Hey there, Siguro golfers. Tom Siguro here and I’m very excited to see you in today’s episode where we are talking about something that’s particular to senior golfers and golfers with limited mobility. And this big lie, this myth that’s perpetuated down the line of golfers from generation to generation that for some reason people think you can’t hit the ball far or you say, “I’m too old. I can’t get in a full back swing position.” And then what happens is you end up having back pain, knee pain, hip pain, surgeries of some kind, and you get into this thing called protect mode where you do everything you can to protect your lower back or your knees and your hips. Often comes in the form of a very short limited swing. I see this all the time in the range. You see swings that look like this. Oh, I’m protecting my back. I’m protecting my body. I’m not doing anything to my body. I just played golf with a guy yesterday. Same position, had surgery on his lower back. He’s afraid to put any strain on his back. And this was causing him to have all sorts of swing issues. On about the 13th hole, I pulled him aside. I said, “Do you realize you’re only using about 20% of your power potential because you’re trying to protect your back and trying to protect your back is placing more stress on your back.” And he was like, “What? How is that possible?” So, I pulled him aside and I was able to get him into a PGA Tour level back swing and turn without any back pain and a lot less stress on his body. And he said, “I didn’t realize I could get into that position.” So, I’m going to share with you the big problem facing tons of senior golfers today, and that’s the idea of protecting your body. So, when I think about protecting, I don’t want to place any stress here. So I automatically start thinking how can I limit my body’s range of motion to avoid feeling anything in my back. But the ironic part about this strange funny part is that when you do this you place more restriction on your body. So right now I feel more tension in my lower back hips and knees all through this idea of protect. Isn’t that strange? When we humans think about trying to protect something, we take all of our resources and taking me here and we don’t think about opportunity. No, this is an opportunity for you to expand your golf swing into a new dimension. So instead of protecting because I’m so focused on restrict, restrict, restrict, placing more stress on my joints, I want to change your mind to open up. And this is the part where a lot of golfers will say, “I can’t do that, Tom. There’s no way. I’ve been stuck in this one way for years.” Now, just put down some of these old longheld thoughts for just one moment. Everybody in this room has a spine. And everybody in this room has the ability to turn their shoulders to 90 degrees. An average human can do this. I want you to just tilt your spine toward the target for one second. So, we’re going to lean the spine down to where we stop comfortably. That’s my full left tilt of my spine. Now, I want you to do another thing for me. Go ahead and turn your shoulder. Turn your chest so your shoulder gets under your chin. So, I’m pointing the center of my chest away from the target. Now, to do this, I’ve got to get out of the mindset of protect. I have to allow my body to work. So, what you’ll see happen is your belt buckle starts turning away from the target. This is a beautiful thing called hip turn. And the hip turn is what unlocks the lower back and takes the tension away. So, I start pointing my chest away. There’s a beautiful shoulder turn. And then my hips are free. My lower back is lifted from any tension. So, what we’re going to do is combine those two things into a tension-free swing. Isn’t this great? All of the years of just protecting your back gone. Instead, getting a swing that’s far more powerful because you know all your swing problems are coming from this. You’re like, “Ah, my back does this. I got this problem.” Being here is the easiest way to chunk a ball, flip at it, and have no power. You can’t tell me you’re satisfied with that. So, what we’re going to do is combine tilt, turn, so you have a relationship with the ball. When my spine has this relationship to the ground throughout the swing, that enables me to strike the ground after the ball. It’s a requirement of great ball striking. Look at that. Nice, nice strike. I can only do that with the swing that you’re learning right here. So, just do this for me. And that’s very similar to last week’s episode. If you watch that, we’re going to tilt and then add in that turn. Start turning that chest away from the target. Now, we put those two together. It looks something like this. And if you want to envision, there’s a line, this grip end of my club pointing at the target. Add the turn. It points at the camera now. Points away from points at you guys. Add the tilt. And now the grip end points now at the ground towards the ball. And what you’ll see happen, I establish this relationship with the ball at address. And watch this. Relationship is going to be maintained. relationship here with the spine, relationship at the top with the spine still maintained. So, as you’re swinging, have that vision of this straight line off of your left shoulder, your lead shoulder, and you’re trying to get it down right there to the ball. In the process, a few things have happened to take the stress off your body. the straightening of this leg, the hips turning, the chest turning. Can’t you see how that’s so opposite from protect your back? So, we’re going out of the protect mindset into this opening up your body mindset. Getting out of protect helps you take the stress off of your back. So when you think about your swing, get out of protect mode and start using the natural resources of your body. Shoulders, hips, knees free flowing instead of restricting. Think about your swing that way. You’ll take a whole lot of stress off of it. [Music]

Has anyone taken Tom's course and improved by it?
My swing needs help.
Just sent this to three people.
Tom I normally follow & enjoy your videos. Since this latest video describes me perfectly thought I’d give it a try. You were correct my lower back was great but now my upper back is in pain. Followed your instructions but must be doing something wrong.
Hi I’ve watched your videos for the last few days and I must admit i doubted what I was hearing but tested at the range today and I’m consistently hitting it great and they are going a mile. I couldn’t believe it. Thank you so much. However most shots are slightly going right with every club. Is this likely a grip issue or posture.
Also they say the tennis swing and golf swing are similar? Do you play tennis? If so I’m wondering if I should concentrate on hitting off the front foot with the elbow tucked in? The establishment say otherwise
Got the online course a few years ago as a near 20hc golfer. Last week I shot 76 at Pasatiempo. Current HC is under 10. Thanks Tom.
Been striking the ball so consistent lately, I am afraid to watch any swing videos thanks to you Mr Tom. Hope to go play tommorow. Shot a 78 last monday.
Watching your videos has helped my game tremendously. Thank you very much. Reggie
