18 Holes at Oglebay Golf Resort! | 18 Holes with Jimmy Hanlin
Welcome to 18 holes. I’m PGA golf professional Jimmy Hanland. And I’m Fox Sports Holly Saunders. And this week we’re in Wheeling, West Virginia at the beautiful Ogleby Golf Resort. Today we’ll be teeing it up at the Spideyel Golf Club on the Arnold Palmer Design, which is the newest here at Ogleby Resort. Yeah, it’s a par 71 layout and perfect for golfers of all skill types, even people who wear pants like that. Let’s go. Come on. All right, Holly. We are on hole number one. We’re playing the Palmer Golf Course today, designed by Arnold Palmer. And uh as what we can see right in front of us here, this is what Oglebe is all about. Hills, hills, and more hills. Oh, stunning views, Jimmy. Doesn’t matter where you hit your ball here, you’re going to have a good day. Now, I grew up not too far down the road in Stuenville, Ohio, but uh it’s been a while since I’ve been here. And I was 2 hours away in Columbus, Ohio. My parents always come here to vacation and just a lovely, lovely resort, but really excited to get out here. I’ve not played this course yet. Let’s do a little vacation ourselves right now. Show me around. All right, let her go. All right, H. This is like a hole where I feel like I could top it and it still gets in the air. That’s a good feeling, right? You got some other stuff out there though. You have to get it up in the air a little bit. All right. Just get a little bit up in the air is what my partner said. [Music] Boom. Up in the air. Man, how high does that thing just seems like it’s up there forever. Makes you feel really good about yourself. Like the hang time. Keep cool. Perfect. Fairway. Perfect. Love it. What a good start to the day. The vacation is off to a nice start. [Music] Right out the gate. Straight up. Look at it. She grabbed that tea. The ball’s going to be in the air for another 20 minutes. Oh, roll. Just going right past me like I’m not even there. Good ball. What do you have? 175. 175. If you were catting for me, what club would you put in my hand right now? Well, you’re much stronger than I am. I would give you a seven. [Music] I hit eight. So, we’ll see if you’re a good caddy or not. Get there. If I’m short, you’re the caddy. Oh, sit. Sit. What is that kick? All right. It It bit up, though. Isn’t it crazy? So, you grew up two hours from here and the difference in topography from Columbus, Ohio to West Virginia and Wheeling is crazy. It’s nice though. It’s nice to be able to get in the car and find something completely different like this. Not so nice for my golf game, though. these uphill downhill lies. We’ll work on those later. I was going to say I have the professional to help me. Not on the first hole. Oh, good swing. Right at it. Sit down though. Go in the hole. You might hit too much down. Oh, go in. I’m going to guess this green isn’t flat. Oh, this is a two-tiered green we just learned. So, I would read this putt for you, but I have no idea. It’s it’s it’s a guess. I’ll tend it for you. How’s that? I’m more concerned about the speed. Come on, Bo. Come on, Bo. Don’t stop now. That’s pretty good. You’ll take that right there. Absolutely. No practice putting before the round. I will take that. Just jumped right in the first tee. Oh, game’s easy for you. I will not step in your line. That’ll be your best two putt of 2018 right there. Let’s We haven’t seen the rest of this golf course. Yeah, that’s true. [Music] Oh, did I get a good read? Just hit it too hard, man. I did hit These are fast. I never have a problem seeing someone get it there, though, honestly. Yeah, that was These are really These green screens are really good. Good. I’ll take that. Two pars for on the first hole, huh? I love that first hole. A good hole. There’s a lot of uh variables that I didn’t consider there. Well, we got more holes playing. Let’s do it. The second hole here at Ogleby Resort is a par five and it is reachable. But first off the tea, once your ball hits the fairway, it’s all going to run toward the right side. Make sure you play it far enough out to the left. And I mentioned this is reachable, but you have to look out for those two bunkers right in front of the green guarding it closely. That looked good. Can’t see it, but it felt good. Uphill, uphill, uphill. That’s how you describe hole number three, par three. Bunkers are on the left. Big bailout area on the right. But you better have enough of this right here to get it up to that green. Cut a little. Just a little. be enough. And this is uphill here at the fourth hole. You don’t want to find the center of the fairway. What am I talking about? You have two options here. A split fairway where you can battle the heather on the left or the bunkers on the right. But make sure that you enjoy the beauty of this par4. The Arnold Palmer Group crushed it on the par 3es here on this