I've played golf on and off since I was little, recently picked it back up this year heavy playing every weekend. About a 20 handicap now playing somewhere between 90-95. What can I work on with my swing. I struggle with direction (not a draw or fade) just general direction, and I equally hit thin or fat. When I hit a good shot I make good compression with a proper divot, but very inconsistent and struggle with knowing what changes to make. Any help is appreciated! Video attached is both rear and facing video!

Looks like your club face may be open at impact in the first clip but hard to tell

    Golf shoes? 😃

Work on posture (lumbar curve going there) and you dip your shoulder towards the ball at takeaway.

Get rid of the crocs and get some golf shoes

Move the towel closer to the ball? You’re basically teaching yourself its okay to fat it 2″ behind the ball but 2.5″ is unacceptable.

Well for one thing your head bobs down then up, should be more stationary

I am very new to the sport and the one thing I notice is you are leading your back swing with your wrist and your hips don’t turn. I have noticed a big difference with starting my back swing using my hips.

Like I say new to the sport but this seems like something that would impact your consistency

Very clearly, you need more hand depth at the top of your back swing. Your hands should in line with your heels or at least mid foot. You are over your toes at best. From there is really hard not to be steep.

It looks like you’re leaning in to kiss the ball before you hit it

Spine angle is everywhere during your swing. You dip and raise. Hard to hit is solid and straight like that .

Not wearing Crocs, unless you play in them too. Your feet and ankles will thank you.

Most people here saying you need golf shoes….weird. You don’t.

    I have no advice.

You took the advice ‘keep your head down’ way too seriously. I for one think that is the single dumbest piece of advice people give who don’t know what they’re talking about.

Everyone who says different is wrong. Crocs are solid and hit as many balls in them as you want. The towel is fine. Nice strong grip. You’ve got a good swing. You only need to work on one thing. After you hit the ball take a look at the beauty soar. No need to keep you head stationed on the impact zone. That’s none sense. Let the head turn along with the body. Annika Sorenstam and Rocco Mediate head turned even sooner and they are both elite ball strikers.

Do you play in crocs? Maybe don’t practice in them

Please do not crank your wrists back to start your backswing. Almost fell off my chair! We do that at the top.

Too handsy – and release your pose after impact

    1. In the front on view, what is up with your initial move? It looks like you start your swing with your hands. I see a wrist cock with you right elbowing immediately starting to break down in response before your shoulders move significantly.

    2. Are you manipulating the club face in attempt to keep it square to the ball on your backswing?

Skimming other responses some I agree with. You have a posture issue and you don’t turn your hips much on your backswing. But I am really curious what you are thinking here and addressing those first. Plus corrections in your take away are going to allow you to turn your hips more. It looks like you are restricting your hip movement with that super steep swing plane you look to be manipulating your way to. Again why?

You are “getting in your own way”. You want to allow your body to move in its most natural efficient way possible. When my game leveled up, I felt I was swinging the club effortless. It was about followers fundamentals that allowed my body to move effortlessly.

When I was a kid, I had a teammate that as an adult became a world record holder, made the US Olympic team. The thing that stood out to me he used to leave older kids in his dust and it looked like he was barely trying.

Watch a pro’s takeaway. Wrist cock should not be your first move.

  19. Thats pure. Don’t ever change your swing too much. The best advice i got when I started was swing the club fast and hard naturally and then make the changes to angle of wrist and such after that fast had swing is easy to do.

If you are somewhat competent and have good athletic mechanics you will perform a near optimal swing naturally as long as you dont try to hit the ball. When I started my bro literally had me just swing the club sometimes 2 and not hit the ball.

Now when I practice I only focus on wrist angles and when I want to release the club it makes it so easy.

Wrist hinge is a natural and automatic byproduct of having your wrists loose and having proper sequencing. I think you believe you need to cock your wrists and intentionally release the club head, right? When I stopped doing that and let it happen naturally and automatically as a byproduct of letting my wrists do their own thing as I moved my body my aim got a lot better as did my ball contact.

To me it looks like you have a lot going right here. Like your hips are moving well, you build lag, you’re keeping in posture. I think that’s why as you say you compress it sometimes it’s just not reliable. It’s not reliable because for your right now it’s a lot of intentional extra movement and athleticism to time properly because you’re trying to take such an active role in release and lag.

If that makes sense to you let me know and I’ll link some videos that go into it more.

You are pre cocking your wrist on your take away.

I bet you have a case of anterior pelvic tilt. Your hips are sticking out. If we were to track your CoG it would start above your heels, then it slides under you causing a stand-up motion.

I think just getting your lower spine to have good structure and rotation will do a lot for your consistency.
