welcome to episode number four of the mullet over podcast podcast where we talk all golf all day just one day a week now we we’ve given up on the two day week type situation Valar valpar week is over we are in the Houston open week there’s a lot to go over here I mean Victor havland Justin Thomas everybody was really playing a good game of golf last week yep except for me and me I didn’t do too good either but that’s okay uh we’re not on the PGA tour but these guys are and this is why I mean Victor havland missed three Cuts I think leading up to this three or four Cuts leading up to this tournament I don’t really think anybody had any clue that he was going to do this uh and from his captions and social media posts I think it caught him by surprise too yeah I mean we sat here right and like the whole time a lot of it we’ve talked about Max H and how Max so much struggling Victor hin was not doing much better if even yeah and next thing you know it’s like oh I think last episode I’m pretty sure I said hey bet on Victor hin and not make the cut he shut me up great round from Victor hoblin came through in the clutch JT a minor choke but like JT said he’s like listen man like I’m not even worked up about it it’s important to ride the momentum into the Masters yeah we’re getting really close to the masters of course we saw Xander Schley play this week um he seems like he’s doing pretty decent I think he’s feeling a little bit better headed into uh to the weeks leading up to Augusta here yeah for sure I mean Xander had one of the best performing weeks on approach shots that he’s ever had in his career I mean 11.27 six was the number of Strokes on uh gained on approach shots it’s it it’s basically he’s hitting greens okay just put it this is a simple way to expl Planet he’s hitting a lot of greens and if he’s hitting greens that’s one less problem you have to worry about because if you’re hitting greens and R that means you’re putting for birdie yeah and uh he had a kind of spanic week he was all over the place at the Players a couple weeks ago so really good to see him get this uh get this week seems like he’s getting back into the groove of things after coming back from the uh the injury and of course he’s got tgl happening uh yesterday he played the first round his New York golf club lost to the Atlanta Drive I know you’re you’re an Atlanta supporter as well as I am because our guys are on there and and we can’t talk about this weekend without talking about Billy h horel i mean that dude was one of the craziest up and downs I’ve ever seen uh what was he 130 yards out took a wedge flipped it backwards hit a left-handed shot and then sunk a sunk a nice putt there for par right that approach shot was better than I could hit 130 yard approach shot hit a lefty like we sit there and we’re like oh yeah like we know they’re Pros but like you know a lot of people are like I could I could go out there if I make a few swinging changes dude these people are levels above us right absolute levels it’s not even fair to compare you know these guys are playing from the further back te’s the furthest actually and they sit there and they consistently shoot two three under sometimes four under you’re playing the Sentry 10 under you know what I mean it’s like wow it’s and then you watch him hit a shot Lefty it’s it’s unbelievable and he was one of those guys again at the Players I mean he was quoted as saying I don’t know where the ball’s going I’m just trying to do damage control right like he he didn’t know where the ball was going two weeks ago Xander didn’t look like he knew where the ball was going two weeks ago and then both of these guys come out this week and and post formidable scores in the field that they were in and another another solid week from Jordan SP as well I mean we’re talking about a lot of guys right now he’s another guy to keep your eye on he might be back on the up and up I’m completely here for the Justin Thomas and Jordan spe Revival Justin Thomas is revived yes absolutely so back and I’m gonna make a bold claim here very bold I’m gonna say it Justin Thomas is one step away from clicking and winning maybe three events this year he could have won Genesis he could have won players for sure he could have won this weekend he could have won I feel like there’s one other event that I’m missing point being I think he’s going to click in the Masters I think this is the year JT does it I it’s early we’re two weeks away 16 days 16 days away but something tells me this is the time for JT I don’t I don’t know why I I hope you’re right I love the guy I really do he’s uh seems like a great guy I love the romance that he and spe have going on I love the fact that they were able to play a couple rounds together to being grouped together with your guy like that must be really cool and I know you mentioned the Masters speaking of the Masters today we got one of the worst Masters commercials I have ever seen now you think about