In this video, I put the TaylorMade TP5 and TP5X golf ball to the test to see how it really performs in 2025. From driver distance and iron control to greenside spin and feel off the putter, I break down every key performance factor to help you decide if the TP5 or TP5X works for the average golfer.
Most tour golf balls like the Pro V1, Chrome Tour, and Bridgestone Tour B X don’t test well for average golfers. However the TP5 might finally change that.
As Always, here are our testing parameters:

So, I don’t feel like the TP5 really needs much of an introduction. I If you haven’t heard of it this at this point, then you’re probably living under a rocker. I don’t even know why you’re here cuz like why are you clicking on this video? But let’s be real, the TP5, it’s been around forever and you know, I’ve been heavily critical of it in the past. I’m heavily critical about if a golf ball needs five layers or not. I think it might be a little gimmicky, but I get it. They’re in it. They can’t really change it at this point. That’s kind of your your stick, right? Here [Music] we go. Let’s start with pricing and design. If we look at this chart right here, as you can see, these are both five layer golf balls, which that’s their stick. That’s what kind of separates them from the rest of the bunch. Uh they definitely are urethane, of course. I would expect that. And if you look at the price point, they come in at about $55 a dozen. Now, Tailor Made doesn’t have too many big bulk deals, but recently they’ve started doing two for 95. Um, I’m not sure if they’re copying Callaway or if Callaway copied them. I’m pretty I’m not sure. It’s one of the two, but Callaway started doing this a few months ago. It’s a good deal. So, getting them for 47 opposed to 55 is a good deal. At least it helps a little bit, but let’s be honest, it’s still on the really, really expensive side. Let’s check out the front of these golf balls. Now, you’ll notice I have the Pix models here. We’ll cover that in just a second, but let’s look at the plain white model first. This is what the logo looks like. Tailor made. Pretty basic logo, but it gets the job done. If you look at the alignment tool, it’s very basic. You know, it’s very u skinny, I guess, is the right word. It’s not super thick. So, if we just look, you kind of have to ignore the the pics part, but it’s very hard to just see the irregular alignment tool, but who cares about that because Tailor Made, just like Callaway, has all these different collaborations and alignment tools, alignment aids, including the stripe here, which is fantastic. This is what they came out with most recently. A lot of people love that clean look of the stripe. It looks awesome. It’s It’s great for aligning your ball up, great for feedback. They also have this Pix model here, like I said, which the Pix model is. You line it up here in the middle where it says tailor made. Then as the ball rolls, you use the pictures as your alignment tool. That’s pretty cool, too. Very unique, very different. And what I like about it is that it’s very uh open to all golfers. So, as far as design goes, yeah, I mean, it doesn’t get much better than that. Tailormaid’s always had a really good design. I love their collabs. I love, you know, they did a Red Bull collab last year I showed. They’re always doing something fun, which is really cool. And it’s not just their golf balls. They do it on, you know, their equipment, uh, clubs, accessories, head covers. Uh, it’s pretty easy to be a tailor made guy, especially if you’re someone who has a personality. Without further ado, let’s get out to the chipping and putting green and let’s see how they do around there. Oh, excellent. Yeah, all kinds of rotation, all kinds of bite, all kinds of tug. [Music] [Music] Uh, so I’m not really heavy on the feel to be honest. It feels a little heavy. That’s the five layers and all that. But look, as far as spin and rotation and tug, uh, yeah. Uh, really healthy. I mean, I would call that 70 to 75%. Uh, every time I hit the ball, it’s jumping. It’s doing something. There’s there’s so much tug. Even when I mis hit the ball and I blade it, even though the rotation’s not there and it doesn’t stop, it still tugs. So, whatever the coating is on the outside, it just it just naturally grips the green. That’s That’s excellent. Now, let’s move on to the X. Oh, yeah. So, not really that heavy. Oh, beautiful. Beautiful checkup. Not really that heavy, but just uh I would say, you know, clickier. It’s louder. It’s clickier. It’s all on the borderline of obnoxious, but some of you like that