We’re diving into mindset, purpose, and how she uses the game of golf as a reflection of life itself—patience, precision, and peace. So lock in, Motiv8tors, because this conversation is about elevation, empowerment, and execution. Let’s welcome Khalilah McDuffie to The Hood Motiv8tor Podcast.”

[Applause] What’s going on everybody? Hey, welcome back man. This is your boy the hub motivator. We talking about the soul recharge event. You don’t want to miss this. November 7th, 8 o’clock in 1920 over 400 black professionals. We talked about mental health and I will be keynoting. Yes, your boy the hood motivator will be there keynote and signing autographs and telling you guys I’m proud of you and I love you. Can’t wait to see you soon. Boom. What’s going on everybody? Welcome to the motivators table where we hustle and inspire. And we got a huge guest today. We got a huge guest, the boss of Tampa, Miss Kalia. How you doing? How you doing? Good. I didn’t want to give your bio out because I wanted you to introduce yourself. So, can you tell my audience or your audience who are you and where you from and what do you do? Well, first of all, Queen of the South. Queen of the South. Yes. Uh, second of all, I’m Colleen McDuffy. I was born and raised here in Tampa all my life. Wow. Never left Tampa. I went to college here in Tampa. Did everything here in Tampa. Go Bulls. Um, US. Yes. Okay. I started um our journey, our legacy, our community here in Tampa. So Tampa is my home. So that’s why I call myself Queen of the South. Queen of the South. I love that. I remember when I first got here in 2018, you were definitely uh the queen of the South. you welcomed um me like you knew me forever and the people that I came in the military with when I was retiring and you showed us the ropes and you made it welcoming for me to be here from Tampa. I’m from California. So I appreciate it and you know how you you know I saw your journey from you know entrepreneurship when I was diving into it too and you giving me an opportunity to do what I had to do in my opportunity u entrepreneurship journey too. So yes, we did it together. Our ties go deep. I’ll be here right now and I’m follow I’m doing my gift and this is what you’re doing right now. You’re still inspiring. Yeah. Right. Thanks for inviting me to the table. No, this is this a motivator’s table. So, you know, let’s get right to it. How’s things going right now with you? Um, everything’s going great. So many moving parts, so many moving pieces. As you know, business never stops. You want to continue to grow, you want to continue to flourish. Um, I started my entrepreneur journey. It hasn’t always been so successful. Okay. I had my ups and downs. Um, I started with a barber shop. Yeah. That failed. Okay. Um, I started with then I got a smoke shop that failed. But from there, I was able to still grow from the smoke shop. So, I took that smoke shop and we turned it into a hookah lounge because that’s what people wanted to do. So, I had bought a smoke shop and didn’t know what not one item in that smoke shop was. But I was like, “This is going to be an investment for me. This is going to be my first step into business because I wanted to be a owner. I wanted to be a boss. I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I just never know what that was for me.” Right. Right. I come from child care. I’ve been doing child care for 15 years. Me and my mom. Yeah. Got to the highest point we could get in child care. Um, and it wasn’t fulfilling enough. And I would always tell my mom, I’m going to be my own boss. I’m going to be my own boss. And it got to the point she got frust. What you going to do to be your own boss, Clea? I don’t know. I don’t know. I’m going to find it. So, my first journey on finding my entrepreneurship, failure, failure, and more failure. And then um I don’t know if you heard of OTL hookah lounge I think. What year was it? Otto hookah lounge. Oh my god. Don’t make me tell my age. Was 18 I think. No no no cuz um Seventh and Grow was um 2019. So three years prior to that. So like 2016. Yeah. You was at a bar. I remember when I met you at the smaller bar. Yeah. That’s okay. Yeah. I remember that. Yes. Yes. I saw that. Yes. We had a boom. Yes. I had something that, oh, yay. I’m I’m becoming successful. Everybody’s knowing my name. People are coming. It’s the most I have experienced in business. And that failed. That failed two years later. Wow. Yeah. But it wasn’t a bad fail, right? You know, through that I was able to get closer to God. I was fighting depression. And I was sick