KINGSTON, N.Y. — The Wiltwyck Golf Club team of Joe Redmond and Mike Hein survived a three-hole playoff to capture the inaugural Green Acres Golf Course Ryder Cup at the Kingston public course on Sunday, Oct. 19.

Redmond and Hein, a former Ulster County executive, tied at 2-over-par through 18 holes in the Ryder Cup-style event with the Wiltwyck team comprised of Mike Beck and Mike Horodyski.

The playoff started at the par-3 seventh hole and tee shots by Hein and Horodyski both narrowly missed hole-in-ones. The winning team birdied the hole to go 1-up in the three-hole alternate-shot playoff. The seventh hole played very difficult in the windy conditions, with a scoring average of 5.4 on the par-3, which included a pair of 10s.

Redmond and Hein closed out the victory with a par on the eighth hole and a conceded birdie on the ninth hole.

The winning team split $1,000, while the runner-up duo split $500.

The Twaalfskill Club team of Paul Larios and Riley Gogg took third place on a match of cards over the Green Acres duo of Brandon and Jake Bonesteel. Larios and Gogg teamed up to win $250.

A total of 36 two-man teams competed in the tournament, which featured three scoring formats. The teams played six holes using the scramble format. Then the remaining 12 holes were played with the teams competing in best-ball and alternate-shot formats, which are featured in the Ryder Cup between the American and European teams every two years.

Green Acres owner Brian Bonesteel was pleased with the turnout in the inaugural event and plans to make it an annual affair. He said the tournament was enhanced by having a quality field and having a new patio and food trailer operational for the players.

“We made a last-minute decision to try a unique format that went so well and was so well-liked that it will now become an annual event,” Bonesteel said. “It’s very exciting for us.”