click, so actually it wouldn’t bother you at all. Come back a little bit here and let’s really just try to get these in the hole. Oh, beautiful. Yeah, very nice check up there. I don’t know if it has quite as much tug and grip and spin as the regular TP5. I’m going to try to hit one really pure and just see low spinner. Oh, it’s still excellent. I do think it’s just a smidge less than the regular TP5, but not by a lot. I mean, maybe we’re talking 6570 compared to 70 75, but both of those golf balls check up really, really well. Um, I’m not a big fan of the sound and feel of them and stuff, but if you can get past that, yes, excellent checkup, excellent consistency, very fun to bend and and work around here. That’s that’s cool. Oh, that’s just sweet butter. Oh my goodness. And that’s why Yeah. So light, so soft, so easy to come off the putter. Perfect five out of five roll. Crispy, buttery. Wow. Yeah, that’s I I’ve never had a problem putting that golf ball. Um I don’t need to say anymore. It’s It’s a five out of five. Okay. Not as clean, not as smooth, but that’s okay. Still pretty good. Yeah, a little bit of chug. Little bit of chug on the X. Uh, let me run it back cuz I didn’t see that with the regular. It’s really solid. Um, I’m going to go ahead and give the the X the five out of five. It’s more like a four out of five, like a four and a half out of five. I don’t do halves this year, so I am going to go ahead and give bump it up, but it’s night and day. Uh, it’s a little heavier coming off the putter just a little bit. I don’t know that I’ve putted a better ball than that TP5 this year as far as feel, how it comes off, the easiness of it, how buttery it is. Um, now keep in mind I’ve tested 110 golf balls, so who knows? Uh, but it’s it’s got to be top three or top five or something. I mean, it’s just that’s amazing. That’s why sometimes on scramble groups I’ll bring it out. All right, so now we have our traditional classic blade putter. Let’s see if this changes it up at all. Oh, no. Still excellent. Yeah, still beautiful. Great roll. Not as good of a rolls with the mallet, but darn close. Oh, I just love that. I could do that all day. Wow. Yeah, I don’t need to say anything again. It’s just it’s it’s so good. Uh the sound obviously is a little bit more because of this putter, but wow. That’s what a tour ball should feel like. Oh, excellent. Not excellent. Get in that hole. Yeah, I I like the X model with the blade better than I do the mallet. Um, they’re all excellent. They’re all well above average. That’s incredible. That’s how I would expect it to feel. It is so soft and buttery coming off the putter. Um, like I said, during scrambles, I’ve always kept one like that has a cool design like from a college or something, and I’ll usually putt with it, you know? I just Yeah, that that’s that’s really nice. All right, starting with the TP5. Little sound and feel. Let’s see how these go. There’s definitely a firmness to it. Um, it’s it’s a little heavier. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it explodes off the club just fine, but it does feel firm. It does feel a little heavy. You know, keep in mind, these are game improvement irons, so if you have a blade or a forge club, it might feel different. Uh, but for me, I it it’s firm. I mean, it really feels like I got to hit it pure. Oh, wow. Okay. Um, so look, three out of five on pur. Some of you may like it. Like I said, it could depend on the club. What I’m working with here, three out of five for pure is the best I can do. The five layers, it’s just too firm. It doesn’t explode and have that crispiness like I would really hope for. Um, but that’s kind of subjective. When it comes to mishit feel, I cannot remember the last time the club turned in my hand from an iron shot. One out of five on mit feel. I mean, if you mishit this thing, it definitely lets you know. It has no issue. Takes you out in the alley, beats you up, goes home, puts your robe on, makes it with your I I can’t even. And now what’s even more hilarious is we’re moving on to the firmer version. So, yeah, we’ll see how this goes. Oh my gosh. Uh yeah, it’s it’s just so heavy. It’s so heavy. It’s so firm. Um [Music] I mean, if I really put a lot of extra juice on it and I swing about 95 96 opposed to my 84 I normally do, it feels a lot better. But from an average swing perspective, it feels heavy. It feels u I mean again the explosiveness isn’t a problem. It doesn’t feel like it’s coming off the club slow. It It just stings. It kind of hurts my hand. I kind of wish I had two gloves on right now. So uh let