A golf course in Nanaimo says police are investigating after a reportedly stolen truck was driven onto the course then set on fire early Thursday morning.
Jim Smith, general manager at Eaglequest Golf Nanaimo, says firefighters were called to the truck fire around 6 a.m.
A video shows the damaged truck surrounded by fire retardant foam at the edge of the golf course.
The truck was spotted near the Trans-Canada Highway but was actually on the golf course’s property, says Smith.
“So I guess somebody stole the truck sometime last night, they drove it onto the property, ran across #9 green, did some donuts on that fairway and ended up launching it into some trees and lighting it on fire,” he said.
“Apparently there’s been a rash of those.”
Smith says he was told by firefighters that there have been a few recent incidents of trucks being stolen, then taken for a joyride before being lit on fire.
Fortunately, Smith says the damage to the golf course is superficial, and that it’s been more of a nuisance to deal with than a real blow.
“Luckily, not great tires on the truck, so left marks but didn’t dig in,” he said.
He said the golf course called the RCMP and started a file. In the meantime, the course is open as usual.