of failing. And you know, as we all know, when we going through tribulations and obstacles in life, we get closer to God. And I got closer to God. And one particular day, I went to church and the message was position yourself for God blessing. M and I don’t know about you, once you you’re tired of failing and being kicked down anything and you looking for savior from anything, anyone. I mean, my god, if they said it’s a book for you not to fail in business, I would have read it cuz I was so sick of failing, right? I was so sick of being disappointed. So, I got closer to God. I did um 14-day Daniel’s fast as a church. Okay. Never in my life have I ever experienced a fast, let alone taking everything away for 14 days. Just giving it all to God so God can hear me. And when I tell you those were the best 14 days of my life. Hard but so worth it. And I understood the assignment, right? I understood the assignment finally. Wow. And I was okay with not having a business. I was just excited because I got to a place where I was accepting of I wouldn’t say failure. It was just accepting of whatever God had for me, I’m going to wait for. I’m going to give it to him. He’s going to show me the way. Right. And I like that story because that’s what my my motivators table is all about is they see what’s on the top, but they don’t see the journey that we come from. And they don’t see all the failures that you had to go through and mental health issues and you know betrayals in business and lies and ideas and rumors and all these things that go on in business. All they see is the finished product. Yes. They don’t see you didn’t see me in 2018, 16, 17. You didn’t see me at the bottom doing this. You didn’t see me one or two security guards to blowing up doing this. Not knowing people that I’m taking with me is not happy for me. Right. So they don’t they don’t tell about them stories. No, we don’t. You know, and that’s what I like to tell. It’s like, tell me, how did you make it through your trials and tribulations? Yes. Yes. I hate surface level advice. That’s why I hate going to some of these conventions and summits. I don’t want to hear your success. Tell me your struggle. Start with the struggle for me. Y I could clean up everything else. Give me the struggle. Tell me what bank denied you. Tell me what bank you applied for. Yeah, you know, tell me what management company told you no. Tell me what are they looking for, right? Tell me the truth. You know, y yeah, the building could start off at this much, but your rent, your expenses, your overhead. Come on, talk to me. Yeah. How do you miss payroll? Yes. Like, don’t give me surface level. Yeah, definitely. Give me the truth. Give me the meat. That’s That’s I was telling people. I said when I was going under with my security company, I I never got paid to be the CEO. So all the money that I was getting paid was going back into my company. Recycling, recycling. That’s what people don’t know. Everybody want to be a boss, but hey, the boss don’t always eat. I wasn’t eating. The boss don’t always eat. We got to make sure everybody else get paid. You know what I’m saying? And then people point. So you don’t know what we go through to try to make sure that everybody else out here is getting paid because you’re not reading invoices correctly. All these things. I could do this. I could do this. We’re hiring on potential, but we’re not hiring on hey expertise. And I wanted everybody to do well. I did. I had a genuine heart. You know me. Big heart. Come on, let’s do this. People didn’t want to do the whole corporation. You had a whole building. You had I mean, my God, we did our big one Super Bowl together. Yeah, definitely. You always gave me an opportunity. I appreciate it, you know, but God said that wasn’t for you. So, I learned I learned a lot from that. And now on this journey now as a motivational speaker, podcaster, I’m alone. I got my team, but I don’t have to really worry about anybody else’s KPIs. this my return roses, you know what I’m saying? This is what I’m doing. This is how I’m gonna put my brand out and what I’m going to do. And now I’m successful moving forward and trying to tell people, hey, this is what it looks like. Stop telling about the good days. How did you pivot? Right. Yeah. Did your pivot work? You know, hey, your pivot worked. Look at Look at Yeah. Let’s talk Let’s talk about before we talk about this, I want to give you a gift. It’s my water. Okay. Aqua carbonated. Um, it is um alkaline water. So, it’s not carbonated. No, not carbonated. Okay, good. I can drink