me do a mishit with this one. I’m going to need you all to pray for me. That’s all there is to it because I I can’t imagine how this mit’s going to hurt. All right, let’s go. Yeah, about how I thought to be honest with you. Three out of five is the best I can do for both. Uh, you know, 2 and 1/2 is what the TP5X would be, but I’ll bump it up to the three cuz the halves we don’t do. But I mean, mis hits on both are one. I mean, these throughout the whole golf ball spectrum this year I’ve tested, this is the firmst on a mis hit I have felt all year by far. All right, let’s talk some data. Let’s start with 50 yard pitch, backspin RPM. As always, looking at these two golf balls, Tailor Made TP5, 8,42, 8,387. Both of those numbers are well above average. Both of those numbers are excellent, and they’re only 15 RPM apart. That’s actually really cool. Um, both golf balls are going to do what you need to do. You know, you don’t have to sacrifice performance one for the other. Look at the launch angle. 28 compared to 27.2. Both those are relatively close. Um, yeah, I mean, that’s great. Both of them launched a little lower than my average and both of them spin a lot which is great. I’d say they’re probably in the top 25 30 this year for spin which is nothing to shake a stick at for sure. Then we get into pitching wedge. If we look at these numbers 126.5 on the distance for the TP5 is just incredible. I wasn’t expecting that at all. 123.9 is still really good with the X model. It’s still above average. We look at ball speed 98.5 compared to 97.2. Excellent. Both of those are well above my average and the 98.5 is incredible. I haven’t seen that much this year. Uh spin number is actually pretty close. They’re only about like what 55 apart from each other. I mean that’s that’s not bad at all. I wish they’d kind of separated themselves a little bit. Uh 1.25 1.24 and then launch angles are basically the same. Uh you know I I so I’ve seen that a couple times. I I think what that could be and I’m not 100%. I’ve kind of had some discussions with some of you in the comments to try to figure that out. I think that what that is is that I’m not compressing the X model 100%. I’m not getting the most out of it because it is for such a fast swinger. I think I’m getting most of it, which most of it, as you can see, works. Most of it still gets you good numbers. But I think if someone came along and they were like 115 mph swinger and they had like a a Vokey wedge or something, instead of just like a pitching wedge, they had like a proprietary wedge. I think if they hit these golf balls and did the same test, I think there would be a little more separation. How the separation would go, I don’t know. But for now, it’s pretty close. But these numbers are above average. So, let’s get into the seven iron now. Maybe the seven iron will separate a little bit more since I’m swinging faster and it’s a mid iron. Let’s see what we’re working with here. If we look at ball speed to start off, and as you can see, yes, now there’s a clear difference. 118.5 on the TP5, 115.9 on the TP5X. We go to distance, 167.1 compared to 168.5. Uh 161.8, 8 162.9 I lost about 6 to 7 yards compared to the two models. I’ll talk more about that in just a second. 5,624 compared to 5,792. Both of those are high spinning numbers. Again, very close, but the X model does have a little bit more spin. 1.4 1.38, both of those are pretty solid. The 1.4 is excellent. 17.7. So, a lower launch again with the TP5 and a high launch, actually a very high launch with the TP5X. So, that’s actually pretty surprising with that high launch. I wasn’t expecting it. Um, so, okay, we we get our separation now, right? And it’s interesting cuz I thought swinging faster the TP5X would respond a little better, but here’s where we ran into the issue. Once you get to mid irons, that’s where the forgiveness on a golf ball really starts to come into play. Pitching wedge, it’s not as bad because pitching wedge is a pretty forgiving club regardless of what you have because of the loft. You know, the more loft you have, the more forgiving the club is. It’s going to go relatively more straight. Have you ever tried to hook a pitching wedge? It’s very difficult. I mean, it can be done, don’t get me wrong, but it’s very difficult. You’d have to either be really, really bad or really, really good like Bubba. Other than that, it’s hard to do. So, my point is that once you get to the mid irons, it’s really easy to bend a mid iron. If you ever tried to hit a four iron, it’s really easy to draw a hook or slice it because the loft’s taken