the Masters you hear the master theme song playing on the commercials and then you hear Ray Charles’s version Georgia on My Mind exactly but today Noah con went and messed everything up for me and I will never forgive him for that it’s I mean it is abysmal that the I like noon his music’s fine whatever I get that it doesn’t go with the Masters and Augusta theme I just it didn’t it didn’t do it for me I hate changing tradition so I especially golf is the most traditional sport in the world yep so I I I I personally didn’t get it I mean whatever what are you going to do about it it’s just an ad but um it just means we’re that much closer that’s the way I look at it yeah that much closer yeah two weeks away I’m getting very excited the commercials are you know just filling up your ESPN screens everywhere you’re watching March Madness you’re getting a gust of commercials I can’t wait but uh speaking of viewership uh this was a big week for the PGA tour in viewership first off Liv tour viewers are down we’ve known this since they started their broadcasting with Fox uh but NBC Drew 2.1 187 million viewers this week for Victor havins win at the vbar that’s up 16% from Peter milady’s win last year I think people are are more excited about the game of golf obviously I feel like there is more golf drama and more golf news and I think that that’s leading to more people tuning into the broadcast this year I think more than anything it’s having parody I mean last year was any event Scotty chefler put himself in we knew he was winning right Scotty hasn’t won an event this year so I I’m here for the parody like don’t get me wrong it’s nice to watch Scotty go and run it was nice to see tigers run but when you’re sitting there and you know we’re doing a show and we can sit there and be like hey this guy can win this guy can win this guy can win and we all can sit there and say it truthfully and really believe it versus like yeah you know Tony fenale could win this weekend but tiger is going to beat him by five Strokes Scotty Chef by five Strokes it’s so much better and that’s why viewers ship’s up in my opinion yeah and I mean Scotty wasn’t even field this week you got uh two of the top three guys in the world sitting out of this week’s field uh Xander Schley is obviously coming back from injury so he’s not the same guy that he was last year when he won all those major championships but uh it’s just it’s it’s more fun to tune into a golf tournament not knowing who’s going to win per se you know what I mean I mean last year you said it Scotty won dare I say too much I don’t think he won too much but I mean he won nearly every delis event on the tour last year that you know wasn’t in England or whatever but um people just want to watch competitive golf they want to they want to see the good stuff they want to see Victor havin and Justin Thomas going down to the last two holes you know they want to see all this stuff so uh a funny thing that happened at the uh the V bar was Adam hadwin and I think that we can both probably relate to this in our own right because I’ve definitely wanted to smash a sprinkler or two but I don’t think he expected the uh the result quite like it was I hear rumors that that sprinkler is still running to this day but he took his Club he just I mean it was probably his best hit of the weekend if I’m being honest I love Adam hadwin you know he saw him on full swing but he really did a number on that sprinkler I mean he he it exploded it was funny it was it was kind of like uh in between that like the amount of Club drops Club throws we saw this weekend sa he G doing it it was like hey these guys are human too I mean granted Pat kazy put puted his punted his putter that was a good one yeah versus us you know doing that because we’re 18 whatever over 20 over 14 over 10 over these guys are doing that one a two under but yeah I mean it was a it was a frustrating weekend for a lot of guys and as we said on last week’s show the snake pit it was very difficult these guys did not finish with uh the highest scores that we’ve ever seen and I and we we’ both said that we like that so it’s it’s good competitive fun golf the viewership shows it uh but our picks once again the hardest sport to predict is golf absolutely without a doubt um they weren’t that great picked Michael Kim I don’t think he made the cut yeah he I don’t think he did I picked Fleetwood Fleetwood finished t16 and that was the most Tommy Fleetwood round ever just hanging around hanging around not out of it not not really in it but still hanging around where he could possibly be in it it’s that fourth gear is missing for Tommy and you know I like Tommy Fleetwood I think he’s a great ball Striker but he just can’t get it done forever reason yeah well I saw after we recorded the show last week I think you sent it to me it was like an hour after recorded that uh Tommy Fleetwood is the highest earning guy on tour to never win he just surpassed he made