Ricky Fowler has been a dream guest of mine since starting YouTube. Today, he joins us on the five under challenge. I just want to say thank you guys so much for watching the videos and making this all possible. It still doesn’t make sense to me that I get to do this for a living. I just want to take a moment to thank you guys. Let’s get right into it. So, is five shots. Is that a good number? Is that okay with you? It’ll it’ll have to be okay for today. Yeah, it’s going to be a tough task. First competitive round in two and a half months. You’ve been hurt, right? Shoulder stuff. I had some shoulder issues all all year. Uhhuh. Luckily played good enough to earn some time off. Yeah. I only hit balls a few times and then I’ve probably played about six rounds now. Wow. Still a little slow. So at least you have excuses like I mean I usually No, no excuses. This is just the I’m in peak offse form, right? This is really cool for me today, guys, cuz this is the first time this course has really been on camera much. And this is my home course, Tquesta. So, huge shout out to Tquesta Country Club for having Ricky and I out today. Ricky’s a member here as well, but I’m excited today. This is going to be good. This I mean, I got no excuse. I know this course so well. It’s where I play almost every day. I only brought one ball. So, all day. Well, for the tea here. Okay. All day. We’ll see if this is hitting until you’re happy. About to be playing tailor made. Oh, yeah. I can make it to that bunker. Yeah. Sit. Bunker maybe. Yeah. Yeah. Perfect would be just right of it. All right. Good thing out here it’s it’s hitable. I love bunker shots. It’s all right. Let’s explore some new places today at Sequesta. Well, we’re also seeing this isn’t the normal wind as you know, right? Typically, this is down off the left and we have it in off the right today. Right. Like I I know it’s it’s it’s windy today. I just don’t necessarily know the direction that it’s coming from. That’s probably an issue. Yeah. I would say there’s a lot of guys that do know it and then some that don’t even pay attention zero clue and just rely on someone telling them. So maybe like a DJ might not really care too much. DJ goes with the flow. Yeah. Little skinny sit. Nice shot. I like that. Out was goal number one. I feel like with those fairway bunker shots, it’s so nice to catch them a little thin than fat. Like that’s such a Oh, yeah. Like I when you hit one of those a little heavy, that’s the worst. It’s always that short and left. Yep. Get this up and down. Set the tone. Actually kind of a tricky shot here to get this one to stop in time. It’s going to come out pretty hot out of this lie. See if we can get this up and down. We got our five shot lead right now. Yeah, good one. It’s pretty good. Great shot. Thank you. Are we Are we giving putts today or is it What are the rules? You got to put it all out, Ricky. Okay. I was going to I was going to give it to you. One thing you’re just getting thrown right into a tournament on the off season softly. Okay. I’d only hit sixfooters prior to this. Grant, he’s got the doors stop, dude. Yeah, he does. Ricky’s got the doors stop. That’s what we call that one. Good pot. Rock solid. That little hover going too. Get your heart rate up there. Yeah, we’re just getting some blood flow. Okay. Nice. Those are some grindy pars on the first hole. I love that little hover you do before you go off. I don’t think I could do that. Oh my. That’s it. It takes a little time to get comfortable with. Yeah. Are you like one of the only people that does that little hover or is that just I think there’s there’s some guys that kind of do it without necessarily noticing cuz obviously you can’t start the putter back without doing something whether it’s picking it up forward press. Yeah. Like a little trigger to go Yeah. Cuz obviously if it sold, you know, unless you had like super fast dry greens, you could kind of get the slide. spent a lot of time with Paul down at Scotty Cameron studio and so we would always mess with stuff or or kind of see how we could make things better. Yeah. And I was like shoot what we try hovering it to see if take a bet cleaner and it just went like perfect. Yeah. Slight dog leg to the left. Good hole. Um back plate here is 445. Normally this would be off the left to helping off the left. We mentioned this complete opposite wind than we’re used to. Typically, we’re east to southeast. Today, we’re we’re northwest. So, I think it makes the drive easier. Um, but the hole is going to play a little longer. This is a This is a tough hole. This is one of the It’s just a little bit longer. Yeah. Pretty pretty simple. I mean, not much. Just straight away. And Yep. That’s what we hope for. Nice. Yeah, he’s swinging good. That time off was what you needed. Hey, what? However, whatever gets it in the fairway. Oh, shoot. All right. What’s over there? Some trees, some sand, pine straw. Yeah, I think we’re okay. That’s the swing right there. That really hurts me. That club got behind me. Yeah. Trying to draw it. Yeah, I was trying to draw that and I, you know, I’m I’m feeling it come from the inside and I was late on it. Mhm. Uh, but