off of it. So, seven irons here. Long story short, the the unforgiveness of the TP5X really started to come into play here. If I hit it smooth, yeah, 167, 168, 170, 173, even some really solid numbers. But any slight mis hit off the center, even just slightly off the center, 150, 155, 152. And when you add all that up, it’s about 161. That’s the average. And so what I would say is this golf ball necessarily isn’t bad because of its ceiling. Its ceiling’s high, but if you’re an average golfer, I just you got to stay away because if you even if you’re not someone who purely strikes the ball six, seven out of 10 times, it’s going to be rough. You’re going to be short of the green a lot. And that’s just that’s just my opinion based on my experience with it. Now TP5 on a pretty good roll. I like those numbers a lot. really healthy spin, amazing ball speed, incredible um total distance, uh 5 yards from my average. If the TP5 does really well with the driver, this is a really strong showing from a to ball that in past I just haven’t had much respect for. So, that might be changing. Let’s see. Let’s get into the driver now and look at these numbers. And there it is. Yeah, absolutely. 146.3 compared to 146.1. I love to see that. If we look at total distance, we have 235.7 compared to 238.1. Uh total roll out on distance is incredible and it’s very close to both of them. That means that the TP5 probably had more spin or it launched higher. Let’s see. A little bit more spin, but no, again, they’re relatively close. And both of those numbers are below average. Both of those are in the green. 1.49 1.50. That’s an incredible showing with the driver. And there it is on the launch angle. I knew it had to be one of the two. 14.3 compared to 15.6. I like the launch angle, I think, of the X a little more on that, but it’s hard to argue with the end results of the TP5 because the TP5 was right there with it. Um, wow. Okay. Uh, excellent driver performance. I think TP5 really kind of swept the performance here. I mean, not not against the TP5X, but I mean, just swept as far as I’m trying to in my mind think of a negative so far. And it’s funny being a value guy, all I can think about is the price, but no, I mean, so far it’s it’s been excellent. So, that’s good to see. All right, let’s get into accuracy and dispersion. Let’s go to the computer and let’s look at that and let’s see how those are. See if there’s any red flags. Okay, starting with the TP5. When we look at accuracy, pretty good for the most part. Uh 50-yard pitch, pitching wedge. Pitching wedge actually looks great. If you just look at the accuracy portion of it, uh when we get to seven iron, you know, it kind of starts to spray all over, but you know, tour balls, especially of the five piece variety, if you know what I mean, they tend to kind of bend left and right. And as you can see, I’m not the most accurate. Uh so average golfers might beware on that. Then if you look at drivers, same thing. It all it all looks pretty consistent, but if you actually take the farthest left and the farthest right, it’s like 25 yards apart. So, um look, it’s not bad. It’s definitely on the average side, but you got to remember these tour balls like this. This is why I always recommend most average golfers not play tor balls because when you hit them correctly, oh baby. I mean, they are on the money. But if you slightly misit them, you could be way left, way right. And I think that kind of shows some of here. Wondering about the TP5. We’ll move on. And yeah, if we look here at the TP5X, it’s actually the opposite, which is kind of interesting. But you got to remember I take the six worst shots of each club and remove them and I only take the 10 best. And so the reality is the TP5X when hit correctly is on the money. It is extremely accurate and extremely consistent. However, when you mishit it, you lose some distance. You actually lose quite a bit of distance. Whereas the regular TP5 is the opposite. If you mishit it, you really don’t lose much distance per se, but the ball bends left and right a lot more. At least in my finding. All right, real quick. Let’s touch on durability and then I’ll give you my closing thoughts. We’re going to start with the TP5 first. As you can see, I do still have the Pix model. That’s what I tested. Looking at it, you know, most of the golf ball looks really good. As far as the paint goes, the paint is all intact. There’s no fading there. I mean, I don’t know what paint they’re using, but uh keep using it. It’s excellent. If we look at the actual golf ball itself, though, I do