Adidas have brought back another retro design — the CourseCup Spikeless Golf Shoes — inspired by their classic 80s silhouette. But do they just look the part, or can they actually perform out on the course?
In this video, I give you my honest, hands-on review after a full round in them.
I’ll cover:
⛳ Design & styling (and whether you can actually pull them off)
👟 Fit, sizing & comfort (including some early heel rubbing issues)
🏌️♂️ On-course performance — grip, stability, and traction
🔥 And a strong alternative you need to check out — the Adidas MC 80 Spikeless, which might just be the better buy.
If you’re thinking about grabbing the CourseCups, watch this first.

You’ve probably noticed that a lot of brands are bringing back some of their old school golf designs. A few weeks ago, Adidas dropped the course cup, an update to their 1980s classic. But I wondered, do they actually feel and perform like a modern golf shoe or like a pair of outdated ones? So, I bought a pair, played some rounds in them, and I’ve got some thoughts. Because if Adidas nailed the look of these shoes and the comfort and the performance, well, these could be some of the best retro releases yet and possibly better than their own MC80s. Let’s find out. So, let’s start with the design. And I’d love to know what you think of the looks. I think these could either look amazing or they could kind of look ridiculous. There’s lots of classic styling details mixed in with the full leather upper and that classic C cup silhouette. But here’s the thing. If you don’t have the wardrobe choices to style these shoes, well, you might struggle to wear them all that often. It’s odd because they’re technically a trainer, but in my opinion, they look much better with a more formal outfit, especially in this brown colorway. They’ve got that retro charm about them if you dress them up a little. Sizing wise, I found they run a little bit small like most Adidash shoes tend to do. So, I’d definitely recommend going up half a size. There’s a nice amount of room in the toes, which is good and actually quite surprising for Adidas cuz they’re normally a little bit more on the cramped side, but these aren’t necessarily the most secure around the ankle. I actually considered using the extra holes to tie these shoes in an ankle lock so I’d get a little bit more security from them. I kind of felt that my foot was kind of moving quite a bit at the top of the shoe. Now, underfoot, these shoes are pretty firm. They’re not uncomfortable, but I wouldn’t say that you’re walking on clouds either. There’s no boost or light strike foam going on in these shoes. Just a pretty standard rubber cup outsole. There’s not a huge amount of padding around the heel and the ankle either, and it’s really quite stiff. The first time I walked the course in these shoes, they definitely rubbed on my heel a little bit. So, you might want to make sure that you pack a few spare plasters in your bag before heading out on the course. And the leather on this upper, well, it isn’t the softest. I mean, they feel soft enough. And these are only 109 here in the UK, so I’m not going to hold that against them. I’m not really expecting too much there. I do suspect that these shoes will break in over time. They’re going to kind of need to because there’s not a huge amount of padding. It’s a mixture of these larger nubs on the outside and then these smaller claws in the grip more insert. and they work really well out on the course. Now, when you combine this outsole with the cup design that isn’t necessarily the softest with that upper as well, you actually get a pretty stable golf shoe for your swing. Now, they’re not packed with fancy tech to maximize the energy transfer, but unless that really matters to you, you’re probably going to be absolutely fine playing around a golf in these. I did my usual waterproof test, pouring 300 ml of water over the upper and the bottom of the tongue and laces. And as you can see here, the upper was absolutely fine, but a fair amount of water did go through the laces. So, I would say that these are waterproof, but they could let in some water on a particularly wet day. So, in summary, if you like the look of these shoes, I think they could be worth your money, but they’re just not the softest feeling shoes available, both in terms of underfoot as well as around the heel and the ankle. And while they’ll be fine for most golfers out on the course, you’re not getting a huge amount of stability from them. Now, if you do want to grab a pair, I’ve included any of my affiliate links in the pin comments below. And if you haven’t already, you’re probably going to want to check out the Adidas MC80 spikeless golf shoes. Now, they’ve been out for a little while now, so you’ll probably be able to pick them up for a pretty good price in the sales. Not far off what you pay for these. And to be honest, I’d prefer to wear them over these. That’s mainly down to comfort. The boost midsole on those shoes is incredibly comfortable. They’re like walking on clouds while still keeping that traditional golf style look that you’re getting from the upper of these. Love the look of them but can't believe they didn't put the boost inner sole in them, so just for that reason I wouldn't buy them.
Great honest review as usual thanks.

The MC80 is a fanstastic shoe! I hope they update them at some point.
