00:00 Introduction
01:23 Free Golf Tip Rubric
05:15 Let’s Test this on Golf.com
10:45 My Final Word
You ever read a golf magazine and think, “Who the hell writes this? People who never actually hit a golf ball.” Every issue is the same reheated casserole of tour secrets that sounds like they were translated from Sanskrit by a guy who’s never broken 90. Half the tips contradict each other so bad you need Indiana Jones, a map, and a PhD in biomechanics just to find your back swing. And don’t even get me started on those top 100 coach lists. It’s the most awkward group high fives in sports. You know the one two golfers trying to celebrate miss completely stare at their hands and pretend it didn’t happen. That’s the relationship between the magazines and the coaches. One whiffs, the other one acts like it’s connected and both walk away pretending it was pure magic. Like Silicone Valley trying to sell enlightenment. It’s shiny. It’s confidence and it’s completely made up. Meanwhile, you’re trying to follow a tip so confusing it needs subtitles sweating through your polos like you’re doing archaeology with bad posture and a gloved hand. So, today I’m done reading fairy tales. We’re running these glossy page fixes through my keep it or crap it rubric. And you can use the same test next time you’re waiting through the endless sea of golf advice. Because let’s be honest, if golf tips were any deeper, we’d need scuba gear to find the truth and a net to catch all the crap floating on top. [Music] This video is I’ve been getting a lot of emails and messages and comments saying, “Tony, does this drill work for me? How does this drill look? Is this drill good?” Well, unfortunately, I cannot tell you because I don’t know your swings, cause, and effect, and I don’t know what you need to work on. So, to help you guys out, this is the next best thing. Here is our keep it or crap it golf tip rubric and it’s basically seven quick questions that’ll take you down this and will give you a point system and it’ll say yes, it’s a keeper or try it, maybe not, or just toss it in the trash. It is just crap. And we’re going to actually go to golf.com and see some of their tips and put the tips to the test. Before that, let’s go over this rubric. The seven questions are pretty self-explanatory. Does it explain cause and effect clearly? So for an example, if you’re working on your center point moving further ahead of the golf ball, it’ll give you something like shift the pressure early, which will move that center point over. So in other words, it’s working on some cause and effect. Number two is, can you test it with 10 to 20 golf balls? An example, you want to hit 10 shots and see if contact improves or your low point for this example moves forward. If it does, okay, it’s trackable. It’s testable. This is something that’s probably worthy of your time. Number three, does it fit your body type or miss pattern? This is a big one. Example, for slicers who swing over the top, it’s not ideal for players who hook. That should be something in the verbiage. So, if you look at a tip and it has nothing to do with ball flight, it’s just a random tip. Chuck it in the trash. Don’t even go through steps four through seven. Toss that thing away. Number four, is it simple and specific enough to feel instantly? example, pressure into the lead foot earlier instead of vague terms like activate your kinetic chain. You want words that speak to you that can help you transfer what is said to what needs to be done and also your feel. Which takes us to number five. Does it include a clear drill or feel to train it? In other words, placing a towel under your trail arm during a half swing. This is a clear drill. A field drill is something like, I need you to feel your weight moving to your back left heel, which will kind of give you the same sort of place because things are moving this way. Obviously, feel isn’t real. And we see many of these gurus teaching feel swings, which is why it’s so frustrating for me as an instructor because I’m there to help them develop their own feel with me looking at them to make sure they’re in positions first. Number six, does it show proof or example? In other words, does it give you data? there’s good visuals or a professional reference. Watch Rory’s hip lead move forward. It’s the same feel. So, there’s something that you can look and say, “Okay, well, this is kind of what I want to feel like.” But then again, you have to know if it’s working for you. And this one’s a big one. Does it avoid too good to be true claims? Example, fix your slice forever swings. It’s obviously too good to be true. But here’s how you know how to spot the too good to be true tips right here. So, if you get zero to one red flag, so if zero to one of these pops up, that’s probably going to be a decent tip. If two to four of these pop up, throw that thing in the trash, recycle bin, promises instant results, nope. Claims it works for everybody. Nope. Offers no measurable feedback. Nope. Contradicts basic physics or biomechanics. This is a big one. And you see a lot of these gurus out there saying, “I have a swing that contradicts physics. I have a swing that goes against the biomechanics.” that this is a a swing that nobody’s ever taught before because obviously they must have some direct line to, you know, Hogan’s ghost back up in heaven somewhere. If you get between five to seven questions that support this, that’s a keeper. You want to probably use this. It has solid cause and effect. It’s measurable and it’s realistic. If it’s three to four, hey, it’s worth a try. If it works, yeah, good enough. If not, toss it in the trash. And if it’s 0 to2, it’s crap. Just don’t even don’t even read it. just teared out the magazine and put it in the fire. But let’s look at it now on an actual website. Let’s go to golf.com. All right, we are in golf.com. Let’s take a look at the instruction and see what they have to offer for instruction. Okay, let’s see. Do we have