HATTIESBURG, Miss. (October 27, 2025) – The University of North Alabama women’s golf team underwent some soggy conditions in the opening round of The Judson on Monday in Hattiesburg Miss.
However, the Lions started strong despite the conditions and leveled out toward the afternoon as the course dried up. The Lions are currently in the middle of the pack in sixth place with a score of 600 — 24-over-par.
This is the fourth and final fall tournament for UNA this season, which will conclude with 18 holes tomorrow morning.
The Lions are comfortably ahead of the bottom half of the 11-team field so far, leading seventh place Lamar by nine strokes. UNA has a 12-stroke lead on Belmont, a 15-stroke lead on Atlantic Sun Conference rival Austin Peay and in-state foe Alabama State, while also leading traditional Gulf South Conference foe Mississippi College, who is ranked 45th in Division II.
UNA has a lot to play for in the final round, as both Samford and West Georgia are tied for fifth within striking distance of the Lions. UNA will play with these two teams in hopes of gaining ground in the final round; both UWG and Samford are 11-over.
The top three teams are all under par, led by Tulane with a score of 565 to sit 11-under. Host school Southern Miss is three strokes behind Tulane, while ASUN representative Central Arkansas is third — six strokes back at five-under.
The Lions had a strong showing from top golfer Sirichaya Chanpen, who is tied for 14th at one-over-par 145. She is only seven strokes back of the leader — Fernanda Gorostiaga of Southern Miss.
Chanpen started two-over in the first round, leveling out with two birdies and two bogeys before a tough hole on the 18th added two strokes. However, the Thailand native bounced back in the second round with a career-low round of 71 to go under par for the first time. The sophomore had four birdies in the second round. She started with a bogey on hole nine, then got under par with birdies on 12 and 15. She stayed there with the help of two more birdies on Holes 1 and 2.
Redshirt junior Kerigan Klauber, who recorded a 69 last time out in Arkansas, is tied for 23rd just four strokes behind Chanpen. Klauber started hot despite the tough conditions early in the day, recording a team-leading five birdies in the opening round for a 70.
Two strokes behind her was true freshman Lisa Palmgren — a breakout candidate on the Lions roster come spring time. The Swedish golfer is currently tied for 29th with four birdies in the first round and three in the second. Her card reads 74+77 for a 152 stroke score.
Palmgren’s highlight was a birdie on Hole 18 in the second round, which gave most golfers problems throughout the day. Statistically, it was the hardest hole for all players in the field with 34 double bogeys across the board. Palmgren had one of just 16 birdies on the par four.
Rounding out UNA’s lineup were a pair of top 50 leaderboard sitters in junior Ava Schwartz and freshman Kiersten Riggins. Schwartz is currently 11-over after a stronger day on the back nine of the course in both rounds. Riggins is 16-over with back-to-back rounds of 80, including three birdies.
The Lions are back tomorrow at 8 a.m. on Holes 4-8 along with West Georgia and Samford.
