DP World Tour Championship final-round predictions

Rory McIlroy, the 4-1 pre-tournament recommendation of Racing Post Sport’s Steve Palmer, made three birdies in the last five holes of his third round to move ominously into a share of the DP World Tour Championship lead on -13 alongside Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen.

While there may be a sense of inevitability that the Northern Irishman will lift this trophy for the fourth time – he is best-priced at 2-1 to do so – there are no fewer than six players just one shot off the lead and one of those is Rasmus Hojgaard, another player recommended by Palmer at 20-1 who is now 11-1.

Tommy Fleetwood, Laurie Canter, Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick and Angel Ayora, who would have been tied at the top had it not been for a bogey at the last, are all one stroke behind the leading pair, while Justin Rose, Ludvig Aberg and Nicolai Hojgaard are a further shot in arrears.

Englishman Fleetwood has enjoyed a season to remember, having broken his PGA Tour duck at the Tour Championship, played a crucial role for Europe at the Ryder Cup and also won the DP World India Championship.

Making a playoff in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship set the 34-year-old up nicely for this trip to the Earth Course, where he has finished runner-up twice, and he should be able to outscore Laurie Canter in Sunday’s twoball.

Fleetwood’s win in the USA has taken him to another level, providing him with the belief that he can land the biggest prizes, and he can get the better of Canter, who hasn’t quite had that extra spark this week with three rounds of 68.

Make it a twoball double by adding in Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg, who has been playing alongside John Parry for the last two rounds and has managed to outscore the Englishman both times.

Aberg will be joined by Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose for the final 18 holes and while the latter boasts plenty of experience, he finished Saturday poorly with dropped shots in two of his last four holes and his energy levels seem to be sapping.

The Earth Course has been very scorable this week and one player worth keeping an eye out for on Sunday is Haotong Li, who has shot back-to-back rounds of 66 to move into tied-11th.

The Chinese ace has made 13 birdies and an eagle over his last 36 holes, evidence of his ability to make things happen, and he provides good value to record a top-ten finish.
