You should be playing golf with a closed stance. Let me explain why. One of the most common swing faults and bad shots for amateurs is a slice and coming over the top. Within my coaching, I hear of a lot of people saying they don’t feel like they have good rotation in their back swing. We can cure that with our stance. If you have your feet aligned perpendicular to the target line and you keep your trail foot straight, this is very limiting on your rear hip. If you allow your trail foot to drop back slightly and flare out, this automatically opens up your hip a little bit more and allows you a greater range of motion to be able to turn effectively into your back swing. If you can turn effectively into your back swing, you now don’t have to compensate by bending your arms, which puts you in a collapsed and closed position here, which leads to your over the top and casting swing. Have that bit more of a closed stance. It’s not going to make you hit the ball right or hit big hooks. I have a closed stance. I play fades. So, set up normally. Then from here, drop that trail foot back just a couple inches and then turn it out slightly. From here, make your normal swing. You’ll find that you can actually feel like you can turn more into your trail glute.

  1. I am also someone who fades only. What would be some great advice for a draw especially for driver. Would love your input

  2. I'm 55, pretty flexible for my age but not like I was 20yrs ago.
This is a great tip that ensures a better hip move because if the hips don't move properly then forget all about decent ball contact.