it. Yes. Cheers. Yeah. So, you can’t drink my drink. I drink your drink. No, I can drink it. What? What did you do? Did you drink it? Yeah, but we don’t have any ice. I would have drunk it. Yeah. Yeah. You’re a wild boy. I ain’t know. That was in our wild boy. Yeah. Cheers. You can cheers the water. Yes. Yeah. Definitely. Definitely. We didn’t change. Well, let’s talk about this journey that you’re doing right now. Yes. Can you tell um the community about this? Yes. So, outside of Seventh and Grove. Okay. Seventh and Grove became um my sister’s death story, right? Yeah. Um we started Seventh and the Grove in 2019. Me and my business partner, Dr. Glenn. Um I remember um getting a phone call. We me and him went to Super Bowl that year in Atlanta and we were coming back that Monday. I get a call. It was a white woman on the other end phone. Very exciting, very sweet. And she was like, “Hey, you still want this building?” I didn’t know what building, what location she was referring to, where it was at, how big it was, if it was a restaurant, if it was a bowling alley, if it was a flea, if it was even in a plaza. I said, “Absolutely I do.” She’s like, “Great. Just bring me um this amount and you’ll get your keys Friday.” I said, “I sure will. I ain’t got no money. I don’t went through everything, you know, trying to stay afloat, moving things around to stay up top, you know. But when it’s for you, for you, got to make a way.” Yeah. He made a way. I gave her her money on Friday. I got the key and I sent the picture to um my um business partner, Dr. Glenn, and he called me said, “What in the [ __ ] is that? What did you do?” I said, “I got us a business.” And he hung up on me because he was at work cuz he’s a full-time at the time. He’s a full-time pharmacist with Walgreens for several years. Then he hung up on me and I was like, “Yep, I did it. We going to do our big one.” Wow. Yeah. Scary. Yes. Scary. I remember. Scary. And we opened in 2019. And remember 2019 co. So now I’m like I’m about to lose everything again. We were only open seven months. Yeah. This is the first business I ever done at this kind of capacity. Booming too. Yeah. I mean we were doing six figures a week. I fall right there. Yeah. Like wasn’t expecting this. Co hits. Got to let everybody go again. Got to fight this battle again. But this time I wasn’t alone. I had my business partner, Dr. Glenn, with me. And we made it work. I mean, I was in the kitchen by myself. I had a one dishwasher and one cook and that was it. And the money we’ll make will go out. Remember, it was curfews and limitations of what you can and what you can’t do. My one of my line cooks had to take the bus. So, the buses start running by five. So, he’ll have to leave us and we’ll have to stay back and wash dishes. But I must admit though, 2019 was an incredible year cuz our community kept the doors open for us. They wanted us and we did like our first year over two million in sales. Look at that. Yeah. Look at that. And that’s from our community wanting us here. From our community believing in us. Wow. And putting that product back in there. They they love you and we just changed the the face of I I I will personally say of the black restaurants here in Tampa. Oh, you did that. I felt like we paved the way. Yeah. And Eore City before we came back to Eore City, remember they erased anything that was anything culturally hip hopish, blackish. Yeah. All of it. It was just a race, you know, especially on my side of even where I’m at. Remember, nobody came over unless they were going to Columbia. Yeah. Now look. Yeah. All right. Right. We got other black businesses on the strip with us. We have I’m quite sure if we did the statistics, this is probably the century of era of the most black businesses here in Hillsboro County and Still County. Facts. I could I could probably say that we laid that blueprint down for that. Facts. We set the standards for that. You know, and I was always tired of hearing when you tell people, “Oh, you know, I own a black restaurant or I own a restaurant.” The first thing they associate you with a mom and pop styrofoam place. