Qualicum Beach is officially moving ahead with its purchase of the Eaglecrest Golf Course lands.

Last week, the town approved rezoning as part of its groundwork ahead of the purchase, which had a deadline of Nov. 1.

Now, Qualicum Beach announced it is moving ahead with the $8.5 million purchase.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our community,” Mayor Teunis Westbroek said in a news release.

“Through the many conversations, meetings, and feedback we’ve received, it became clear that the community wanted the Eaglecrest lands preserved for future generations. We are proud to be part of this historic decision.”

The town will now be looking for an operator for the golf course operations, finalizing the land and asset transfer, and undergoing public consultation for the housing development and park planning.

Of the 105-acre property, 10 acres is set aside to be sold for housing development. About 40 per cent of the land will be forested parkland, and the remaining will be a nine-hole golf course.