golf course. Bunkers on the left a little bit downhill. Long hole here, but the green is the tricky part here on hole number five. Once you get it on there, two putt is really good. This game’s so easy for you. I’m telling you, we’ve only played six holes with all these hills, man. I’m I’m hurting. This is like It’s like too much work for old man. You got 12 more to go. I know. You’re right. More 18 holes coming up after this. All right, smash it down there. Lots of fairway out there. Just asking for my golf ball, please. Positive. There we Oh, go. That hurt a little bit. Looks good, though. What are you wincing about? That’s great. All right, get off the tea. Stop making fun of me today. Stay there. Hang on. Skirt past that bunker. You’re good. Oh, yeah. Oh, I wanted to cut some of it off. You’ve been getting some good bounces here, too, today. It’s always an excuse why I’m beating you. It’s the bounces. You got to find something, right? Your ankle hurts. Your pants are ugly. What’s wrong with my pants? See, now I’m just getting in your head. You are getting in my head right now. Can you stop it? Sunscreen? No, not sunscreen. I’ll give you a chance to make fun of me again since it’s your purpose in life. All right. So, so I use this actually. I have like pained, you know, golf Australian dream and it’s not greasy, which I love. No odor, which I love, too. So, I put it on before the round, but I’ll actually put it on during the round, too, because, you know, I get a little, you know, hit that drive a little hard, you know, a little pull in the elbow there, but uh it helps me get through rounds. But, I’ll use it before, during, and after, and it’s it’s awesome. I mean, it’s just uh it’s the best product that I’ve used ever. Odorfree and non- greasy. Two things that you’re that he’s not. Oh, thanks a lot. Well, at least my product is. All right. Can you just hit the ball? All right, Jimmy. First thing I notice here, this lie everywhere in this golf course brush, right? Yeah. This is the most severe one I’ve had so far. And I don’t have much room to work with up there. So, what am I doing? So, here’s the deal, Holly, is people ignore me. They don’t want to. They You have If you don’t have a flat line, you have to focus. Okay? You have to figure out where your weight’s going to go with you. Where’s your weight going to go? Stand over this ball right now. Take it to the top. It’s going to fall forward. Right? So, you need to sit back a little bit. Keep your weight a little bit more back on your heels. Second thing is you’re not going to get through this because no matter what you do, you’re you’re going to fall forward a little bit. That’s so severe. So, you’re going to lose this ball to the right. So, aim it left and trust it. But when I say aim it left, aim it left and swing it left. If you got to swing it towards those, you know, that fescue over there, the ball will fall for you. Right. Cuz if I’m aiming there, but still swinging how I am, it’s going to end up right in that. It’s going to go in the water. Right. Right. I’m kind of yelling at you, right? It sounds more like a life lesson. I know. I get a little frustrated with people because they just can’t. They just don’t do it. Just do it. Okay. Well, I’m going to try, Mom. I did. I got a little lies drive me crazy. I’m going to do my best here. Yeah, we got it. Aim left and trusted and we got it. Oh, look at you trusting me. [Music] Great shot. Now you Now you can calm down. Yeah, I had to calm down a bit there. Great angle here. How far do you have? This is about 200 right here. I think I can get there. He’s right in your wheelhouse. Same thing as I was telling you though. I’m going to get my shoulders level with the ground and I’m going to keep them here. So many people want to get go in their regular posture and they’re going to hit behind the golf ball. So shoulders level with my lie, but you got to focus on every shot here at Ogleby. I’m a little less angry when it’s me hitting a shot, huh? Solid lost right. Hey, got it there. It’s on the green. I heard this green’s brutal though. Stay there. It’s a safe shot, though. All right, I’m calm down now. No more no more lessons on lies today. It was the Australian dream. I don’t need more life lessons is what I don’t need from you. Feels good. All right, we’re going to try something a little fancy here for you. Gosh, still can’t stop it. Stop. Stop. Wow. All right, you got an easy putt coming back up. Yeah, I don’t know what else I would have done there. I would have much rather had your shot right there. Chip it in. [Music] Oh, good touch. Look at you go. Nice. That was a good touch back there. That’s just textbook. The kind of chip you want to have. Nice lie. Can I have this or Yeah, you can have it. Thank you. Tap it in. But you can have it. Thank you. Right. Good birdie. Finish it out. But good