yeah, that’s the swing right there. That can really just come at the wrong time. Yeah, I feel like I mean, especi mainly is they’re tough to draw, right? Like that nice draw. Obviously, you could you can force it, right? It is tough to draw a club called these days. Yeah, totally agree. They’re much more fade bias. Yeah. Um, so I think that’s something I’ve been working on with Cobra as well and trying to get, you know, like see me playing the mini and I feel like when everything’s zeroed out, it’s really straight to slightly falls left. Mhm. Yeah. I feel like I used to hit a big draw. Now I struggle to draw and I think it’s cuz I play a stiffer shaft. But when I first started YouTube, I was hitting this huge draw. You can sling it if you want. Sing it. And I can’t sling it anymore. Like I’m I’m in my mind right there. Right there. That was like I was thinking to myself like I’m going to sling that and yeah starts right doesn’t even fade. I think we’ll start to see some some good stuff. What’d you get there? 208. I am experiencing places at my home course that I’ve never never been over here either. Scott, that’s just the good old nerves of the camera. Ricky’s an intimidating guy. So just a a huge presence. Yeah, huge presence. All right, 208. We do have a shot though. We just got to keep it under that. That’s That’s very That’s very low. Like very low. You got to roll it up. I think I got that though, right? Yeah. Just roll it up, please. Yeah. We’re gonna go like low stinger. 200 28 yards. It’s what Wesley told me. You got to like really dig your feet. That’s the biggest thing. Here we go. Not hit that good. Fortunately, I am Good spot to be. Feel like I hit something under there. That was like really hard. Yeah, those So those first two holes I’ve played out here like coming up on like a hundred times and I’ve never been where I was in that hole in that hole. That’s the beauty about golf though. Yeah. I almost think like I’ve had I’ve played some qualifiers or events at a course that know well Mhm. And sometimes it’s almost worse when you know it. Yeah. Cuz your expectation and like you said like I I’ve never been here before. Yeah. And you’re like I’m supposed to hit it here. It’s like so it’s a weird expectation thing. 100%. I think that’s what it is. If you played somewhere like you played one practice round and then played it. Yeah. You don’t really know it that well. No. You just know, okay, I’m supposed to hit it here, right? You know there the expectations a lot lower. Not sure what I want to do here yet. So 62 hole back pin. I don’t want to hit it long. And we’re in off the right. I’m going to hit eight iron. So that I’m just trying to take that long out of play. Oh, nice flare. Coming back. It’s on the green, but it’s short. Whoa. Just kidding. That is You caught a flyer. It should have been hurt, so it shouldn’t have flown there. That’s That’s fine. But Oh man, I did not expect it to go there. It’s probably pin high just over that ridge. Yeah, this feels weird. Sky playing my home course today. And like like Ricky said, I just have this like expectation on where I need to hit each shot. And I know it so well that there’s just like a little bit more pressure to like, hey, you need to hit this Farah. You’ve done this a million times. And so I think right now we got to learn that that’s not working. Oh no. Pulled it. Good one. Okay. Acceptable. Acceptable for sure. Left myself with a downhill putt, though. Um, shoot. Come back. Okay. Down the hill, left to right. This will be a big one to make. Um, we have just played so unbelievably scrapping. I mean, it’s only been two holes, so yeah, let’s let’s let’s hit some fairways and greens after this. Nice. Good putt. Thank you. It’s going to be one of those days, Sky. I can already feel it. Good putt, dude. You’re a rock sol. You’re walking those in. I don’t think I’ve ever walked in a putt in my life. I just closed my eyes. No, I’m kidding. There’s some guys that close. Nice. this whole downwind. Yeah, that is nice. Par five. We can reach this one in two. Let’s hit a good drive here. Start with a fairway. Yep. Short grass. Yeah, that should be really good. Yeah, that’s about as good as I got right there. That is my perfect line. Yeah, the cover at it wasn’t much over 200. Yeah. What is it? So, the front right of the hole, I’m getting like 202 in that UPS slope. So you obvious you want it to come down left of it there. That section. Oh yeah, that was really good. I think that’s got to sit. Just crapped in the back bunker. You hit it too good, boy. Yeah. Sometimes I shock myself. I might have to see if Brian has a battery. I’m starting to see the battery sign on there. Oh, dude. That’s not good. Yeah, cuz I just lost my rangefinder. I feel they last for the batteries last forever in those things. So, you don’t really like Right. in the staff. And when you do need the batteries though, well, I always obviously I have my home bag right now. Staff bag. I always have a battery in there. Yeah. But they’re hard to find. They’re like a weird battery. The rangefinder batteries. Uh 80 something. But going to try and get eight iron up in there. Let it ride a little. That