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that, but that’s not my table. That’s not my business. Mine go like this, right? Yeah. Don’t Don’t get it twisted, right? We’re serving you in fine China. Yeah. We’re serving you quality. Yeah. We’re serving you standards. We’re serving you customer service. We have a brand we have built. And from that one brand, we went on to build six other brands. love it in our portfolio. Love it. So, we have Seven the Grove Hospitality Group, right? We have formed and I can honestly loudly and proudly say we’re probably the largest black hospitality group here in Florida, if not number one. I know I’m too I don’t have to say nothing. That’s why that’s why I brought you on. Let them know you see you see all the the glitz and glamour, but you don’t see all the hard work that you had to put in. Oh, absolutely. As a black woman, too. as a black doing it like that in hospitality. Hospitality is all white men, whites, Italians, and Latinos. You held it down. Then there’s black men. Then there’s white women. Then there’s other Then there’s black women. That’s where we’re at when it comes to hospitality. And you held it down. We’re holding it down. Black women all around. All women. Women. This is our season. This is locking down. This is our season. You hear me? This is our season to win. Hey, as I I told you this guest right here was going to show everybody about entrepreneurship talk and how that how she was able to maneuver through business like this and see and pivot and make sure that all her failures was not a failure. There was a lesson in it and you went out and did what you have to do about this. And now I see this popping up right now. Girls at the green. Can you girls on the green? Come on. This is awesome. Tell me about this. I’m finally able to have peace. Okay. and and not be an employee in my business. Okay? And that’s another hard truth people don’t understand. They always associate the owner with not having to be an employee, right? If you’re a owner, you’re going to at some point you’re going to be an employee in your business. Roll that hat. You’re going to have to. Yeah. And I’ve done it for four years and I’ve been open for six years. Yeah. I saw you too. Yes, I saw you do all the positions in in your business. In that building, I saw you. Yeah. And anything and everything in that building that could be done by me or Dr. Glenn. Same thing with my managers. We all could do everything in that building. I like the way you teach them, too. Yeah. We got to cross just like the menu. Yeah. Right. Got to cross utilize. Yes. If it’s not used on that menu twice, take it off. Why are we buying that? Yeah. We need to use that two, three, four, five times. Yeah. To get this product right. Yes. Yeah. I like that. Yes. So, I’m teaching others how to entrep. Like I always say, I never stop teaching. I’m still a teacher. I may not be in the classroom, but I’m still teaching. I’m teaching others. I’m teaching my employees. I’m teaching my managers. I’m teaching. I’m still teaching. And all eyes are still on you and people are watching and you’re leading by example. Yes. Yes. You’re at the forefront still because you are still learning and still grinding. Yes. You know what I’m saying? And that’s why I found this passion with golf. I found a love for golf. Wow. Yeah. I found it. I found my peace. And don’t get me wrong, being an entrepreneur, it’s not always, like you keep saying, it’s not the glitz, not the glamour, it’s not the, you know, the flashy trips. It’s not the flashy meals. It’s not the flashy experiences that matters. It’s your hard work and seeing where it pays off at. Mhm. I found mine being able to step away from my business and let it run itself. Yes. And this is your piece right here. This is my piece, Being on the Green. And you deserve this piece. And this is what inspired you to come up with the name Girls on the Green. It took me months to come up with Girls on the Green. Okay. I I didn’t want to call it black. I didn’t want to call it brown. I didn’t want to, you know, put a color on who could be a part of this, who can join me. Okay? You know, I I did this for all women. Okay? It’s a place for us to come together, network, okay? to grow, to connect. I like that. Learn something different, be a part of something that once again we were not not a part of. Right. Right. Right. And now I’m seeing more and more um girl groups pop up throughout. Um I love the Ladies of Atlanta Golf Club. I love that group. Um City Girls Golf. I love that group. They all out here in Tampa. They’re throughout. They’re um um I’ve seen some in Atlanta. Atlanta has a lot. Miami, DC. Um I even see um Missouri. Okay. Look at Yeah, I see a group out there. Dallas, Houston, and hey, now we got me here in Tampa. Come on. Here we go. You just did an event, too, like a couple of days ago, right? Yes. I did a um event called um Les Party. Okay. Less Party. It’s a play off Golf Word. Okay. Um I went to my first PGA tour, okay? And I