GTFO. You guys are just butthurt Luka/Laker 🍆 riders 🙄
They tried to build around Jaa Morat, they tried to build around Zion, they tried to build around Tray Young, they tried to build around Cade, they tried to build around Irving Durant and Harden.
All of this is more of a dream than a strategy. Come on, guys
I keep saying to keep Flagg, Brandon Williams, Max Christie and PJ and build around them
Casino owners are all about the money!!! Casino gambling!!! They don't give a flip about that basketball team
I would blow up all the big money players with the exception of Kyrie. It would be good for him to be around Flagg for a couple of years to mentor him.
This team should be built around Flagg and Lively
How about this as a take, Coopers ceiling is Kawhi
Late first for Williams? The likelihood they will be better than Williams is a gamble
Late first for Williams? The likelihood they will be better than Williams is a gamble
Treating lively like he is made of China as a 21 year old is crazy. I think without Luka he isn’t anywhere near the player fans say. His passing is so over rated, looks straight to the weak side corner for a pass without a lob maestro is nothing special.
You can’t spell TRADE without AD
Keep: Cooper, PJW, Christie & B. Williams
Trade: D-Lo, D-Lively, Martin & A.D.
Trade: Kyrie if the Mavs are well under .500
Trade Caleb and lively waive exum
Nico TRULY needs to be investigated for this move… nothing makes sense in this trade, NOTHING!!!
Just trade Kai to the Rockets.. we hate to see him wasting his remaining time in a washed team with a glassman team mate..
Stupid DLo get off my Mavs
Build Around Coop PJ Max Cisse
I think they should trade for Luka Doncic.
Blow it up
Coach too
Well everyone want it to be fast. But you are dealing with injured players which lowers the trade value
Cuban never valued draft picks
Tading does not get you out of the lottery over the next 4 years
Let them play it out if we trade AD then Kyrie won't play this season and will want out
Ad lively and a first for Colby white and buzelis and expiring. Do a top 5 protected pick and they may include buzelis but that’s iffy. Why you add the pick.
Trading Williams should only be done as add in for a bigger trade as incentive. A 2nd doesn’t do much. Only reason I would do that is to help with our draft pick.
Klay for knect and if the lakers feel they are contenders with LeBron back
If AD looks good all the Stan’s will say you can’t trade him. Said the same thing about Mr unreliable THJ
Y