yeah he’s made over 25 million yeah he just surpassed $25 million without a victory on the PGA tour which in its own right is kind of impressive but I mean he’s always seemingly hanging around there he’s always like he always makes a cut never misses a cut and uh just he just doesn’t have what it takes to win at this point in time which is quite unfortunate but we’re going to shift our Focus away from last week’s tournament and now we’re going to talk about what is coming up this week so last week we didn’t have two of the top three guys in there this week they’re in there Scotty and Rory both in the Houston open now you got to think Scotty Sheffer in his home state of Texas probably going to try and put on a show for these guys out here right 100% And like guys this is the final war up for the Masters all these people are in the field they’re going to play this week they probably won’t play in the I believe it’s the Valero Texas open yep uh they’re probably not going to play in that but this is like hey they’re going to do this tuneup fly to Augusta get everything in shape for that and this is like they got to put it into gear we’re hitting we’re hitting uh the champion Big Time championships yeah well you mentioned flying to a austa apparently allegedly Rory melroy did that today and now he’s flying back out to Houston to go uh to go check out that course out there but he was scouting Out Augusta today I saw on Twitter and uh he’s in the field this week obviously coming off of that win at the Players he is making his first appearance in the Houston open since 2014 so is he going to continue to ride that hot hand headed into this uh Texas Swing here I mean he’s Roy marroy he’s going to be in the mix yeah that’s that’s just the truth I mean and also he’s he’s really looking for another major championship he hasn’t had one in a decade he he wants to get tuned up for the Masters obviously the players the fifth major he won that so he can put under pressure that stigma has been broken and then we have Stephan Jagger who is the defending champion of the Houston open so uh he’s been hanging around a little bit this year I I’ve heard his name on a couple of broadcasts but you know I don’t really know much about the guy but obviously won this event last year I think he could definitely be poised to be put in a position to succeed this this week yeah I mean jger bal’s legit and he’s had a not only did he win last year at the Houston open he was I believe T3 at the Farmers Insurance last year and I think he was in the mix again at the Farmers Insurance this year so I mean the guy the guy he’s his name’s always up there yeah he’s uh kind of like a less notable Tommy fleetw for some that would say that I mean he’s got a w Tommy Fleetwood doesn’t that’s also very true that could be a more notable Tommy Fleetwood other guys in the field we’re going to see wendam Clark this week uh hadn’t seen him since the players since he withdrew from the was it the second or the third round so could be interested to see what second round yeah he only got through like 32 holes or something um could be interesting to see what wam Clark has uh has in in the bag headed into the Masters I mean he won the 23 US Open so get tuned up and try and go out and win another major I don’t see I mean he he’s played well all season to another guy that you know you just see his name at the top of the leaderboards when you turn on the Saturday and Sunday broadcast I think that he has what it takes and maybe even Tony fow unless the Tony fow syndrome kicks in I don’t know you like that you like that I do I do I think it uh I think it encapsulates you know a guy that’s always up there and then just can’t do it on the last day so he’s he’s won the Houston he’s won the he’s won the Houston open as well so we’ll see what happens with him yeah Jason day what do you I I know you like Jason day did you happen to see him play with Wesley Bryan over the weekend I have not turned that on yet I saw it on that’s a good one you will enjoy that one and Jason day he’s won in the past two seasons X world number one won a major before and it’s the best way to say this he’s in the Twilight of his career it feels like and he’s kind of more focused on other things than it feels like professional events but he plays in every event pretty much yeah so it’s hard to get engaged he’s doing stuff on YouTube now he started his own YouTube channel with his buddies I would just I would love to milk one more major out of Jason day I me you know he has it in him he absolutely is is still more than capable I mean he was hanging around what is it the Genesis or was it the farmers one of the ones at Tory he was hanging around at um not make the cut the Genesis okay so must have been Farmers must have been the farmers and then of course obviously he didn’t play in The Players uh but you know we’ll see what the the week has in store for Jason day Ricky Fowler also in the field this week he’s