Hey guys, I’m a total beginner and I grabbed this set from Goodwill yesterday for $25. I just wanted something cheap but I don’t know if these are decent or if they’re gonna hold me back.

Here’s what I got:
• Callaway Big Bertha War Bird 5-wood
• Tommy Armour Silver Scot Collector irons (3–8)
• MacGregor Jack Nicklaus “Golden Bear” 9-iron

I’m mainly wondering:
• Are these fine for starting out?
• Good enough for the range and casual rounds?
• Do I need to re-grip or clean anything before using them?
• Anything I should know about older clubs like this?

    My beginner elbow already hurts.

Swing soft with those irons. Learn the basics. They will be fine for a time.

Should’ve spent it on some balls and get some decent clubs

The 5 wood though older is still a great club. Those irons however are going to be very punishing. Keep a lookout and you want to find a set that is cavity back meaning the back of them is hollowed out.

Those are the style of irons that folks started out with in the 60’s. Today’s cavity back/ perimeter weighted irons are much easier to hit than those clubs – the game is already very difficult, newer clubs would actually make it easier…

They’re fine. For a while. Irons will be very hard to hit without flushing it.

Cool collector set but def NOT a good beginner set.

Oh my. The Callaway is a bit of a find. The irons are relics and you would be better off taking them on a larping journey.