looks I mean because of the number stay there’s a little ridge there. Yeah. All right. It’s going down the ridge, but that’s fine. Dude, I’ll tell you what, you practiced like sixfooters on the putting green and you’ve only had I mean this one’s this is going to be your longest test yet. You know what video I loved of you was uh the golf boys. Ricky Barnes. How do Whose idea was that to come together and make that song? A few of us were out at dinner and Bubba and Ben were two of those people. Yeah. I don’t know how that came about. Like boy band and whatnot. And then Hunter got thrown into the mix. Hunter Mayhem, if you know that name. And then the fact that we did a golf 2. I’m not sure what we’re thinking. That was the end of my music career. Yeah. Yeah. I’m not musically talented. I can’t dance. Obviously, you can see from those videos. That’s Dude, you Hey, you were a YouTuber before YouTubers were a thing. It’s part of life, though. It’s like have fun. Don’t care what other people think. Life’s about having fun. Like that that video came out when like before YouTube golf was ever even like a thought. That’s like a 10-year-old video. All right, another first. Never been in this bunker. All right, big shot here. Par five and two. Hit it. Boy, I like that, too. All right, you got the read. Yeah, I did get the read there. That’s what Tiger would do in his prime. You would see him. The ball would be going past the hole and he’d be like over here like looking at it go past the hole. Big difference between me and Tiger. A lot of similarities. Yeah, a lot of similarities. I’d say the only difference is we don’t watch the ball going past the hole. Oh, it did go right. Good speed, though. All right, stressfree birdie. Those are the ones where you’re like, “Okay, I want to hit a good putt.” You obviously want to try and make it, but like don’t be the idiot who blows it by or leaves it way short. You three putt and you lose a chance of just an easy birdie. 100%. There’s always that like pull. Oh no. Just didn’t go much early. Yeah. Didn’t take the break. All right, it’s par. Ricky gains a shot there. Four shot lead. Dang it, man. That one, that one stinks. I want a birdie there. We have got a par4. This is our fourth hole of the day. Part of the combo T9. Yeah, combo T. Playing this one up a little bit. Yeah. Yeah. All right. You’re hitting that driver great. That’s first time on course. Really? Yeah. Oh, you told Yeah. That this is your first time ever hitting on course? Yes. Looking pretty good so far. Pretty nice. Yeah. Should be good. Going to carry it all. That corner right there. Yeah. Oh, like plugged. You got some back spin on this one. Wow. 147. Okay. Yesterday I was hitting balls on the range here getting ready and I hit a million punch shots with this club right here. My grooves are so dirty. Little punch shot here. Hang. Hang. No. Bunker boy. Tell you what, I’m getting in some bunker practice right now. Short game clinic today. Yeah. It was nice and shallow for a punch shot though. It was like It was Most people get a little steep and diggy like myself. Yeah. I like to go left though. I always like it’s hard for me to not pull up on shot. All right, 134. Gonna try and fight. Well, maybe not with that gust. I was thinking I was going to be able to fight a nine iron against it, but we’ll go ahead and try. Yeah. Yeah. Nice shot, Ricky. Swinging nice, man. Look in control right now. I just tried I was just trying to stay shallow like you. You were real shallow there. Get a little little steep with nine and I was going to be 15 yards shallow. I know. That’s when it like spins up into the It’s so interesting playing here in Florida all the time. It’s so windy and you got you got to really fly your ball down like you got to make sure it’s but you have to do it properly. Like you have to stay shallow. Like yours was good. It just got it was so straight in it just got on the side of it kept drifting. Right. But yeah, you have to do it properly where it’s not just low, but with the proper spin. Yep. Cuz you can hit it low, but if there’s too much spin, all of a sudden Yep. Go straight up in. It comes up 15 yards short. I bet I’m plugged. I would like to say that I am plugged. Oh boy. Yeah. Into this pin. This is This is something else. This one’s going to be tricky to get to stop. I think we can do it though. Oh, that was that’s illegal. Was illegal. It’s it’s legal in our match. I’ve never done that. There’s a lot of things you’ve never done today. Yeah, it comes out it comes out in editing. We got to edit out that divot. Bro just took a divot in the bunker as a practice swing. Yeah. No, I Yeah, completely unintentional. Well, you nowadays if you didn’t intend it, you’re fine, right? Yeah. I I I will wholeheartedly say right now I did not mean to do that. That was completely unintentional. I do know that the sand I don’t need any testing on it. I filmed a thousand bunker shots with you and I’ve never seen you do that. Yeah, it was completely unintentional. Okay, here we go. Nice. Thank you. Where’ it? It was the uh Thank you. Swing. Um Oh, I got it. Yeah, it’s in here. Thank you. So, do I take the penalty now? No. Okay, nice