ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. – Central Michigan’s Keith Hunter shot a 5-under par 66 on Saturday to share the first-round lead at the Fripp Island Intercollegiate at Ocean Creek Golf Club.
 
Hunter, a senior from New Hamburg, Ont., is tied with Winston Kelenc-Blank of Lafayette atop the leaderboard. They hold a one-shot lead over Jude Carper of Gardner-Webb.
 
Hunter’s 66 ties his career low for aggregate score, and his 5-under is a career best. He posted a 66 in the second round of the Earl Yestingmeier Invitational in Muncie, Ind. That score came at Delaware Country Club, which was playing to par 70.
 
Hunter’s round on Saturday at Ocean Creek included seven birdies against two bogeys.
 
The second round is scheduled for Sunday and the final round of the 54-hole, stroke-play event is set for Monday.
 
It is the final tournament of the fall season for the Chippewas.
 
Hunter led the Chippewas to a 5-over 289 team score. CMU is tied with Charleston Southern for fourth place in the nine-team field.
 
Gardner-Webb (283) is first, one shot ahead of Lafayette.
 
Also for the Chippewas on Saturday, Jeffrey Andrus shot a 1-over 72, Hudson Vedder posted a 4-over 75, Philippe Yturralde shot a 5-over 76, and Jeffrey Sager shot a 6-over 77.
 
Andrus is tied for 15th, Vedder is tied for 36th, Yturralde is tied for 39th, and Sager is 44th.
 
CMU’s Nicholas Kilgore, playing as an individual, shot 80 on Saturday and is tied for 52nd.