also playing in uh the tgl this week so he’s had some decent shots nothing nearly as good as my guy Patrick hlay did last night but you know every time andless I tweeted it out yesterday every time I hear Ricky Fowler’s name get called I think about the one clip of the guy mispronouncing his name on the tea box where he says now teeing off Ricky flower I just always remember that and I don’t really know why but Ricky Fowler he’s back in there he played well last week um his or uh at the Players not last week he played well at the Players oh no he didn’t he he played awfully at the Players did he play last week no he didn’t play last week I don’t think he hasn’t played well in a long time he was up there in one of the events this year I can’t remember which one it was but I saw him was it Pebble Beach it might have been feel like it wasn’t that long ago but I I could be completely wrong I’m going to be honest with the the viewers I didn’t watch much golf this weekend I was all in a March Madness mode so I think we all were somewhat yeah that’s the problem with these events but um when March Madness cools down the Masters picks up right yeah I I personally think it’s the best uh month for sports the end of March beginning of April yeah so Ricky’s looking to make a push to try to qualify for Georgia Augusta right his name’s not guaranteed in there um I think a couple other people like that I think uh I’m pretty sure as well that uh like minw Le is not guaranteed to get in a couple other names so they’re trying to make it happen and um I mean I don’t expect a lot from Ricky at this point in his career it’s it’s I honest honestly I have no clue how he even played on the Ryder Cup team two years ago I know he won an event that year but it was one of the that the fortn Net’s not that good of an event I mean maxom most people if you look at the history of the fortnet winners there’s a lot of back-to-back winners Max H was a back-to-back winner and there’s someone else who won recently backtack but besides the point Rick’s looking him qualify for the Masters that’s honestly his main motive this weekend now some other big names in the mix sayala is in the mix of course he’s kind of playing every single event trying to ride it out in as much effect as he can and uh Maverick McNeely returns for the first time since his heartbreaking loss of the Genesis yeah that’ll be interesting to see I know when that happened I remember that you texted me and you said that this guy is going to be on the Ryder Cup team this year so he’s trying to prove his point he’s trying to prove the fact that he needs to be on that team and I don’t know sneaky favorite Maverick mcney dare I say I don’t think when when Rory maroy and Scotty Sheffer are playing in an event there is no sneaky favorites that’s also true they’re they’re top one and two in the betting favorites right now too so yeah I mean plus I believe it’s between plus 300 to plus 450 for Scotty Sheffer to win I mean we’re talking about an event that has a field of 120 players players and this guy is plus 300 like what unbelievable and I would say that you would never guess who number three is but you’re the one who put these notes together so you obviously know who number three is but Aaron Ry is a name that I would not expect to be number three in any golf competition uh let alone one with Scotty Sheffer Rory mroy Jason day sun JM you know guys like that yeah I mean Aaron rise he’s gave himself some notability recently so I can’t say I’m too surprised but is he a better golfer right now than Jason day is he a better golfer right now than scy go yeah maybe not Maverick mcney it’s hard to tell Maverick mcne hasn’t hit played an event teed it up in a month a month and two weeks yeah something like that so I’m not I’m not surprised but I don’t know man it’ll be interesting this weekend I mean most most people this is fine-tuning right yeah this is just adding to that it’s keep yourself competitive keep yourself playing what who who are you taking if you we got to pick one I know we suck at this but you got to pick one person yeah it’s always tough I mean you go into these events but I think Scotty goes home to Texas and and you know call me out in the comments for for picking the uh the the favorite but Scotty goes home to Texas he’s getting ready to go he’s getting kicked into that that fourth gear that Tommy Fleetwood doesn’t have and he’s going to walk away with a victory this week I think all right I’m I’m still on my anti- Scotty winning train okay that’s fair I mean he hasn’t he hasn’t shown his true colors this year I don’t think so I’m gonna I’m going to give you a little parody here just because we got to mix it up right okay you can’t just say the same things over and over again give me death ray pointed at the Earth aliens are going to get us I want [Laughter] SAA that was pretty close to Iguodala it was very close to Iguodala yeah literally almost rhymes with Iguodala yeah