shot, Grant. Okay, let’s go, baby. I can’t believe that just went in. That That was large. That was a tough bunker shot. I was just trying to get that anywhere near the hole. Oh, let’s go. You got it pretty close. Yeah, as close as you can get it, girl. Oh, I don’t know how I saw. I actually thought you made that one. Oh, that one hurt. Yeah. I can’t believe we’re walking away right now and I just gained a shot. The odds on that one were pretty low. Um, that’s golf. That one hurt my brain there. like to go from like taking an accidental practice swing by hitting the sand and then to haul it out. It just like my brain’s still trying to process what just happened. So, I’ll get back to you guys on that one. Go a full just a full seven here. I want to let this ride the wind. That’s what I wanted right there. Looks good. Just passed it. Wow, that was one of the bigger seven irons of my life. The thing just went 200 yards. You got seven iron. I have eight. Thinking probably something around a 60 or just above 60 shot. Let it ride. Yeah, it’s going to be nice. Go a little blow. Nice shot. really good. See, that was beautiful. You played the wind perfect. Got it high, a lot of spin. That was nice. I’d hope after living down here for 15 years, I could get the wind somewhat close. Ricky’s got a good look. But I like the line on this a lot. I can really see this line here. Thought you might sneaky make that one. Oh, I mean I wasn’t hoping you would turn. No way. Stay right out there. Yeah, roll from here on it would just drift left. Wow. Oh my gosh. I mean, after the last hole, it kind of evens out. It does. It does. I know. I know. It sucks, but yeah, I’m back to everything’s all square on the golf course. Um, some of that’s like the perspective of it. Not saying right now, obviously it’s early, but this is a a non-s serious round, but sometimes you have to look back and be like, “Okay, well that happened, this happened. Okay, we’re net even.” Yeah, I’m even against the course. I was just kind of going through the motions there, not really even thinking. Um, I was actually in a great space in my head. All right, Ricky. All right, dog leg right. I really like this one. Straight to the right. Like we’ve mentioned a couple times, it’s like we’re playing, you talk about playing home course, but we’re also playing a wind that you very rarely see here. Yeah. So, it’s a having to think a little more cuz normally it’s like wind off the right and helping off the right. Now, it’s in off left. Changes some things. Yep. That’s not cutting. Oh, no. If that’s going to reach. Yeah, I think so. Short. Oh, just good. Nice shot. Perfect. Let that last puppy in the past and let’s move on now. New hole. Yeah, should be good. That was a good one there. There way. Little fade. Putts like that, they hit you right here, like in the hard a little bit. Yeah. Especially like when you like take your time and you’re like you’re you’re you’re doing everything right. Yeah. And you’re like, would I have been better off just going up and Right. I was thinking I was debating tapping that in with like, you know, the one foot until like then you miss one that you go to do that. You’re like, I should take more time. It’s always back and forth. Yeah, wind’s really not that bad. 125. Not too much wind here. It’s like a birdie sky. And what a roller coaster this round has been. The fact that we’re even par right now feels unbelievably crazy. Is that going to go in? Oh, yeah. Jot. Let’s see if we can get one closer than his. Similar number. Oh, hold your line. Nice shot. Just a little short. catch it. No. God, I thought it might try and just hold right at the end. When you have that good speed, sometimes the hole just I just thought just a little bit of Yeah, that way for the birdie sky. Little right to left. Good one. I was way too nervous over that. Yeah, dude. My heart’s beating so fast. Just a pillow fight back and forth, dude. No, I’m telling you, I’ve been really good on the short putts. That last one, it just it’s still lingering there. That’s the difference between you and I, Ricky, that I hold on to those short misses. Probably a little bit too long. I think we all do. Yeah. Tell you what, my heart’s being fast. What a round it’s been. Um, colorful for me. Very steady for Ricky. Just a big par guy. Yeah, you are. Today, you’re just like really like it’s solid golf. Par four dog leg to the right from back here. Should be fine. Should be all right there. Yeah, be fine. Too far left though. Yeah, that’s He’s going to have 150 yards less than me. That was perfect. That was real good. I did not know where the hole went and I was like that is out of bounds. Yeah. No, no, no. It goes straight right. It’s cool being a golf nerd like myself and watching you over the years change your golf swing cuz I remember I mean when I first got into golf I was like 13 14 years old. You were you were out there already and I remember you were like super you did this super flat. Yeah. Getting out. Yeah. It was like you you did like hands in club out to here. laid it off just like flat. It was like this whole really cool move. Obviously, you changed it since then. But that’s a big like sometimes when people make that big of a change, you just never know what’s going to happen. And I feel like you’ve made that change and you were like especially right when you were making the change, you were playing some great golf with Butch. Yeah, luckily it it uh it did happen pretty quickly where some some good golf. We started in 13 and then in 14 is when I finished top five in all four majors. Yeah. See if we can get it there. 