NORMAN, Okla. – Charlotte Men’s Golf has been ranked 24th in the final Bushnell/Golfweek DI Coaches Poll to wrap up the fall season, in addition to being tabbed 22nd in the latest Scoreboard Rankings powered by Clippd.
Charlotte went 38-16-2 in their four fall tournaments including a second-place finish at the Bryan Bros Collegiate and a top five finish at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate, where Chase Cline won the individual title to earn himself American Conference Golfer of the Month honors. The 49ers are the highest ranked team in the American, with Rice (50th) and Memphis (61st) as the next two.
“Overall, I feel like the fall season was good,” said Head Coach Ryan Cabbage. “We showed signs of being a good team at times, but we also have a lot of things that we need to get better and improve in if we expect to compete with the best teams in the country. Three different times this fall we played the final round with either Virginia or LSU, which are currently number one and number two in the country, so we know what that looks and feels like. We know we can compete with that, but we also know we’ve got to get better to beat those teams. That now becomes our objective in the off-season before we get started back up in February.”
After finishing either first or second in all four of their fall tournaments, Virginia took over No. 1 in the Bushnell/Golfweek DI Coaches Poll. The Cavaliers, winners of the Ben Hogan Collegiate presented by Charles Schwab (co-champion) and the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, received 18 first-place votes and 543 points in the process.
LSU (two first-place votes), Vanderbilt (one first-place vote), Texas, and Arizona State rounded out the top five, while Illinois, Auburn, Florida, Oklahoma State (one first-place vote), and Ole Miss completed the top 10.
Justin Matthews is ranked 49th in the individual rankings as the highest ranked Charlotte 49er. Matthews completed the fall with a 68.5 adjusted scoring average in nine rounds of play. Matthews was away from the team during The Bryson Invitational in Daniel Island, competing for Team Canada at the World Amateur Team Championships in Singapore. Frazer Jones is 55th individually also with a 68.5 adjusted scoring average, recording two top 10 finishes highlighted by finishing tied for second at the Bryan Bros Collegiate in Columbia.
