EDISTO BEACH, S.C. – The Elon women’s golf team stayed firmly in title contention at the Edisto Island Invitational with a 15-over-par 299 in the second round Tuesday. The Phoenix (+25), which led the 14-team field after the first 18 holes of play, ended the second round in second place and trails only host College of Charleston (+20).
Emma Hansen carded an even-par 71 in the second round to remain at 1-over (72-71 – 143) for the tournament. The Phoenix sophomore is in sole possession of second place and sits two shots behind College of Charleston’s Molly Hardwick (-1) after 36 holes. Hansen – who owned a share of the individual lead after round one – got off to a slow start Tuesday with back-to-back bogeys on holes 3-4, but rebounded with three birdies on holes 5, 10 and 15.
Senior Ashley Lafontaine is in solo fourth place after 36 holes as she shot a 3-over 74 in round two. Despite a triple bogey on the first hole of the day, she shot even par across the remaining 17 holes to stay within five shots of the individual lead. Kelly Zhao (+9) and Annie Wu (+11) are tied for 14th and 22nd, respectively after both shot 6-over 77 in the second round.
Freshman Lara Rieke, playing as an individual, shot the second-best round of her young collegiate career with a second-round 74 to climb 10 spots into a tie for 22nd with Wu.
The Phoenix sits 13 shots ahead of third-place Georgia State entering the third round.
