Is your wedge game costing you strokes every round? Then this exact routine might be the perfect drill to add to your next range session! This wedge routine helped Dustin Johnson become a Major Champion and World No. 1. GOLF’s Maddi MacClurg walks your through DJ’s routine and dials in the distances with the @fullswinggolf KIT Launch Monitor!

What is DJ’s Wedge Routine?
Johnson’s wedge routine is simple and straightforward. With each wedge, he takes half, three-quarter and full swings — five to 10 shots per swing length — tracking how far each carries. The goal is to land each ball within a tight yardage window.

It’s a repeatable system that Johnson completes ahead of every competition round and the precision is what makes this combine-style drill so effective.

I’m going to practice a little differently today. And that’s going to start with how I begin my practice session. Uh I saw Dustin Johnson talk about his wedges and how he warms up with them before every round. What club did you just grab? Is that a 60? 60. So I’ll work through all three of my wedges, which would be 60, 54, and you touch them all. Pitch and wedge. I kind of have three shots with each wedge, like a half, a 3/4, and a stock. And so I’ll kind of work through I’ll work through those with all three of my wedges. Each of his wedges he makes a half swing, a three/4er swing, and then a full swing. And he tries to confirm that the yardages are the same each time. Uh I think he hits between five and 10 with each for each swing. Five to 10 balls. Um today I’m just going to hit five balls around the same yardage. So, you know, going to start with the half swing with my lob wedge, my highest lofted wedge, and then move all the way up to my gap wedge. And I’m going to give myself about a five yard buffer [Music] 56. [Music] Go 52. All right, that counts. G clean my grooves and then I’ll move on to the 3/4 swing 60. Okay, man. I hit that one really high. But 64. So, we’ve got half swing, 3/4. Now, we’re moving on to full swing. I wouldn’t normally hit with this club, so it may end up going the same yardage as um my three/4er swing. Okay, maybe my yardage is 65 with the full swing. [Music] 70. I will take that. Switch to the 56° here. 65. Wow. 67. All right. Now, we’re going to do three quarter swing. There we go. 70. There we go. That’s it. 72. All right. Moving on to full swing with the 56. 80 yards. Okay, that sounds about right. Boom. 80. All right, we’re done with the 56 now. Now we’re moving on to my gap wedge. Okay, 75 for the half swing. 78 again. All right, so 3/4 swing, 83 yards. 88. Yeah. All right. So, now we’re going to move on to full swing about 95. 100. We’re good. All right. So, just completed DJ’s uh wedge combine. You know, his pre-round warm-up. It took me about 45 minutes to an hour to go through all three clubs. So, this is definitely something that you might have to uh change and tailor to your uh timing and your own routine. I think it’s a great drill. I see why all the pros trust it.
