The golf course was listed for sale in Sept. with a bid of $1.3 million. When no one tried to buy the course, city officials decided to remove the bid and seek proposals for management and operation instead.

“The lease of Maxwell Golf Course did expire on September 30, and in anticipation of that, we did go out in the months of July and August on a bit of a parallel pathway,” Abilene City Manager Emily Crawford said during a city council meeting Oct. 9. “One was to receive requests for proposals for management and operation of the course, and the other was for sealed bids for the sale of the course. We were unsure what the market would be interested in or what opportunities we had for Maxwell in the future so we wanted to make sure that we were allowing both of those options.”

Although the course has been closed since Oct. 1, the city will continue to maintain the property to avoid long-term impacts.