that’s a yeah I mean Club throw last week really going to get him fired up he’s going to go off this week in Houston I could totally see it happening I mean he’s been struggling this year he has been he has been but when he struggled the most last year he rebounded and he he he won the um what was it did he win the BMW last year no I’m pretty sure last year you’re thinking of the Tour Championship he didn’t win Scotty won that oh yes but he played very well in the uh in the down stretch of the year last year gave himself that controversial two-stroke penalty yes he did I do remember that now that you mention it probably cost which probably costed him winning that event it very well could have been yeah so a couple other names that I want to talk about this week that are in there JJ spawn okay he is probably the second most talked about guy in golf the last two weeks over Rory mroy just considering his absolute meltdown in the playoff at uh Saw Grass um and then we also have Michael Kim back in the field Sun JM I touched on and Davis Thompson Davis Thompson is actually the fourth best odds to win uh behind Scotty Rory and Aaron Ry uh tied with JJ spawn with fourth best odds to win uh plus 3250 for those guys uh Jason day Michael Kim Sun JM and Tony fenal each plus 3500 and Stephen Stephan Jagger uh 45 plus 4500 to repeat this week so I know you say it’s a fining fine-tuning event but $9.5 million purse 500 FedEx Cup points this is a solid event to get your feet wet on the tour if you’re a young guy and uh you want to make your name known up at the top of the FedEx Cup standings um especially this week headed into Augusta the next couple weeks you know this could be a an event where if a guy who’s near the top wins they’re going to stay up there and and really push that case toward the end of the season I’m going to touch on JJ spawn real quick okay you think he’s going to come into this event rattled or you think the week off was enough I mean I could totally see the week off enough but when you go back to thinking about the coverage and what Kevin kizner said about how he gets in his head so much I I think that he’ll be rattled I think that you know you said that morawa was going to be off players week and he seemed to play fine I think that spawn will not do good at all I and then you know when he does great I’ll come back and next week show will say that I was super wrong but I I don’t think JJ spawn will play good I think he will be rattled this week if you’re a professional golfer you want us to say You’re going to miss the cut it’s you’re going to make the cut the way things are going with our predictions yeah absolutely yeah I don’t I think it was a little different because morawa kind of I I said it in a way because I thought he was cowering away but he may have saved himself less mental damage that spawn took cuz spawn was on a tie raade right oh I played that ball perfectly I did everything I was supposed to do I mean I have mixed feelings about that myself like don’t get me wrong like it was very windy it was 130 to the pin and it was probably like 1 what 139 over the back yep by no means am I a professional golfer but I’m hit my eight iron 160 you know where my eight Iron’s going if I hit it in the T box there in the water too long so for me to hit it long what does that say about a guy who’s a professional golfer they’re going to hit it long right so I think he should have just accepted hey I made the wrong call and moved on versus really fighting it and you know I I don’t know yeah I think span and marawa handled their uh losses differently I think that morawa was obviously frustrated in the moment but then he was he was very quick to get over it and move on and then spawn he’s kind of harping on it and making you know his excuses or whatever um but week off in between his difference here is he going to be able to mentally regroup in that week off or is he going to continue and just not play great so we’ll see what happens that’s the thing about golf is it’s so totally unknown and so totally hard to predict 100% it’s tough It’s the toughest sport for sure toughest mental sport Absolutely I’ll tell you one thing though uh I I don’t I don’t play particularly well but I am particularly proud of how I played with my wedges this past weekend I didn’t keep scoring I was playing loose and I was just flopping all over the place it really was it was it was great I had the 60° in hand and you know it’s just something about playing confident golf if you’re playing good one aspect of your game is good then you play more confident and then you start to see other parts of your game warm up so maybe something like that will happen with uh Mr JJ spawn over the weekend but who knows that’s I think what we should really say after every prediction we make on this channel it’s it’s should be a safety blanket for us right yeah right who knows who knows I don’t know that’s for sure don’t listen to me come here for the
