SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) -We have a brand new golf course in Sioux Falls that just opened on Labor Day.
Mapleton Golf Club is a private golf club. And there’s no doubt, that members and their guests will enjoy an amazing round of golf every time they step on to the property to tee it up.
And that was the goal of Danny Amundson, the guy who’s idea it was to create this environment.
Danny Amundson, Mapleton GC Founder says, “We want it to feel like a fun, laid back atmosphere that they’re here to enjoy golf, food and beverage with friends from here or from other places.”
Mission accomplished Danny. Mapleton Golf Club couldn’t be more relaxing with the breath-taking layout of 18 challenging but scenic holes. Kind of like a couple of major projects his dad Mark Amundson was involved with like Sutton Bay.
Danny says, “Definitely part of it. Golf’s been in my blood since I was a little kid. I watched Sutton Bay get built, I watched my Dad help build The Prairie Club with Paul Schock down in Valentine. So it’s kind of been part of my DNA.”
I know Mark would be very proud of this project spear-headed by Danny. And the fact that it’s on the Northeast edge of Sioux Falls makes it more amazing. Scott Hoffman was hired as the designer and he clearly enjoyed working with this property.
Danny says, “His goal was to make every hole unique and try not to repeat kind of the look on every hole. I think he’s accomplished that and I’ve heard that commentary from a lot of people to where every hole kind of stands on it’s own and after you’ve played just 2 or 3 rounds out here, you have no problem remembering each of the 18 holes.”
And much like Sutton Bay, there are numerous signature holes. Although Danny and I agreed that #7, which is a par 5 is at the top of our list. And we birdie it together which helps!
The more you play Mapleton the more you appreciate the variety of holes. But for Danny, he’s still in awe of how it turned out.
Danny says, “I could have never dreamed that this would be the end result, having seen what it looked like as raw land. The amount of transformation, I mean we moved 500 thousand cubic yards of dirt during the shaping process to build the golf course.”
This magnificent layout will only get better with time as it matures. But much like Danny, I couldn’t have imagined it would be this good this quickly.