tell this story because it was it was so it was like that ah moment. So, I went to the um to the PGA tour at Inisbrook. Never been there either. Okay. Which is blackowned. Okay. Um went there. I seen thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands of people. I’m like, my god, what an incredible, beautiful experience this is. But I’m looking, I’m looking, I’m looking. out of probably about 35,000 people, I will honestly say probably about a thousand of us is black, right? Then you want to do the math on that. Out of that thousand, I probably say probably less than a hundred of us was black women at this whole PGA tour. I’m like, “Wow, this is dope. This is fun, right? Why are we not here? Why are we not invited to things like this? Why do we not know about this? Right. Right. And I’m talking to people. I’m networking. I’m having a good time. Oh, I Oh, I practice here. I play here. I play here. I go here. I practice here. I’m like, oh, that’s what it is. Where do you go? Right. I go network. We need to be on the green networking. Yes. Right there. That’s how you’re able to hear about things, to see about things, and know about things. Right. So, I said, well, hell, I’mma make my own seat at the table, right? and I formed Girls on the Green. I love it. I love it because you inspire, you continue to be innovative. You continue to be inspiring and putting that energy out there like just continue to keep going and this is now is this is able for you to get out there to do something that you love to do. Yes. You know what I’m saying? It’s not hard. Oh, I love it. You wake up happy to do it. Yes. Yes. I look forward to every third I try to golf at least two to three times a week. Like that’s my piece. Okay. Like even on my work calendar, you cannot schedule anything on Thursday for me. Even my manager, I was saying something about an event and I was like, I don’t see it. They said, yeah, cuz your calendar block. I was like, oh yeah, that’s Thursday for real. You’re not going to take that away from me. Yeah. Thursday, it gives me my peace. It’s my mental clarity, you know. Um, people don’t talk about therapy a lot, right? is something that, you know, women, we speak more loudly about it than what men do when it comes to our mental health and therapy. And I was in therapy and I was considering going back. You know, I’m a single mom. I’m doing all this on my own. You know, who’s going to pat me on my back? Who’s going to help me out? Right? You know, and I when I picked up the skill and picked up the club, I I can’t put it down. I cannot. It’s my mental piece. It’s my clarity. Just being out there on the greens. It’s so beautiful. It’s so serene, right? And you go to different courses and different tournaments, you get to see different things, do different things. It’s therapeutic. Yes. Very I love that. Even teeing off at 2:00 in the day in the peak of the sun. So, it’s still so peaceful. I love that. I love it. That’s good. Yes. And that, you know, it’s important that you said that that we take care of our mental health cuz we don’t. And a lot of people don’t know that entrepreneurship is the second hardest thing that you ever can do in life probably. Absolutely. Because if you don’t get your mental right, I said it all the time. I don’t think you should jump into entrepreneurship cuz after me, after I did what I did and went bankrupt with my security company, my mentor took a shot and it connected to everything I’ve been through with my military experience and PTSD and I had to get myself right, you know, and I had to pivot. But it was hard, embarrassing, you know, it was challenging to get back. You know, you lost you lost a lot of people that you thought that had your back, you know, Yeah. So, and it’s so sad when we going through failure, we get to see everything and everybody that wasn’t there for us. That’s not good for us, right? Just to kick you while you’re you’re down more and more and more, right? But the comeback is always worth it. Look at what we doing now. It’s always worth it. And I’m proud of you. Always inspire me. I watch you. I’m like, man, you know what I’m saying? It’s a small world. I said I remember meeting Kalita 2018. The same special pouring into we met a Cadillac dealership one time. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. Back in the day. So way back. So appre you always show me love. So thank you again. You know. Absolutely. Tell me what you got going on in the next year. 2026. 