anything here? Uh, this unorthodox putting technique, Gary players unique. What is this? Dismiss. I don’t want these people tracking me. What is this? This content is available only to inside golf members. What? Free stuff worthund No, it’s not 140. It’s 165. Add free experience. Well, how much is this? Join now. Let me just see how much this is to get all these beautiful tips. Let’s make something up. Take my money atgmail.com. Password. Um, rip off tips. Confirm password. Rip off tips. That password must contain at least number. Rip off tips. 72. Passwords don’t match. Uh, and one capital letter, man. Rip off tips 72. Rip off tips 72. One special character. Man, this is impossible. Cookie Monster. Address line 1 2 3 4. Sesame Street and we’ll say it’s in California. Beverly Hills 90210. Just like that TV show. Name on credit. It doesn’t even show me what I’m paying for. So, I don’t even know how much this is. I just need to move my head. It’s $39.99 a year. So, for $39.99 a year, you get unlimited tips. And you don’t even know if they work for you, but let’s just go back. All right, let’s see. Is there any free tips we can have? Top 100. Okay, this this one looks really good. Let’s move my head there. Unleash longer drives by mastering this one move. Oo, I love these one key move tips. One key for hitting longer drives is getting an optimal angle of attack with the big stick. While your angle of attack will be negative for most clubs, when it comes to the driver, you want to be hitting more up on the ball. So, in other words, just less down. Because when I hear more up, I’m thinking, okay, I need like a positive one to positive4 launch angle. That’s really hard to do. And right here, it says, look, most PJ tour pros have an average of attack about plus one and LPJ is closer to four. The reason for the discrepancy is that the LPJ pros are swinging slower. So, they need to hit up on the ball more to generate the that’s not the reason. The real reason is because they have a lot more body rotation because they lack upper body strength. Okay. To guard against this, you need to copy the key move that pros use to hit up on the ball. Let’s see. Skip to the 5minute mark. Okay, we’re here talking about angle of attack. Now, this is a big one because so let me explain what the best players in the world do to hit up on the golf ball. What they do is they actually get to the top of their back swing. They have a little bit of a bump, a little bit of movement. so that they get their force or their pressure into that lead foot. Then they push against the ground. And when they push against the ground, it creates rotation. And a lot of times you’ll see this lead shoulder, it moves away from the chin, which gets the club down in front of me. And then as they push, you’ll see the lead shoulder working up and back and the grip end of the club working up and in, which gets the club head to work around. This is the correct way to try and hit up on the ball to use the lead leg and push yourself because if you do that, you’ll use the force of the ground to drive the club back out in front of you. If however, we stay on the back foot and try and hit up on the ball, that’s when you’ll use your wrists and you’ll actually hit it worse. So, always remember the easy button is let’s just move the ball forward or tee it a little bit higher and go in little increments. and that will help you start to hit up on the ball and you may see a difference in your flight. If you’re more of an elite level player and you’re trying to hit up on the ball, then what I would suggest you do is you got to get your force into that lead foot early. So even as the club’s going back, I want to feel like I’m almost falling into my lead side. And then once you feel like you can push yourself backwards because you’ve got enough force into that lead foot, you want to feel like you push and get this lead shoulder working more up and around you. Brother, the people that are looking at this are not elite players. They can already do it. The ones that are doing it are 70 years old. They can barely get out of bed. What are you talking about? So, let’s put this through the test real quick. Does it explain cause and effects clearly? Yeah, he does explain it. I wouldn’t say it’s clear. I’d say it’s very confusing, but there is some cause and effect explanation. So, you know, we’re going to let that pass. Yes. Can you test it with 10 to 20 balls? I think you can test it. So, yes. Does it fit your body type or miss pattern for slices? Yeah, he kind of said that it’s to help you get more up on the ball, but there was no mention of ball position other than the quick fix to move it ahead to help you hit up on the ball, but I’m going to give that a null. Is it simple and specific enough to feel? I’m going to say no. Does it include a clear drill or field to train it? Yeah, I’ll give it that. So, that’s a three. Does it show proof or example, data, visuals, or pro reference? Well, he did reference some of the best in the world of what they do. So, I’m going to say yes. So, we have four yeses, I believe. And does it avoid too good to be true claims? Yeah, he doesn’t really claim that much. So, it’s right on the edge. I mean, that first one is a like a half a point. So, it’s like four and a half. So, I’d say it’s between a yes, give it a try to yes, keep it, depending on if this works for you. It’s definitely not crap. So, I hope that helped you. Follow this rubric. It’s pretty simple. You can apply it to any tips you see, even a YouTube video, even my videos. You might come back and say, “Tony, you scored a two on my rubric. You’re crap.” And that’s okay. It’s all about education here. Hope that helps you. I’ll see you next time. Let me know what you want in the next video. I’ll try and make it happen. Very great. What’s the worst golf tip you’ve ever heard? 👇
Tony I LOVE the range of videos on this channel. It is so refreshing to watch and I look forward to what you bring.