birdie. Thank you. Dude, you know how many comments I’ve got from putting it in the water in Florida? It’s tremendous. Like, every person that saw the show says something to it. Looks good. Oh. Hey, it’s a good roll though. I was walking that one right there, huh? It’s because it knew that you were smug, so it was like h no thanks. But on this hole, I hit good drive, good second shot, but because I didn’t leave it in the right spot. It’s called ogleby right there. It’s called golf. It’s called golf. That’s exactly right. I have finally found my stride. So, we continue after this. Looking forward to it. I know you’re not. I know, right? All right, Holly Birdie. Three out of the first six holes. So, it’s time for me to finally find my golf game here on hole number seven. Hazard to the right off the tease. Fairway bunker here to the left. If you can drive it up in this area, got a pretty straightforward shot into this green if you can avoid the bunkers. Oh, it’s got to be the right club though. Sounded nice. Be the right club. Buff. Buff. be enough. All right. Nice. Thanks. Now you got smart. I did get smart. I’m going to make Bernie going to catch you. You’re leaving it under the hole. Putting a beating on me here in West Virginia. Here at the eighth hole, we have another reachable par five. But wait up just a minute. You have to find the left side of this fairway in order to see the pin and have a nice look in. Otherwise, you’re going to have a blind shot into this heavily guarded green. Stay there. Stay there. Oh, right short there. Right in front. Think it stayed up, but couple feet left. That would have bounced up nicely. Yeah, that was just You just missed that. I shouldn’t complain. This is better than I played in a long time. Par five. Hole number nine is another really good par three on the Palmer Golf Course here at Ogleby. Bunkers left can be a problem though because your line to the green from this back tee takes you right over top of the Heather. But once you get it on this green, you’re halfway done. Another very difficult green here on the Palmer Golf. As we begin the back nine here at Ogleby Resort, it’s up to you on number 10. How gutsy are you feeling? How much do you want to cut off here? Some of the longer hitters will even go for the green, but you can see what’s up there. It’s not easy. We’re here on hole number 11. It’s a par five and it is uphill all the way off the tea. The fairway slants in from both sides, so you should have no problem driving your ball into this fairway. Here at Ogleby, they’ve been on a water band, so you’ll see a little bit of brown in the fairways right now. That’ll be lifted soon. And I promise you, when you come to visit here, it’ll be as green as Ireland. Well, I hope you’re up for a challenge here at the par for 12th hole. It’s very, very long and it’s all sloping left to right. You can see all of that in the fairway and on top of it, this green is two-tiered, all running away from you, all presenting a level of difficulty off that lie. Look at you just fading it right in. Oo pin high but maybe a little deep. Little deep. That was in the air a long time but that’s what this hole does. The part threes here on the Palmer Golf Course definitely do not disappoint. And number 13 here will not. It’s downhill. You must pay attention to the wind. But the green is the difficult part of this golf hole. It wraps around the water and depending where the pin is, this hole can play completely different day after day. Six par fives here at the Palmer Porsche at Ogleby Resort. And we have another one here at the 14th pole. And I sound like a broken record, but it’s another reachable par five. So take your driver out. Swing it with confidence. Okay, we’re standing on the 15th T. And it is 250 yards from the backs. And you’re not going to believe this. It’s a par three up. You’re not going to believe it. I can’t believe it. All right, moving on. Number 15 is actually a par three uphill. 250 yards from all the way back here. The green is huge in the bunker on the left is really deep. Probably the hardest hole on this side on the golf course. Maybe the hardest hole on the property here at Ogle ever in the history of of West Virginia. Well, I hope you brought your fade for hole number 16 here at Ogleby Resort because this entire hole curves gently to the right. And make sure to take an extra club when hitting into this uphill green. winner. The par threes are really good here. I mean, every single one of them I keep saying, “Oh man, it’s going to be my favorite one.” This might be my favorite one right here. It’s really good. But there’s so much to do here. Over here, you see the cabins, the accommodations here for different types of golf packages. Because you have couples that come in, they probably want to stay at the lodge. That’s where the restaurants are. Five restaurants here, by