see a couple cuts. I see some, you know, nicks. Um yeah, there’s there’s some rough edges for sure. There’s some slits in this golf ball that are pretty bad. Um, you know, overall this is with like 80 to 85 shots. So, I think it gets you through the round. I think it’s a solid like 8 out of 10. Um, you know, I I expect a lot because of that price point and for the most part it’s pretty good, but I will admit at this point I don’t know if I could play it because these deep cuts will affect the ball flight and they will affect putting. Next up, we have the TP5X. And looking at this one, um, you know, this is still really good. Now, there is some paint missing from this one, but again, I don’t really care about the paint. It’s just something that’s cosmetic. If I feel this golf ball all the way around, it’s really solid. There is a couple little tiny rough patches. It This is a slightly better performance than the previous. So, I’m going to give it a eight and a half, which gets bumped up to a nine cuz I don’t do halves this year. So, nine out of 10. Definitely solid. Both of those pass. Uh not perfect by any means, but they will get you through a round if not a little more. And I think slower, well, slower swingers probably shouldn’t be playing the X, but slower swingers, if you are playing this golf ball, you might get two to two and a half rounds out of it for sure. All right, so final thoughts. You know, Tailor Made has now had 2 years with this specific model in production to get all the tees crossed, all the eyes dotted, all the, you know, screws tightened. And I think they’ve done a wonderful job. Uh, they really have. This is a golf ball that never really had my respect. And uh even though last year when I tested it I was impressed and I said it’s the best TP5 yet. Um still just wasn’t completely sold on it. And now here we are a year later from that. You know now there’s you know I’m sure I’m sure at this point they’ve got the production just sound to a tea. Um I think we’re going to get a new model next year obviously if it’s every two years like it usually is. So we’ll test a new one next year. I got to say though I’m really impressed. A lot of you have come forward this year and told me that you’ve had really good luck with the TP5. And I can see that uh there’s not a lot of negatives. If you’re someone who is a mid to fast swinger and you’re looking for a really good tour ball that gives you an edge, if you’re a single digit handicap, uh this is a golf ball that there’s not a lot of weaknesses um other than the price, but that’s kind of subjective, right? Because for me, being a value guy and kind of still being in that mid-range where I need a two-piece or just a value three, for me it seems expensive and for a lot of you it will. But let’s be real. If you’re watching this channel and you are an advanced golfer and you’re looking for that competitive edge, this is now a golf ball that gets the respect and gets put up in that top tier, you know, with all the tour balls that bend left and right and that have really good consistency and gain distance and fine fairways and uh it might be a little too advanced for me all in all, but for a lot of you, you might really like it for sure. Now, when it comes to the X model, I look, it’s firm. I mean, there were some highlights here. Don’t get me wrong. I just don’t think anyone who’s a mid swinger or a slow swinger should play it. Unless I guess maybe if you’re a ball striker from, you know, God himself and you can do nine out of 10, 10 out of 10 just consistently in the middle of the face, that’d be fine. But there were so many times with the X model, whether it was seven iron, whether it was driver, I just would slightly hit it off center. I one time I hit it off the toe with a driver and it legit turned my hands and stung him and I actually threw the club because it stung the hand so bad. I I just think it’s for fast swingers. It’s just my opinion. I I just I think it’s so so firm. I think 115 would be like a sweet spot for it. But I’m pleasantly surprised that the TP5 responded so well for an average swing. These golf balls are consistent. These golf balls are well above average. I think they’re excellent. And if you fit into that category where you need one of them, you can now get two boxes for $95, which was a good call, Tailor Made, because Callaway was kind of beating you there for a minute. And that again, I don’t know who did that first, but anyway, doesn’t matter. Guys, as always, I hope you enjoyed this review. Keep watching to keep saving, keep learning. Until next time.

