TOWN OF ULSTER, N.Y. — The Wiltwyck Golf Club is embarking on a nationwide search for a new head golf professional after deciding not to renew the contract of Trevor Alexander, who was the head pro at the Kingston semiprivate golf course for four golf seasons.

Alexander, a Maine native, came to Wiltwyck in April 2022 following a four-year stint as the general manager/director of golf at Medford Lakes (N.J.) Country Club.

Alexander previously had been an assistant pro at four New Jersey golf clubs, including the well-respected Forsgate Country Club and Metedeconk National Golf Club.

Alexander replaced former Wiltwyck head pro Luke Burbach, who resigned in March 2022 to take over as the director of golf at the Minikahda Club in Minnesota. Burbach worked as the head pro at the Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed golf course from February 2018 to March 2022.

Reached for comment on Monday morning, Alexander declined to comment. He said he was notified of the club’s decision late Saturday afternoon, Nov. 1.

Bill Collins said five managing members of the Wiltwyck Golf Club, in collaboration with the club’s general manager, Eric Atkins, made the decision to make a change. The five managing members of Wiltwyck are Collins, Mike Beck Jr., Joseph O’Connor, Ed Peterson, and Heidi Kirschner.

“Given the healthy growth of the Wiltwyck operation over the last several years, we just wanted to move in a different direction in terms of management and leadership in our pro shop operation,” Collins said in a phone interview with the Freeman on Monday. “We’re very thankful for Trevor’s involvement with us. He’s a very good person and a family man, and we wish him all the best.”

Collins said the club would post the vacancy on the PGA of America’s nationwide job website. He said the club would also reach out to the Metropolitan PGA Section and the Northeastern New York PGA Section to post the opening on their websites.

Once the job is posted, Collins said the five managing members will review applications for the head professional job and then decide who to interview.

Collins said he expected a new pro would be selected by early next year.

Collins said the club had a two-year renewable contract with Alexander. He said he wasn’t certain what Wiltwyck would offer the new head pro.

“These jobs are at-will employment,” Collins said. “It can be year-to-year. Or sometimes you can see two- or three-year contracts.”

Wiltwyck Golf Club has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years after facing financial difficulties in the mid-2010s through a member-led buyout in 2018.

The new ownership, WGC Holdings, invested in infrastructure, modernized the club’s finances, and maintained the quality of the golf course.

In addition to an 18-hole championship golf course that is consistently rated as one of the top golf courses in the region, the club also offers tennis, pickleball, swimming, dining, and event hosting.

The golf course is open for public play at various times throughout the week.

Wiltwyck Golf Club became a member of the Robert Trent Jones Society in the fall of 2023, joining 40 other Jones-designed clubs around the United States.

Wiltwyck Golf Club was selected as the Robert Trent Jones Society’s Club of the Year in 2024. The recognition reflected Wiltwyck’s dedication to preserving the legacy of one of golf’s most celebrated architects and for advancing the Robert Trent Jones Society’s mission.