2026. Um there will be some more Seventh and Groves. Okay. Okay. Absolutely. expanding that brand there. Um, Girls in the Green, okay, hopefully in more cities, okay, hopefully in more states, okay, more members here, more women apart here. Um, us partnering with different um leads, you know, growing this, growing the word, growing the brand, growing and promoting more women out on the golf courses doing our business, handling, you know, ourselves. And when we say um girls on the green, it’s just not only golf. We do other things together. We do social outings. We do um wellness and our wellness um clinics and social is yoga. It’s Pilates. It’s meditation. It’s sound baths we do together as a group. Um what else we do? We have our socials. We’ll meet up at different golf courses. And you’re also too when you’re in the group, you’re also always able to train. Wow. with a professional trainer, okay? Like um two of my dearest friends, my friend La Herrell, who um he has a golf charity called I um I golf for vets. Okay. Absolutely amazing. He’s been around for four years and he put it together for um veterans. Okay. He got me into golf. Okay. Yes. And um Reed Delanthony. Okay. Retired um all American NFL just introduced it to me. Introduced this to me and I haven’t walked away from it. I love that for you. Yeah. And it’s just motivating me to be better and do better and do better and do better. I love that. And I’m learning from other girl groups. Like I said, it’s just not about us being on the green. It’s about a community. We’re forming a safe place for entrepreneur women of all color. Okay. From all walks of life to be a part of this. Yes. It’s like our social club. We have tennis. We have raetball. We have pickle ball. Do we’re doing club things. The things we weren’t allowed to do, we’re doing. Yeah. And meeting up with them. Yes. Everything. I love it. I love it. So, it’s a monthly membership. Okay. Um there’s two packages we’re offering. A social package and a diamond um status package. Okay. Your um it still gives you access to your trainings, your socials, your diamond packages, which is a premium or package. Gives you more access into um a wine club that I’m forming with one of our restaurant concepts called Madam Fortune. Okay. So, we’re starting a wine club at Madam Fortune that focuses on womenowned brands. Okay. um fruit brands um blackowned brands, black and brown brands of wines in your wine club. So that’s coming as well and we’re merging that with that. We have a supper club, book club. So these are things we’re doing as a group of women. Yeah. In our community. I love that. So it’s more like a social club. You bringing everybody together. Positivity, too. Yes. I like that, too. And it’s calm and it’s checking in with me, but hey, listen. we could do this fun. But still, I know you guys inspire each other if you need me and talk to me, all that. So, I like that. Yeah. Yes. And at different events, as you know, like you said, I’m all about bringing people to the table. All about always. At different events, we have different vendors, different businesses. Um the last one I just did, I um partnered with Titos. Okay. Um and Boos and Bubbly made the best cocktails. And I’ve been wanting to work with CJ for so long. I watch her grow. Oh, wow. And matter of fact, she started with me too at Seven Grove. Okay. She um she started with like a champagne wall and me and her used to fall out baby over that champagne wall. Broken glasses and everything. Now look at us. And she has built this amazing brand. I’m so proud of her. So this is our first time working together with our first social we did Girls in the Green. Um great job CJ. Keep up the good work, my love. Um, I’m so proud of you. So, yeah. So, I’m partnering with different um other companies. It’s not always about black and brown. It’s about just women able to network and form together. Period. All women. Yes. And I love that, too. And um look in that camera right there and tell the young girls something inspiring that you want to leave them that you would you wouldn’t want wouldn’t wouldn’t want them not to listen to. Take care of your mental. Without that you can not function, you cannot grow. You cannot flourish. Always put your mental first. If it’s gonna break you, walk away from it. If it’s not for you, don’t hesitate to walk away from it. Every opportunity is not for you. And if it’s going to wreck your mental, walk away. I love that. Make sure that you check on your sis and you check on your bro and check on your mentor. Yes. Thank you for tapping in. We love you. I care for you. Are we catching the vision? Now I’m about to activate your gift.