96 of a pin should be center of the green right there. Yeah, good one. Thank you. That’s going to be a long putt. That is going to be a very long putt. Hold your line. Struck. So nice. Hold. Okay. just got riding it and yeah, good strike. Yeah, I didn’t want to hold it against it because the difference in, you know, when you get that wind off the right and you hold it and you hold it too much, it’s all of a sudden 12 yards short. Here we go. Up the hill left to right. Long one, Ricky. I got you. Yep. Good speed. Thank you. It’s pretty good, Skye. Our speed control is getting better. Grant used to have a loose screw where every like once around he would just hit a 5 foot or 15 feet past the hole and he’s kind of going away. Just get one flyer. I was catch flyers with this putter. I was catching flyers off the face. Nice. There we go. Dude, I was I was like, if you just keep scaring the hole this much, one of them has to fall. There we go. Gain one on me, Ricky. I’m six, you’re two. I got a lot of work to do. Four shots. We got some good golf we’re playing. This is fun. Yeah, this is one where So, we have like probably around 152 yards, but I might be hitting a sixiron and just punching it. Super low flighted shot. Oh, it’s flying just came out of it. Wow, it’s pin high, though. Just forgot the hold back into it part. The wind died right when you hit, too. Feel like there’s much freeze up there. I’m going to go with a seven. I don’t think you need anything more than a 60 shot. Yeah, 60 should be perfect. Hold it up right there. There. Get on the green. Right in between ours would have been good. Right there. Shoot. All right. Those are always tough putts cuz I know you’re feeling and seeing one thing there and then at the end it’s going the other way. So like getting yourself to play it low enough feels so weird. Hard to tell on camera. We’re in like a little that pin’s in like a little valley at the bottom of it, but no excuses. That drops me back now. Even on the day, five under total. Ricky’s two under, three shot lead. Ninth hole of the day, par4. I would say it’s one of the tougher holes on the course. Beauty. Should be just short. I I’m hoping today with that wind. Yep. Yep. Nice shot. What a beast of a hole. Oh no. I hate that. That should be fine though. Should be all right. Right in the sand. Yeah, probably just path right over there. PTSD right there. At least normally it’s off the right. So you can kind of like Yeah. Bank it off there. That was like if I put any cut spin on that. Yeah. I would say like this direction today is probably the hardest for this because if it gets moving left, it goes left. Right. If you cut it, it just kills it. Yeah, that’s such a It’s such a scary thing when you are nervous over a T-OT and the wind straight into you. Any spin you put on the ball is going to be exaggerated. Yeah. So, like you either have to pick like which way is it going to go and then you have to give it room, right? But this one, it doesn’t really give you much room to hit a cut cuz it’s just going to keep going to the water. Yeah. Some guy on our fastest round video, they said I run like a giraffe. Feel like a giraffe right now. Like my neck’s like right next to some Yeah, that tree is not in play for me. Wow. Hold it up. The left. Oh boy. Oh, it’s pushing. Stay there. Okay. All right. Oh, that’s a huge break. You got some grass. Nice. Uh, that is a really really big break for me cuz off of this stuff it is so difficult. Yeah, you would have been trying to like bump it. Couple hops on the rough. Oh, this is huge, guys. If we were on that coina there, it starts to get really tricky. We’re in a pretty standard position, I would say, for our five under series guy. I think for me having the mini in the bag has been big because you pull that out. Yeah. A lot of times like there in a tournament I might have hit mini. With wind off the left I like to hit mini cuz I can draw it. Yeah. So I can hold it in there better. Um, so that’s another thing that’s been nice on my end. But it just it blows my mind that someone like you is not playing blades, but yet there’s going to be somebody else out there that goes and gets an MV, you know? Yeah. I mean, I love I love the feel of blades, and these these feel comparable to that. I mean, you’re obviously not going to get the feel of a blade unless you’re playing a blade, right? But these still have that nice kind of soft but heavy hit in a way. Freeze you up a little bit. They’re not like, “Okay, I need to hit a dime. Now, now I’ve got a quarter I can hit.” These are still a small enough look, but they’re a little more forgiving. But, I don’t know. To each their own. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. It’s just interest.