the way. I think the guys when they come in, they want to play cards, maybe cook for themselves. You have the cottages over here. It’s really good. I love it. It’s a good place. It’s not too far from where we grew up. We’ve always It’s been kind of a mainstay in our lives, right? Yeah. I just wish I had better company. Oh, here we go. The better company’s about to jar it on this hole on you right here. Here we go. Oh, wow. That was solid, too. You’re right on top. Stone. That’s all right. It’s better than that bunker. It really said much about my pants today. They’re kind of rocking. Do they need to have any introduction or any commentary? Like just want to make sure I feel like everyone noticed them. If you were worried about that, it didn’t get past anybody. Solid, but maybe a little Hang there. Hang there. Come on, honey. Was that your your West Virginia accent, by the way? Why did you hear a little West Virginia there? He said, “Come on, honey.” Oh, that’s really good. Sit down. Release. Release. You’re saying Wow, that’s like a weird turn. Yeah, it breaks left, huh? Come on. Oh, that was a bad read. Thought it was going to go that way. Everything went left. So did mine. way more than I thought and it doesn’t make any sense. Yeah, sense that there’s a certain way at Ogleby that the ball breaks and I think yours is pretty straight from there. Tough to miss putts here. That rolled really good. That was good up and down. Barely made it. All right, so we got one more hole to go into the 19th hole. The best part of the day. Love the 19th hole. 19th hole. Celebrate Ogleby in your stellar round and pants. Nice. Oh yeah. Piped on 18. Oh, bounced to the right. Oh, it’s heart crushing. That was crush actually. It’s been high, huh? Good shot. Can’t see. I think it’s good. Welcome to the 19th hole and we sit here just off the 10th tea of the Jones Golf Course. Lots of golf here at Oglebe home. Oh, it was one of the more enjoyable rounds I’ve played in 2018. Really, really enjoyed it. Partner, okay, stop taking credit for it. Ogleby is an amazing place. The course again, you can make it as difficult as you want it to be, but today there was not that much water. There wasn’t too much sand, and I really enjoyed it after taking some time off. You know, I think there’s families that come here too and spend time at Oakleby just because it’s just such a beautiful area, especially during the summer, kayaking, fishing. If you’re not into the golf, I mentioned earlier the spa. It’s it’s really got something for everyone, especially kids, too. It’s family friendly. The people that I know, the members that I know that come here from my place, cuz it’s only about a 2 and a half hour drive from where we’re at in Cleveland. Uh the people that come here, they come here because the different accommodations. They’re looking for different things. It’s almost like, you know, the cottages are almost like having your own house. We talked about it earlier. And then you got a big group lodge. Yeah. And then you have the hotel rooms if you want to be right there with the restaurants and the five restaurants I think are important. But my parents come down about four times a year, especially at Christmas time. Really? Yes. The Christmas lights are are epic here. Everybody knows about it. So if you haven’t gotten a chance, and again, you mentioned there’s a zoo. How many places can say they have a full-on zoo? We’ve been to two this year. Neolen and here. But I agree with you. They’re not everywhere. And we do want people to know, so they did have a a time where they weren’t allowed to water as much here. They had some construction going on where they had a, you know, they weren’t allowed to water the golf course as much. So, you’ll see a little bit of brown out there while we were out there today. But, you know, this golf course will be back in, you know, a week or two and it’ll be green as it all. The greens were really great. No, it will be a no-brainer if you’ve never been here before. And, uh, it’s there’s no way you’re not going to like it if you come here. It has a Midwestern feel as far as the people go. Very nice people, but these hills, you’re not in Ohio. Yeah. Yeah, you’re absolutely not Ohio for sure. It’s it’s uh it’s very, very hilly. It’s great. Great place. So, all right. Well, we’ve got to go. We’ve got to go on to our next destination. But, uh, I want to thank Danny Arian and the and the people here at Ogleby. They’ve treated us great. Wonderful. Wonderful. Wonderful lodging, hospitality. Really great. Really impressed. And then I think that led to our good scores today. Yeah, that’s exactly. We were comfortable. Right. Correct. That’s exactly right. And uh we want to thank all of you for watching us this week on 18 holes. Oh, it’s got to cut. Get around that bunker. Number 50. I can’t believe it. Good. You were chill.