First🎉
I have never played them! I did game the Tour Response for a good while! Thanks Nick
TP5 is my current ball. I think it’s a better ball than the prov1 and I know that’s a hot take. I was surprised how firm you found the ball to be now granted I game the TaylorMade QI irons and on miss hits sometimes this ball feels heavy but I find it to be a very crisp
Tour response is a great ball for average golfers
The silence says it all green side, def a around the green and short pitch shots still for me. I just don’t swing it fast enough outside of 100. So nothing has changed with it. I love the spin on chips and putting
As a TP5/TP5x lover I will tell you the goods:
1) it is the best short game ball ever made bar none. Paired with an insert mallet it has to be the best feeling ball ive ever touched and the grab off the wedge is insane
2) it ABSOLUTELY is down to the material with iron feel. I play forged iron heads and it is so buttery you wouldnt believe the difference
3) you need more speed to use all 5 layers but if you can get 105+ driver speed there is just no better ball on the market
4) the durability is absolutely fantastic. You can grind it with a sander and still get spin on it
Love the channel! I’ve been around for a while. What happened to the battle of the soft balls? I’m really curious as I use the super soft, the speedsoft ink and the maxfli softfli. Really trying to see which of these is the best performer
You’ve not suffered mishitting a ball unless you grew up playing Winter golf in Scotland on a frosty day with minus temperatures, playing blades with 100 compression wound golf balls! Trust me you cried twice, once from the sting in your hands and once from finding the ball has a smile on it after the shot! Especially when you were a hard up secondary (high) school pupil!
I had always been told that TaylorMade’s naming conventions are the opposite of all other major manufacturers. Meaning:
TP5 = Pro V1X
TP5X = Pro V1
Is that true?
Good stuff Nick ! Definitely a ball for the better player & a player who isn’t concerned about spending big bucks !
I might have to snag the pirate ones
I don't like TP5 because for me it spins too much – not needed for irons and lose distance on drivers. With that said, I have always loved how soft they feel. I just find it hard to believe you found them too hard or harsh.
Tp5x is a great great ball
Those just sounded and looked so great on the putting and chipping mat.
Another great review.
I agree the performance of the tp5/x depnds on speed, but I don't think the ball is good enough when there are better balls at a lower cost. MGS has also talked about how the ball still isn't very good when compared to other tour balls.
Taylormade knows their loyalists. I am impressed with the way they hook onto a set of golfers and keep them coming back. Only Callaway, Titleiest, and Taylormade have that level of dedicated consumer base. The TP5 crowd will only game TP5.
Excellent review Nick. The confidence in your processes really show themselves in the tour balls compared to how you review those a couple years ago. And you seem to be in a better mind space than a couple weeks ago. Fun to see you smile again
Too much curve on course and in sim
I’ve recently picked up a box of the TP5 and they feel fine to me Nick even on miss hits and I’m an average golfer.
Agree on how good the roll and feel on the green
Over priced balls. The difference between the TP6 and the TP5x is noticeable in my opinion, but might be placebo effect. In golf….the placebo effect is an oddly strong influencer. I use them…but I pay in the $30 ‘s for the misprint bulk balls. No difference in the balls and they are $20 less a dozen.
If you’ve not tried Arapo 5s balls you might want to check them out.
Nice review Nick, other balls are probably better for my game!!
I just had a demo box of 4 of the 2026 proto balls TP5/X and I was really surprised. I have never really played them in the past, but I loved these. What surprised me was how good the X was. I swing about the same speed as you but the X was great for me. Can't wait until they start shipping them.
I just found a nice TP5 on course today. Playing in mid 50’s temp. The ball was not much different then the TaylorMade speed soft I was playing except putting. The TP5 had the worst putter feel I have ever experienced. It was like putting a marshmallow in feel and sound. Maybe it had been water soaked sometime but it really looked good. I threw it into the practice area at the end of the round.
Looking forward to a chrome tour vs TP5 comparison
I used TP5x in Melbourne in 2022 into 2023 with a 70mph (7iron) swing speed…not a problem. Then I bought a new dozen and went to Thailand in the hottest month and they would not launch at all. I went through the full dozen in about 3 rounds. Completed my holiday with Tour Response Stripe and hit my best round in decades. Haven't looked back.
One thing I have learned recently, is people love the ball they love. I hope that people don’t just constantly poo-poo on the ball people play like it’s a sports team. I encourage everyone is look at these reviews objectively and let people play something that they love even if it’s not statistically “the best.” Cheers! 🎉
Another good test Nick. Got to agree with you, not really for us average golfers. But still a good ball for some of us.
When are you doing attomax at $250 a dozen. Lol. Yes $250
TP5's will punish the f outta you on slight mishits. I was watchm this vid (wife on her phone) and i predicted (to her) your response to how it feels on mishits.
