KĀ’ANAPALI, Maui – Anson Cabello shot a second straight 4-under 67 Tuesday in the second round of the Kā’anapali Classic by OUTRIGGER to lead the University of Hawai’i men’s golf team.
Cabello, a Maui native, is 8-under 134 for the tournament and tied for 12th place, seven strokes behind leader Ryder Cowan of Oklahoma (126) heading into Wednesday’s final round.
Three-time defending Kā’anapali champion Oklahoma leads the tournament by 12 strokes at 47-under 521 over second place TCU (533). Georgia (536), Florida Gulf Coast (540), and Colorado (542) round out the Top 5.
The Rainbow Warriors carded a 2-under 282 and are tied for 14th place at 10-under 558.
UH’s James Whitworth and Nathan Szpakowicz each shot even par 71. Whitworth is tied for 66th at 1-under 141 while Szpakowicz is tied for 86th at 1-over 143. Maui native Chris Salem shot 2-over 73 and is 1-under 141 for the tournament and tied for 66th. Dane Watanabe shot 74 and is tied for 96th at 3-over 145.
Three other ‘Bows are competing as individuals – Alec Hilgers (74=152, 113th), Cameron Combado (77=153, 115th), and Quinn Murray (79=158, 117th).
Georgia’s J.D. Culbreth tied the Royal Kā’anapali Course record with a 10-under 61 joining Jim Colbert (1991) and Jay Siegel (1998), who also fired 61 in Senior PGA Tour events.
The tournament concludes on Wednesday.
