THE LINEUP: UNA will pencil in the same five golfers for three straight tournaments, as sophomore Sirichaya Chanpen is once again at the top of the lineup this week. True freshmen Lisa Palmgren and Kiersten Riggins will close their first fall seasons this week, while redshirt junior Kerigan Klauber slots in between them in the third spot after a career-low round of 69 last time out. Junior Ava Schwartz rounds things out.
THE FIELD: The Judson has 11 teams in the field this year, including four Atlantic Sun Conference schools — North Alabama, Austin Peay, Central Arkansas and West Georgia. The Lions are also joined by in-state schools Alabama State and Samford. Others in the field include Lamar, Tulane, Belmont, Division II Mississippi College and host school Southern Miss.
ORDER OF EVENTS: The Lions will depart campus on Saturday morning and will have an opportunity to practice both Saturday afternoon and Sunday. The opening round begins Monday at 8 a.m. and will lead into the second round on the same day. The final round is on Tuesday at 8 a.m. This will be a shotgun start with starting holes TBD.
THE COURSE: One of the top golf courses in the state of Mississippi, Hattiesburg Country Club will host The Judson for a fourth straight season; this is a par 72 course that spans 6,183 yards. The course was redesigned in 1999 by Max Maxwell and Nathan Crace and has hosted U.S.G.A. qualifiers, State Amateur Championships, and State Opens. From 1968 until 1993, HCC hosted the PGA TOUR’s Magnolia Classic, originally held in April during the same week as The Masters, and as a result, some of the biggest names in professional golf walked among the towering pines lining the course’s fairway.
LAST TIME OUT: The Lions placed 12th two weeks ago at the Lady Red Wolves Classic in Arkansas. The Lions finish with a stroke score of 891 — 27-over-par. UNA beat Utah Tech by two strokes and also defeated Murray State, Mississippi College, Southern Illinois and Illinois State. This was UNA’s best stroke score over four seasons at this specific event. Klauber was UNA’s leading golfer with a 45th place finish, including a low-round of three-under 69 to rank tied for the third-lowest round in school history.
JUDSON REWIND: UNA had tremendous success at this event last season, as Klauber earned her first career top 10 finish with a final card of 73-74-74. Her final score of four-over-par 220 was good enough for sole possession of 10th place and led all Lions. She ended the final round with three straight birdies to catapult up the leaderboard. Chanpen will also revisit this course after carding a 10-over-par 226 last season. She was tied for the second-best score on the team.
FAMILIAR FOES: UNA is one of six schools to play in The Judson both last season and this season. Of those six schools, UNA had the second-best finish last season. As one might expect, the only one better was host school Southern Miss. With an even 900 stroke score, UNA beat fifth place Alabama State by 14 strokes. The Lions also beat UAB and returning teams Belmont, Lamar and Mississippi College.
FIRST RANKINGS: Scoreboard Powered by Clipped released the first NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Rankings last week. The Lions are among the top 200 teams with a No. 197 ranking — one spot ahead of ASUN rival Austin Peay. In the individual rankings, Chanpen is UNA’s top golfer with a No. 931 ranking.
