Ben Griffin humorously claimed he deserves a cut of Ryan Gerard’s £540,000 prize after encouraging him to skip the Open and play the Barracuda Championship, where Gerard earned his first PGA Tour win. Gerard, who was second alternate for the Open, was ready to travel to Northern Ireland until Griffin texted him to stay and compete at Tahoe Mountain Club instead. The 25-year-old followed the advice and went on to beat Eric Vanroyan, claiming a life-changing victory. Just 50% of his earnings is all,” Griffin joked, adding that he’s still waiting for the payment. Griffin, a winner at this year’s Charles Schwab challenge, is enjoying a career best season himself. The two friends are set to compete this week at the Windham Championship, where Griffin will no doubt continue to tease Gerard about the timely advice that paid off.