Your opening monologues are Emmy worthy. Where do you find the time?
That’s a great checklist. IMO, tips like the one you reviewed need lots of time and work to see any benefits. While most golfers can improve their game there is no miracle fix. But alas golfers, and fishermen, seem to be more gullible to instant success.
You actually happened to pick a pretty good instructor, Dave Phillips, who works with Dr. Greg Rose on the MyTpi youtube channel. Dr. Greg Rose is a biomechanist who sees many of the top golfers in the world. Dr. Greg Rose usually starts his analysis with a physical and mobility evaluation so that he can identify any strengths or weaknesses that might influence the golf swing. Then he proceeds with a data driven analysis of the golf swing and with recommendations based on the physical strengths and limitations and based on the data on the golf swing and the goals of the golfer. Dave Phillips is present in many of the MyTpi youtube videos with Dr. Greg Rose.
Worst golf tip? Grip it and rip it. Let the Big Dog Eat.
Hi. Just curious if you’ve ever looked at Mike Adams golf? He has a done a lot of research on swing types for different body types. He has written a few books as well as coached a few PGA players. I’m curious to get your take on his theories.
Best drill get in stance lift clubhead straight up level to ground move nothing else. With the club hovering turn back and turn thru hitting ball.
I generally like Danny Maude but when I was trying to get my grip right I went too strong and with my grip and ended up duck-hooking everything so hard my lefty friend's slice got jealous. I ended up having to reset and listened to the Golden Bear and just kept my grip neutral – definitely cut out the wicked hooks and slices.
Another classic Tony.. brilliant stuff
Them all. It's a flowing motion. You don't think when you walk. Salt or pepper.
I think every golf tip is right… for somebody! 😂 definitely not for everyone though
I kind of think that we try to learn golf logically when we dont really learn any physical skills logically.
If id never ridden a bike before, logically youd tell me to sit on it, balance my weight over the middle and peddle and steer. In reality im falling off at the first bend, if not before.
I really think that's why golf is so hard, its so variable that learning a swing on a driving range mat is so different to learning to get the ball around a golf course.
You touched on something towards the end here which is massively overlooked in youtube golf instruction.
Every video is trying to teach a perfect golfswing. Those of
us watching these videos are a million miles away from a perfect golfswing.
I saw a stat that something like 72% (or there abouts) of golfers never break 90 and only 4% break 80. Thats insane!
Breaking 90 isnt really that hard, you dont need to understand ground reaction forces or hit the ball 250 yards to break 90. Just keep it in play, be really competent inside 100 yards and be a decent putter.
🤔 it's sought of hard to describe, but apparently it will give you 30 to 60 yards off the tee and inferred never missing a fairway, needless to say I watched about 10 seconds, I think the tip ran for 🤔 25 secounds
Time to spill the beans Tony & let us see some of your tips / instruction ?
Golf tips are a business since golf started for academics, who are also not famous for beeing naturally gifted in sports or beeing handy with tools..my mom can't swing a club, but she's a natural in everything..I gave her a axe and putted her infront of a tree..told her to slowly act like she would chop it down, and pause when it's in the tree. Then i switch the axe with a club, and there she stood, with zero thoughts and a perfect "impact position"..😂👍
Maybe the best golf tip is to " beware of golf tips" !
Great list Tony, I shall refer to this in future and I loved your commentary whilst trying to create an account, I have been there so many times myself!😂
I used to read the magazines a loooong time ago cover to cover. Then it became apparent the much of swing tips lacked context and was contradictory.
The only useful tip is in a restaurant for the staff.
Check out Peter Croker from down under. I bought his VHS tape in the late eighties. He is still around and has a few things on You Tube. I love his un cock under release.
Every YouTube tip is crap
“SiliconE Valley?”
I used to love the Golf magazine's especially the tips from the professionals! Even back in my day they weren't cheap, I'd get one at Christmas or going on holiday in the train station, probably to keep me quiet! The older you get you learn to filter the majority! Great advice as always Tony!
This is the one Gent from TPI. They have excellent tips but often complicated because they assess elite players. Nevertheless, they do provide excellent mobility Excercise to improve swings.
In addition. I find Porzak golf-saw on your website-the absolute best out there . I am rather surprised that he provides so much practical information and drills to improve one’s swing. Much like this website.
