Starting a Golf Simulator Business: My Road to Profitability

do it right okay you’ll be playing for free after a couple [Music] months hi my name is Dan Diggins I’m the owner of the Bradenton Back N in Bradon Florida I have a golf simulator at home my personal simulator and I uh my wife says why don’t to start a indoor golf facility so I did some checking on the internet and in the back nine seem to have the best business model and I I think it’s a terrific business model because you don’t need employees it’s 247 access which is appealing to people with their different schedules so uh I talked with the people out in St George Utah and after speaking with them I said this is the way to go it’s difficult to open a small business if you have a lot of employees employees really make things a little more complicated and the conept of having a business that appealed to a golfing Community like like Florida like Bradington and having it with no employees and having people come 24/7 at their pleasure and have the way to control the entry into and out of the building uh it just it just seemed like a a wonderful wonderful business concept and uh I said well that’s that’s the way to go I did an online inquiry I think I think Darren called me you know things went really well and the more I learned about the the concept the more I liked it and it really it’s turned out to be everything I thought it would be so I want them to feel like they’re in a premier uh facility I want them to feel like they have the best equipment available out there I want them to feel like they want to join and want to stay a member for a long time and I want them to feel satisfied that they made the right decision to become a member it’s very important to to make sure you treat the customers with the right care that they they deserve and I also want the people to feel like this is this is their own simulator just like if it was in their house because I want them to feel ownership here and feel very comfortable I want them to learn the equipment as well as I know it and I just I just want them to feel like they’re not just a member they’re an owner yeah I’m going to try to uh make sure I get out to the the High School coaches here and offer them and it’s going to be a pretty good discount for the students to come out here and have the coaches bring their team out here to practice um it is Florida and it’s difficult to to play in the heat sometimes and this provides them with a with a venue that uh is probably going to be a little more enjoyable for them there’s also a good Academy here called IMG and they have a golf program and I’ve already reached out to them and offer the facility for them because they use the the public courses because the the practice ice range that they have at IMG is very limited they can’t they can’t even use drivers they have to use irons there so it’s very limited offered to have them come in here and use this facility to get all the all the information about their swing that they can’t get in an open range they would love this facility I just have to get them in here I was hoping after 3 months I’d be able to pay my rent and all my expenses after 6 months I would like to start you know get a little return on investment after a year I’d be thinking about opening a second one there’s nothing like this around here the technology is is state-ofthe-art to me you get instant feedback I mean it’s it’s like you’re outside when you hit the ball you watch the ball here there’s no delay like I said I have a personal simulator at home there’s about a second or two second delay before you see the flight path of the ball that’s not what you should be be offering people to come in here they want the best technology they want to see everything about their swing on the board instantly you also have a camera that looks down on the ball and you can see the club head make impact with the ball and then you also have the ability to record your own swing with the your own phone and you can replay it over and over again you can make the weather whatever it you can make it beautiful you can have a 20 mph headwind you can have a 20 mph Tailwind the technology is is phenomenal and I think it’s it’s going to help everybody swing the serious golf is it’s going to help their their swing it’s going to help their score I think it’s it’s valuable cuz everybody has a different schedule if you just are open you know 9 to 6 every day you know that doesn’t fit a lot of people’s schedule and 247 access at your at your schedule whenever you want you can play golf Unlimited on an hour notice that’s that’s pretty amazing now I don’t know how many people are going to play 3:00 in the morning but it’s available to them should they desire I I think about the First Responders the firefighters uh the police officers the people that have been you know working around the clock for the last 5 weeks because of the Hurricanes here I mean those people need a break and they work shift work so I think you know I think this is would appeal to them the biggest advantage of indoor golf is the time involved you can play 18 holes in less than an hour that’s pretty amazing if you think about it because if you go out to a regular and play outdoor golf it it can here in Florida it can take you 5 hours to play around okay and that doesn’t include the the drive to and from so you’re gone six seven hours of the day well there’s a lot of lot of fathers and mothers that don’t have that time so they could come to to this facility they can play 9:00 at night till 10:00 at night they play the whole round and they get they get their numerics they know how well they they played and they can do it again the next night it’s very valuable if you pay a membership okay you can play as much as you want there’s no there’s no limits you’ll be playing for free after a couple months but we’re going to offer different types of memberships at different prices and yearly monthly things like that so people can uh can make a decision based upon their schedule and their [Music] budget there’s so many golf courses here there’s so many opportunities to play play golf in Florida the weather is good most of the time this is going to bring this to the community so there’s there’s an option when the weather is not perfect and there’s there’s many months where the weather is not very good here because it rains every afternoon every day thunderstorms the courses are saturated I think they’re going to enjoy that oh I I will personally meet each and every one of them when they do make a tea time I’ll make an effort to come down here and and meet with them and see how they’re doing get any recommendations that they may have and you can only do that if if you talk to them personally I I just plan on following up with them and make it kind of like a family
